Greetings!
Young costume parade winner

How about this weather?  Over an inch of rain in our area
this last week and 19" at Pebble Creek ski area.  That is the best of both worlds. It was getting really dry and Mother Nature came through.

This warm weather has gotten a few of us ready to start spring gardening.  We have to remember it is really only January and we can have lots of winter yet to come.  The snow on the ground this morning is a good reminder of that.  To answer one question, don't even think about pruning your roses.

Now's a good time to turn your attention to your houseplants. Once you get started outdoors, they may fall by the wayside. Check them for insects. Many times insects go unnoticed until they are out of control.  Check out tips on common houseplant pests.  Give your plants a little love while you still can and don't miss the final days of Poinsettia Trade-in Days.

Take advantage of "Friday Flowers" to pamper yourself and  remember the people around you that could also use a fresh flower pick-me-up.

Think spring,
Vicky

Gardening in January

  • Replacing your poinsettia or tired old plant with a fresh new houseplant, will do wonders for your attitude and the air you breath. If you didn't have a poinsettia or old plant, it's just time for a new plant.
  • Check trees, shrubs, and perennials in your landscape for moisture. We have had above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation prior to last week.  Be sure to check the root area of plants you planted this past year, plants growing under an eave that prevents them from getting natural moisture, and plants that have a lot of foliage that will shed off the rain and prevent it from getting to the root ball of the plant. You may need to drag out the hose and give them a drink.
  • Pull out a paper and pencil and plan your garden for spring.  Be sure to include the kids on the plans for the vegetable garden.
  • Start perennial and herb seeds indoors.  It is too early for vegetables and many flowers.
  • Drop by with a few fresh flowers and brighten the day of someone who is confined to their home. "Friday Flowers" at Pinehurst is a great way to do that.

Nature's Remedy for Emotional Energy and Personal Fulfillment. Flowers Fuel the Soul and Create Inspiring Spaces.

From A to Z, vitamins are responsible for strengthening our senses, bolstering our bones and invigorating our bodies from the inside out. Research proves that flowers, being dubbed by some as Vitamin F, help feed our need for serenity, inspiration, wellness, gratitude, love and optimism.

Mind and matter are interconnected, according to personal fulfillment expert and best-selling author Jayme Barrett, as she points to university research studies linking flowers with happiness, creativity, compassion and tranquility. Flowers hold an intrinsic, natural energy that, when used throughout the home, can create positive shifts in emotions, and lead to truly inspired living.

The joy of receiving fresh flowers. When we are surrounded by nature, our emotions are calmed and harmonized. In fact, research from America's leading universities have cemented the connection that flowers have both scientific and emotional powers. As early as 2000, Rutgers University found that flowers create instant delight and happiness, and increase enjoyment and life satisfaction. Most recently, a Harvard University study introduced small bouquets of flowers into people's morning routines and discovered that respondents immediately perked up, much like they would with a morning vitamin.

"We need and deserve simple ways of creating homes where we feel happy and harmonious by disconnecting from the hectic pace of the world outside," says Barrett. "Flowers are a wonderful way to ease the stress of everyday life and refocus our emotions more constructively."

Flowers make us feel betterIt is simple and inexpensive to bring flowers into your home.  Containers of any size and shape will do.  Place them in your kitchen, where you see them throughout the day, as well as in your bathroom, where you see them as you begin your day.  It is not necessary to have large bouquets, although they are great as a special treat, but just one or a few blossoms will do the trick. A single rose, gerbera daisy, lily, alstroemeria or a stem of daisies are all you may need.  When you take advantage of "Friday Flowers" at Pinehurst, you add a daily dose of mood-boosting flowers to your life, at 1/2 off.
