Greetings!
As summer approaches on Catalina, we have two special events that may appeal to your artistic side.
On Saturday, June 11, the Catalina Island Conservancy welcomes nine world-renowned plein air painters to the Catalina Country Club for Catalina: The Wild Side Art Show and Sale. Don't miss this wonderful afternoon of art and the opportunity to purchase your own special piece of Catalina. You can even join us for a special Artists Preview Dinner the night before.
Later in June, you can visit Catalina in Venice Beach during Catalina: The Wildlands at Your Doorstep, a photography exhibit at G2 Gallery. This is your opportunity to view and purchase the works of nature photographers Carlos de la Rosa, Marc Muench and Jack Baldelli.
You can read more about both June events in this newsletter.

EXPLORE THE WRIGLEY MEMORIAL & BOTANIC GARDEN
Discover some of Catalina's unforgettable beauty
Text by Tricia Bennett
Photos by Frank Hein and Jack Baldelli
In 1935, Ada Wrigley began planting exotic desert plants on Catalina. The temperate climate made it possible to showcase plants from all over the world. The Garden languished during World War II, but was restored and expanded starting in 1970.
In addition to the cactus garden that features more than 500 exotic species of cacti and succulents, there is a native plant collection with 100 or so endemic and native plants of California's Channel Islands.
Today, the Garden is an exciting place to visit, where you can see eight Catalina endemic plant species on display. You can wander the paths, taking in the vibrant colors and interesting textures of the cactus garden and native plant collection.

ADA WRIGLEY'S HIDDEN GARDEN
One man brought Catalina treasure back to life
By Bob Rhein
Mark Hoefs stood alone with a shovel in one hand and a pick in the other. He was on a narrow, dirt path in the middle of what is now the Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden. This was not the well-maintained, well-marked Garden of the present. This was 1970.
Thirty-five years earlier, Ada Wrigley had entombed her late husband, William Wrigley Jr., in the imposing mausoleum she had built at the head of Avalon Canyon. While the mausoleum, 180 feet tall and 232 feet wide, honored the family patriarch, Mrs. Wrigley added a touch of her own. A lover of exotic cacti, she hired renowned Pasadena horticulturalist Albert Conrad to add a magnificent Desert Plant Collection consisting of cacti, succulents and other desert plants from all over the world.

SEE CATALINA ISLAND BY LAND AND SEA
Conservancy partners with Afishinado Charters
The Catalina Island Conservancy is pleased to offer a new tour: the four-hour Land and Sea Tour. This is your chance to experience Catalina's wildlands during a Jeep® Eco-Tour and see the Island's beautiful coast aboard the Afishinado, the flagship vessel of Afishinado Charters.
Each portion of the tour takes two hours. For land, a driver and Conservancy-trained naturalist guide will take you through Catalina's wildlands, where you can see bison, the Catalina fox and archaeological sites. After boarding the Afishinado, you'll see the channel side of the Island along with some of Catalina's amazing marine life.
The eco tours, which begin and end in Avalon, include time to eat or explore the quaint village of Two Harbors. They are available in the morning and afternoon with each leg of the tour accommodating six guests. Custom versions of this tour can be arranged for larger groups. To book a Land and Sea Tour, call (310) 510-2595, Ext. 0.

CATALINA: THE WILD SIDE ART SHOW AND SALE
At the Catalina Country Club
On Saturday, June 11, nine nationally acclaimed plein air artists will display their interpretations of Catalina's rugged wildlands as well as Avalon and Two Harbors at the Catalina Country Club. Proceeds from the sale of these unique paintings will help to establish a permanent collection of plein air artwork that documents the Island's "wild side" and the Conservancy's restoration efforts. Click here for ticket information and event details.
The night before the show, the Conservancy will host a special Artists Preview Dinner at Castillo del Mar, the spectacular home of Blanny Avalon Hagenah, a great-granddaughter of William Wrigley Jr. Our featured plein air artists will join us to discuss and preview select paintings that will be available at this year's show.
In previous months, we have introduced you to eight of the featured plein air artists, and this month you'll meet the last one.
