Five Common Issues with Church Sound
- Not enough people in the congregation are familiar with the sound system, putting all the pressure on one or two hard working individuals that over time can get burned out or turn-sour towards helping at additional non-service events.
- Audio engineers weren't formally trained, and thus aren't familiar with many intermediate-to-advanced features of the sound equipment - limiting what they can do to improve the overall sound mix.
- Musicians are uncomfortable playing up front due to inconsistent sound, frustrating monitor mixes, and the odd feedback loop that embarrasses everyone involved.
- The sound engineer booth is set off to the corner due to limited room or perhaps aesthetic reasons - which limits his or her ability to hear what the rest of the congregation hears.
- The pastor's voice can sometimes seem hollow or thin due to simple EQ issues that could take seconds to resolve with some minor adjustments.

Greetings to you and yours!
|
March is here and in this newsletter I want to focus on video production. Particularly for ministries. I'm highlighting an interview I did with Zeornee" Herts, Media Director of St. Mark Baptist Church of Little Rock, Arkansas where Bishop Steven Arnold is Pastor.
Plus, off to the left be sure to check out a few of our newest websites, particularly the one we just finished for St. Mark. Whew! What a project. The goal was to create a site that is very interactive and that can easily be updated.
The next phase will also include streaming video and downloadble mp3s and video files for digital media players. Watch out for that update in a few weeks.
In the mean time enjoy my interview with Zeornee and since good sound, audio and video goes hand in hand, enjoy this information from my colleagues in Canada who have the site www.churchsoundsecrets.com
Expect Success!

P.S. Oh yes, I almost forgot. Be sure to tune in to 5-Fold Fridays every Friday in March and April at 10pm CST, as I present " How to Launch and Maintain a Ministry or Non-Profit in this 21st century." It's being done "teleseminar style" and the last week will feature questions from folks just like you. Be sure to check out the first part of the series which aired last Friday.

| SPOTLIGHT ON LITTLE ROCK ARKANSAS' ST. MARK BAPTIST CHURCH MEDIA MINISTRY |
|

Enjoy this enlightening interview with Zeornee: Herts, Media Director of St, Mark Baptist Church, Little Rock Arkansas.
DHO: In your role, what kind of things are you responsible for?
ZH: I am responsible for the Audio Recording, Video, and Sound Reinforcement ministries as well as the newsletter, website, print advertising materials and now marketing of the church. I produce a weekly television broadcast which airs on two statewide network affiliates as well as The Word Network. This year we also added a radio broadcast on one of our local R&B/Hip-Hop Stations. I am also responsible for the recommendation of media equipment purchases and maintenance and the management and training of 45 volunteers and 7 part-time staff.
DHO: What do you think has been your biggest challenge in this position? ZH: The biggest challenge for me has been time-management based on the projects that our ministry carries out. Our pastor, Bishop Steven M. Arnold, is a humble man and a great visionary and with that comes a multitude of outreach ministries as well as the spiritual development of our members. To whom much is given, much is required. We at St. Mark have been blessed with a membership that exceeds 6,500 and is comprised of 60% women and 40% men. Not only are we striving to reach our members internally with activities each day of the week, but we also minister to the community through outreach projects that reach the homeless, the imprisoned and those overseas. I am responsible for providing the promotional support to more than 50 ministry units and the media support needed for the countless functions we host weekly. Even with all that I have on my plate, I recognize that it is not by my strength or power, but the very spirit of the Lord that enables me to accomplish even the daily tasks. I am humbled by the opportunity to serve and I am blessed by the experiences I gain every year.
DHO: I noticed for several years now St. Mark has been hosting media conferences..how did that come about? ZH: A few of us were able to travel to media workshops in Dallas and Atlanta for a couple of years, but it is expensive to try to send an entire staff. As a leading ministry in our community we are called on often by other local churches for tips and suggestions that could improve media support. We decided that it would be beneficial to our volunteers and other churches to host a hands-on workshop that featured industry professionals to really teach the technical terminology as well as technique of media support for ministry. We have been blessed to have outstanding and award-winning professionals to minister to us each time.
DHO: What would be your number one tip for those NEW media directors who are just starting out? ZH: Most people who are asked by their pastor to head the media department have limited experience in the area if any at all. It is normally their commitment to the overall ministry that leads to their calling. It can be an overwhelming experience if you are not prayerful and unwilling to hit the ground running. Never assume that you know it all no matter your experience level. Working in ministry, especially full-time, is like no other experience you will ever have. The lows are deep and the highs are great. The work is never ending if you are doing the right things. The rewards are intangible for your commitment. Above all remain humble and seek God for a pure heart.
DHO: What would be your number one tip for those ministries looking to launch out into TV? ZH: Any ministry desiring to properly represent our Lord and Savior on television must remember Quality and Consistency. You have to budget for the level of television that you wish to achieve. Great video with poor sound is no good and great sound with poor video quality is no good. Proper lighting makes all the difference in the world. Prayer for the committed few, not the multitudes to serve in your media ministry. A few good people is much better than having to micro-manage a bunch of people. Once you go on the air be consistent with the message of your ministry and the style of your production. People expect a standard based on the first impression you give.
DHO: Tell us more about your upcoming conference, what can attendees expect? ZH: The Media In Worship Conference is April 24-26 and will offer hands-on workshop classes in Audio Recording, Sound Reinforcement and Video Recording. There will also be information about New Media (websites and streaming media) and the upcoming change in format to HD for television. Featured speakers include Paul Christensen of Omega Productions, David Overs of Oversound Productions, Eric Jackson, lead Video-Audio Engineer for New Birth Ministries, Atlanta, GA., Charles Harshaw of Dempsey Film Group, and Dwann Olsen of D&C Multimedia.
DHO: Anything else you'd like to add? ZH: I got involved in media by what some would say was accident. Our church used to outsource our video recording and that same young lady "happened" to ask me to help her with a brochure. My background is in print media and layout and design. Working a brochure project late one night turned into my first experience on a professional video camera. I was then asked to volunteer at the church on Sundays as a camera operator. My commitment to the call of God turned into a part-time job for a year and then a full-time position in January 2000. Everything I have learned has been hands-on and by the mentoring of Godly professionals.
