Art Education Opportunities

Teaching artists are invited to Cultivating the Field, a special institute for artist educators August 22-24 at Lesley University, Cambridge, MA. The institute is offered through a partnership between Lesley's Creative Arts in Learning Division and NECAP, the New England Consortium of Artist-Educator Professionals, for which the Arts Alliance serves as coordinating partner.

Come get a student's-eye look at the critical components of a successful residency. Engage in hands-on, experiential workshops. Get re-inspired as an artist. Offerings include "Curriculum Planning Demystified," "Unlocking the Multiple Intelligences through Theater," and "Curriculum in Motion." Institute fee is $175. Save the Date! 2007 New Hampshire State Council on the Arts' Arts in Education Conference, October 5-7. This year's conference – which brings together artists, parents, teachers and advocates – focuses on "Moving Beyond Adequate: Transforming the Educational Landscape through the Arts." Highlights include: a keynote presentation by Dr. Plato Karafelis, recipient of the National Educator Award from the Milken Foundation; conference Artist-in-Residence Jody Diamond, composer, performer and cross-cultural educator; a colloquium on Educational Leadership for principals, parents and school leaders; arts-integrated and interdisciplinary workshops; Eco-Arts exhibits; and a variety of resources and networking opportunities. Our e-bulletins cover two weeks at a time during the summer and fall seasons. The submission deadlines for upcoming bulletins are July 12 and 26, and August 9 and 23.

Jay Craven's "Disappearances" Plays Lincoln & Plymouth July 7 & 8: Director Jay Craven's "Disappearances," a "Vermont frontier film" based on the award-winning novel by Howard Frank Mosher, will be shown at 7:30pm on Saturday, July 7 at Lincoln Village Shops and 7:30pm on Sunday, July 8 at the Plymouth Senior Center as part of a New Hampshire Fifty-Town summer tour. Tickets are $9, $8 for seniors and students. "Disappearances" stars Kris Kristofferson. The Fifty-Town Tour is supported by NH Public Radio and the Arts Alliance. The Lincoln showing is co-sponsored by the North Country Center for the Arts and the Papermill Theater.

The Blake Mountain Band presents an outdoor concert Sunday, July 8 at 1pm at the Poore Family Homestead on Route 145 (7 miles north of Colebrook, 7 miles south of Pittsburg). The 5-member acoustic band from Thornton plays a wide variety of music, including Bluegrass, Old-Time Country, French Canadian fiddle tunes, Gospel and even a little Cajun. Suggested donation is $8 per adult; children under 12 are admitted free. Bring a chair or a blanket. The concert is part of "Mountain Links: NH Music Traditions," presented by members of the Arts Alliance throughout the region and supported in part by a grant from the NH State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. IMAI's "Northward Bound" Chamber Music Series begins July 10 in Lancaster. Musicians from the International Musical Arts Institute in Fryeburg, Maine bring three concerts of classical chamber music to communities in Coos County as part of this ongoing series partnership with the Arts Alliance and local presenters. At 7pm on July 10, they play music of Mozart, Turina and Beethoven at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 113 Main Street, Lancaster. Arts, Culture, Heritage & Humanities Grant Proposal Basics: A Workshop Series takes place 3 to 5pm, July 12, August 9 and September 20 at the Rocks Estate, Bethlehem. Learn to plan, write, improve and submit grant proposals in this series presented by the Arts Alliance and North Country Council. Session 1, on July 12, offers an overview of the basics of grant proposal research. Session 2, August 9, includes a conversation with funders from the NH State Council on the Arts and the NH Humanities Council, and September 20 focuses on a sharing session to which participants will bring copies of a draft proposal that will be critiqued so that it can be ready for October grant deadlines. Patrick Ross Plays Fiddle Music at John Wingate Weeks Historic Site 7pm Thursday, July 19. Ross performs a mix of tunes handed down through five generations of his French Canadian and Scottish family in a free concert in the Summit Lodge Great Room as part of the 2007 Summer Program series. The concert is sponsored by the Weeks State Park Association in partnership with the Arts Alliance's "Mountain Links: NH Music Traditions" program. Call for Art for "Now/ Then / When" Exhibit: Current and former Berlin-area residents are invited to submit work. The Arts Alliance, Tri-County CAP and the Northern Forest Heritage Park announce an open call for art for "Now / Then / When," a juried exhibit that will run at the Heritage Park from August 24 through September 8. The exhibit will feature artwork that relates to Berlin's connection to the paper industry and works that deal with the current state of change in the city. All media is welcomed and new media, conceptual, or non-traditional work is encouraged. Rachelle Beaudoin, mixed media artist and former Berlin resident, will curate the exhibition. 5th Annual Stratford Jam Benefit with Live Bands

The Connecticut River Artist Group is sponsring a Summer Plein Air Paintout and Art in the Park Exhibition July 26-29. Artists from throughout NH, VT, ME, MA and Quebec are invited to participate, collaborate with fellow artists and paint "en plein air" at beautiful locations throughout the Connecticut Lakes Region and the northern Connecticut River Valley. Historian Jeffrey Smith, portraying Andrew Carnegie, appears at the C.D. McIntyre Auditorium, 16 Highland Street. In his lifetime, Carnegie funded 1679 public libraries; in New Hampshire, he funded libraries in Berlin, Claremont, Dover, Franklin, Lebanon, Littleton, Raymond, Rochester and Whitefield. Dr. Smith is a history professor at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. The Whitefield Public Library will host an open house, preceding the presentation, from 6-6:45pm.

Friends of the Randolph Library sponsors an evening of music at the Church of Latter Day Saints, Route 2, Randolph. Photo Competition: Alumni Hall and the Lower Cohase Chamber of Commerce announce their 2007 region-wide photography competition, and invite all photographers to participate. With its theme "As You've Never Seen It Before," the contest seeks photography that portrays people, places or things from the Lower Cohase/Upper Valley region in a truly unique way. Photo-subjects must be from the towns of Haverhill or Piermont, NH, Bradford or Newbury, VT, or any town directly abutting any of those four. Photographers may be from anywhere.
