July  2011

Greetings!

Mid-summer and the Fourth of July! It's the perfect time to cross the Channel and enjoy the many adventures that wait for you on our beautiful Island-or, just relax!

This month's photo gallery is a real thriller. Our Education Manager Frank Hein had the opportunity to take his camera along with the crew from the Institute for Wildlife Studies as they banded the bald eagles that hatched this spring. Sit tight, because you'll have a nest-side view of the action!

Also, be sure to add July 8 to your summer calendar. The G2 Gallery in Venice Beach is hosting an artist reception with nature photographers Jack Baldelli, Carlos de la Rosa, and Marc Muench. Read more below.

BANDING CATALINA'S BALD EAGLES

Island's newest residents tagged for research

It's been another productive breeding season for bald eagles, and as with any year, the Institute for WBald eagle talonsildlife Studies (IWS) has been hard at work making sure these iconic birds are thriving on Catalina Island.

The Conservancy has a long history of supporting IWS by providing funding in its early years, land for it's eagle enclosure, full access to Catalina's wildlands and logistical support. This year the Conservancy had an opportunity to provide extra help. I was honored to be able to go with them on two nest climbs. Special thanks to Dr. Peter Sharpe, Steffani Jijon and the IWS crew for their excellent work. To join us in the field, click here.

This spring, Conservancy Volunteer Ranger Jack Baldelli contacted Plant Ecologist Sarah Ratay after seeing a showy, colorful orchid in a remote canyon on the south side of the Island. Ratay was immediately curious as there are only two known orchid species on the Island, both with small, green, inconspicuous flowers. More...

CONSERVANCY EXPERTS ATTEND SYMPOSIUM
Two promote island research in Hawaii
Dr. John Clark

Dr. John Clark

When it comes to plants, islands the world over face similar issues such as species and habitat loss and the looming threat of invasive species. In late May, a four-day Pacific Biogeography Symposium in Honolulu, Hawaii, focused on these concerns by looking at research in the fields of ecology, evolution and conservation biology.
Cliff Hague

Cliff Hague

Dr. John Clark and Cliff Hague, both with the Conservancy, attended the conference. Clark is the Conservancy's new Senior Plant Biologist and Curator of the Conservancy's Herbarium and is a specialist in island biogeography-the study of how and why species colonize, survive, and prosper on islands. Clark, Ph.D. in botany, presented his research on the origin and diversification of species in the Pacific as well as research opportunities on Catalina Island. He also led and moderated one of the sessions. Hague, the incoming Chair of the Conservancy Board, is also a biologist with a degree in zoology from UC Davis, and for the past 12 years has focused on the area of sustainable conservation practices. Director, Airport in the Sky

Jorge O'Leary takes a break from speaking to a visitor and picks up his handset to acknowledge an incoming private aircraft, banking to the right, preparing to land on the 3,000-foot-long runway at Catalina Island's Airport in the Sky.

O'Leary has been on the job for about a week as Director of Airport Operations with the Catalina Island Conservancy, owners of the airport that occupies a 1,602-foot-tall mountaintop at the center of the Island, 10 miles from the city of Avalon. Just a few weeks earlier, O'Leary was managing the Show Low Regional Airport in Show Low, Arizona, a Part 139 Certificated Commercial Service Airport. More (PDF)...
