Greetings!
Young costume parade winner

What beautiful fall weather. The warm days and cool nights have really brought the flowers to life again.  It's a great opportunity to take advantage of the cool weather; get out in the yard and enjoy the season.

A little effort now will make your spring gardening much easier.  As your perennials start to fade, cut them back to the ground.  Leave your perennial grasses until spring so you can enjoy their great form all winter.  It is too early to winterize roses; wait until the soil has cooled.  Winterizing them now will trap the warmth in the soil, preventing them from going dormant and causing winter damage.  Learn more about fall gardening.

A lot of exciting events are coming up at Pinehurst.  Be sure to mark your calendar, you won't want to miss any.  Call today to sign up your business or organization for the Scarecrow Auction.

Our staff is here to answer any of your gardening questions and help you find solutions to your floral and gardening needs.

Happy fall gardening,

Vicky

September Gardening . . .

Fall is an excellent time to plant trees and shrubs.  The air is cool and the soil is warm.  That's a perfect situation for plants to grow and get established. Learn more . . .

Deep soak your existing trees and shrubs weekly.  Any plants that were planted this season need extra watering this fall.  Their root systems have not yet grown out into your native soil.  Make sure the original root ball is getting soaked at least twice a week in this warm weather.  Learn more . .

Fertilize existing plants (plants planted before this year) with Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Food. Newly planted trees and shrubs should be fertilized next spring.

Fall is a great time to control perennial weeds.  Dandelions, morning glory, and all perennial broadleaf weeds will not die over winter, they just come back stronger.  The best control for weeds growing in grass is Ferti-lome Weed Free Zone, apply now.

Make sure those weeds don't come back next spring!

Lawns:

Little fall weeds become big spring weeds. Many of our common lawn weeds sprout in fall, grow a healthy root system in the winter, and then explode in spring. By applying lawn weed killer in
the fall, you can get many weeds when they are young, before they become difficult to eradicate.

Broad-leaf weeds in the lawn are easily controlled by spraying with Ferti-lome faster-acting Weed Free Zone.  There are several convenient ways it can be applied, from a ready-to-use, to a lawn food plus weed killer, depending on your situation.  The garden center staff will be glad to answer all your questions and help you choose the best product for a beautiful lawn.

Planting Beds and other Non-Lawn Areas:
Tall weeds that have gone to seed in planting beds should be pulled, being careful not to let seeds drop. Smaller weeds should be sprayed with Hi-Yield KILLZALL, being careful not to spray your desired plants.

Vegetable Garden:

It's important to get all of the remaining weeds out of your vegetable garden.  Weeds all have seeds and dormant roots during the fall. This is why it is very important that you get rid of weeds that are in your garden,
even if all the vegetables are done for the year. This is an important step, not to skip, that will result in having the best garden in the future.

As with the planting beds, tall weeds should be pulled, being careful not to let seeds drop, and smaller weeds should be sprayed with Hi-Yield KILLZALL, which neutralizes when it hits the soil.  Broad-leaf weed killers contain 24D and will leave a harmful residue in the soil.
