Wow!  What an incredible fall we are having.  Take advantage of this beautiful fall weather to get all those projects done.

It's a great time to plant!  Don't put that shovel away yet, the planting season is just beginning. If you want bigger, stronger plants, that require less maintenance, then you want to plant in the fall!  The days are warm and the nights are cool. The cooler weather of fall creates a perfect opportunity for young plants to establish in a low stress environment. Add fresh color to your planters and beds with vibrant blooming garden mums, asters, pansies, cabbage and kale.

It's still too early to winterize roses; wait until the soil has cooled.  Winterizing them now will trap warmth in the soil, preventing them from going dormant and causing winter damage.

Don't miss the ISU Alumni Homecoming Kickoff Event at Pinehurst, Thursday, September 29th from 7pm to 10pm.  If you haven't experienced 5 Guys Burgers and Fries, this is your chance!  It is open to all past alumni and friends of ISU.  Cost is $20 per person.  Call 208-282-3755 to make reservations.

If you haven't already signed up to enter a scarecrow in the Scarecrow Auction, call Pennie at 237-6522 today.

Prevent Winter Damage Now!

Deep soaking trees and shrubs in the fall provides great winter protection

Established trees and shrubs

All plants need sufficient water in the fall.  Trees and shrubs transpire moisture in the winter.  Winter injury is usually caused by lack of moisture in the plant's system, rather than cold temperatures, provided the plant is hardy to our hardiness zone.  By deep soaking all plants in the fall, this can be avoided.  If you have a sprinkler system and shut it off early in the fall, you will need to bring out the hose and deep soak your plants once a week until the snow flies and it turns really cold.

Trees and shrubs planted this year

Newly planted plants need to be watered slowly and long enough to thoroughly wet the soil in the original root ball two or three times per week until very late in the fall. It can appear like the soil around a newly planted plant is real wet, but the root ball is dry.  The plants roots have not grown out into your natural soil and the foliage of the plant can deflect the water from your sprinklers from reaching the root ball, therefore they can't utilize that moisture.  Make sure there isn't any native soil on top of the root ball, which will prevent the water from penetrating to the root ball.

What plant adds the most value to your home?

Trees, trees, trees

Trees give the biggest return on your investment of all landscaping. Be sure to choose trees that grow well in our climate and are the best choice for your yard. Placement is very important.

Choosing the right tree and planting it in the right place adds more benefits to your home.  They reduce pollution, add beauty and value to your property, while creating wildlife habitats. The most tangible benefit is reducing energy bills.

For energy savings, the first place to plant a tree is on the west side of the house, followed by the east side.  Trees that loose their foliage in the winter are best.  They shade and cool in the late spring, summer, and early fall, but let in the sun, in the winter, to warm your home.

Fall is the ideal time to plant trees.  The soil is still warm, promoting good root development and the cool air temperatures relieve transplant stress. While the tops of trees and shrubs are losing leaves and shutting down, the bottoms, or root systems, are firing up!  More roots are developed on plants during the fall season than any other time of the year.  So, by planting in the fall, you're giving those newly planted trees and shrubs a head start on next year.  When spring comes, and those plants are thinking "flowers and leaves", they will have already started developing a root system last fall, that will help to support their spring growth.  In addition to root development, planting in the 'Fall' is less stressful on the plants and us with the cooler temperatures.
Need help with choosing the right tree or the right place to plant?  The nursery specialists at Pinehurst would be glad to help you.  We have a good selection of great trees to choose from.

Be Aware, It's Mating Season for the Venomous Hobo

Hobo SpiderThe Hobo Spider is a large brown spider (up to 1 inch across) that has a chevron pattern on the abdomen.  It can run across the floor at about 15-20 inches per second.  They make a funnel shaped web found in basements, crawl spaces, wood piles, rock beds, retaining walls and debris around structures.  Hobos can have a three year life cycle.

Human encounters are most likely in late summer and fall, during the spider's mating season.  Most bites occur when the spider gets into bedding or clothing and is trapped next to the skin.  The bite forms blisters in 15 to 35 hours.  The bite is NOT considered to be fatal, but if you think you have been bitten by a Hobo, it is advised to seek medical attention.  In about 50% of Hobo bites, nothing happens, because no venom is injected.

Control of this aggressive spider includes a good cleaning behind furniture and appliances, corners and crevices. If you see a Hobo, swat it with a fly swatter or rolled newspaper and crush it. It may be necessary to use an insecticide around the perimeter of your home.  We recommend Hi-Yield 38 Plus.  Traps can be folded and placed behind or under furniture.  Hi-Yield D.I.Y. spray is available for use inside along baseboards and in basements.
