Greetings!
Young costume parade winner

I hope you are enjoying your summer.  With the high temperatures, the landscapes and gardens that are properly watered and fed, are growing at a very rapid rate.  Unfortunately the weeds are growing even faster.  It is important to keep them under control.  If you allow them to go to seed you will end up with an even bigger problem.

One of the best ways to help the plants in your garden and landscape withstand the stress of such high temperatures is to mulch.  Mulching helps keep the soil evenly moist and the soil temperature cooler.  This helps relieve the stress of the fluctuation of heat and moisture to your plants.  Soil pep and colored mulch are great to use as mulch.  They look great and will also add organic matter to the soil.  Rock used as a mulch absorbs the heat and can be more damaging to the plants.

As I visit homes, look at customers' grass samples brought to Pinehurst, and drive around, I have noticed areas of stress in lawns.  This is usually caused by improper watering (too much or too little) and insect damage.  It's a good idea to find out exactly what's causing the problem, as the symptoms for insects may look like a lack of water.  Watering longer and less often, every other day instead of every day, is always the better idea.

Remember to feed your gardens, planters, and hanging baskets to keep them beautiful and healthy.

Get out and get some gardening therapy.  Early morning and evening are great times to spend enjoying your garden.

Happy Gardening,
Vicky

August Gardening

With the arrival of the dog days of summer, don't make your lawn and garden beg for attention.

Trees and Shrubs

To avoid stimulating succulent new growth that could suffer winter dieback, refrain from pruning and fertilizing trees and shrubs in August.  Fertilizing and pruning should be done later in the fall.  Don't prune spring blooming shrubs, such as lilacs and forsythias in the fall.  You will be cutting off the branches they bloom on.
Roses

Stop fertilizing and cutting back spent blossoms.  Allowing flowers to form rose hips will help roses get ready for winter.  Continue to deep soak them weekly.

Strawberries

During August and September, apply 1 to 1.5 inches of water each week to strawberries for higher yields next year.

Lawns

Now is the time to apply Ferti-lome Southwest Greenmaker.  Your lawn may be stressed from the heat, insect, or even disease damage.  It will respond well to a feeding.  Continue watering your lawn 1 to 1.5 inches of water each week.

Vegetable gardens

By picking cucumbers, summer squash, and beans, you will encourage them to continue producing.  Don't allow the fruit to become over mature, as this signals the plant to stop producing new fruits.  Keep up the watering so you don't stress the plants.

Sod Webworms

Are you wondering what's wrong with your yard?

Sod webworms damage may first appear in early spring as small dead patches of grass.  The summer generation of the caterpillar stage of sod webworms may cause turf thinning or irregular dead patches in late June into early August.  This occurs in sunny areas, often on south facing, steep slopes and banks, where it is hot and dry.  The damage is often mistaken for grub damage. They emerge from their tunnels in turf thatch at night and chew the blades off.

Adult moth of Sod Webworm

The adults are buff-colored or grayish-brown moths with a   wingspan of about an inch. They fly in the early morning or late evening in a jerky zigzag pattern, just a few feet above the lawn, which explains another common name for these pests, "lawn moths." They fly up from their hiding places when tall grass is mowed or shrubbery is disturbed.

Sod webworm moths don't feed on lawn grasses, but they drop their eggs into the grass as they fly. After 6 to 10 days, the eggs develop into very hungry caterpillars. These immediately begin feeding on grass blades, and are active only at night. As they feed, they build silk-lined tunnels in the thatch near the soil surface. During the 35 days or so that the webworm lives as a caterpillar, it can eat about 4 square feet of grass.

Natural Guard Grub Control Lawn damage mistaken for white grub infestation may be treated with grub control, such as Hi-Yield Grub Free Zone, which will not control the sod web worm.  The best and easiest control is with Natural Guard Grub Control granules.  You can also use Ferti-lome Garden Pet & Livestock spray or spinosad spray.

Thrips

Thrips are tiny, slender insects which feed on a large variety of sources, both plants and animals, by puncturing them and sucking up their contents. They are generally tiny (1 mm long or less) and are not good flyers, although they can be carried long distances by the wind. In the right conditions, many species can explode in population and swarm everywhere, making them an irritation to humans.

Thrips damage on rose Thrips feed on hundreds of different plants, especially during flowering, where they also feed on pollen.  This pest causes damage by feeding on developing flowers or vegetables, causing discoloration, deformities, and unsightly flowers and plants.

The best control for thrips is Natural Guard Spinosad, which is an organic insecticide.
