The New Hampshire Humanities Council invites you to join your neighbors for a six-part community conversation in Berlin to discuss the shifting role of religion in the public square. Goal of the "Shifting Ground" project is to get beyond the headlines, to reflect, learn and cultivate an understanding of how religious belief and practice affect American life. Advance readings will help prepare us, and facilitators will guide the conversations. The Berlin forums will gather at the NH Community College on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30pm beginning on September 27. Cost for the reading materials is $10 per person. Registration closes this Friday, September 21. Contact the Humanities Council at 224-4071 for additional information or read about the program at www.nhhc.org.

The Assistant Director will work with the Executive Director to develop, coordinate, manage and evaluate Arts Alliance systems and activities, including events, member services, cultural programs and special projects. We're proud to once again be a coordinating partner for the NH State Council on the Arts' annual Arts in Education conference, Beyond Adequate: Transforming Our Educational Landscape through the Arts Friday, October 5 through Sunday, October 7, at the Sargent Center for Outdoor Education in Hancock, NH. The conference -- for artists, educators, parents and school leaders -- features outstanding guest speakers, hands-on workshops, networking opportunities and a wide array of programs devoted to professional development and renewal. Come to the conference to learn how to use the arts to celebrate the powerful voice of every child; connect the arts and academics; adopt a culture-based approach to teaching and learning; and explore the relationship between the arts and the environment. The Arts Alliance has scholarship funds for North Country artists interested in attending. Visit our website or contact us at [email protected] for registration information and additional details.

At the end of the month we'll be launching a new interactive "Connections & Opportunities" site where North Country organizations and artists can learn about – and post – jobs, professional development opportunities (workshops, conferences, classes, meetings), grant and funding announcements, exhibit and performance opportunities, "classified" listings related to arts and culture, news briefs, and other items of interest. Please send us your postings (indicating category, title, date, place, phone number, email or web address, and a brief description) to [email protected].

The White Mountain School kicks off its annual Cultural Events Series Thursday, September 27, at 7pm with a lively musical and theatrical performance by the Chinese group The EastRiver Ensemble. Based in Chinatown, New York City, the group combines a musical performance of classic Chinese instruments such as lutes, operatic fiddles and dulcimers with a narrative that helps western audiences understand the history and context of Chinese folk arts. The second half of the program will be a presentation of the music and meaning behind acrobatic jingju (Beijing opera), and will culminate in an enactment of an exemplary martial scene. The performance takes place in the Great Hall of the White Mountain School. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and may be purchased at the door. For more information, please contact Rebecca Beno at 444-2928. As part of our block-booking program, the Arts Alliance invites interested schools to call us about presenting the Ensemble before or after the public performance.

On Thursday, October 4 from 6 to 7:30 pm at Heritage Commons, Plymouth State University, Bob Cottrell will lead us along the routes into the White Mountains used by hundreds of artists over the past two centuries -- including Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt and Samuel Lancaster Gerry. The free program, presented by the PSU Center for Rural Partnerships in collaboration with the Arts Alliance as part of our North Country Visual Arts project, will look at the history and nature behind the art, the geological formations that attracted the artists (waterfalls, flora and fauna), the tools and techniques they used in their paintings, drawings and prints, the history they captured in their work (such as farm and village life, fences, bridges and livestock). Bob Cottrell has been the Executive Director at the Remick Country Doctor Museum and Farm in Tamworth, NH, since 1996. He has a master's degree from the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture in Delaware and has worked in the museum field since 1982.
