Greetings!
Young costume parade winner

Summer is in full swing.  There's a lot of lush growth starting on trees and shrubs, thanks to our wet spring.

As the temperatures rise proper care of planters and hanging baskets is very important.  The same applies to flowers, vegetable, and herb plants growing in a container.  Be sure to water consistently everyday or as needed. It is best if you can water at approximately the same time every day.  Don't wait for wilting to occur. Don't over water, plants can't grow in standing water. Water just enough for water to start to drip from the drainage hole is the bottom of the pot.  Fertilize weekly with Ferti-lome Hanging Basket & Geranium Food, a water soluble fertilizer, to keep them growing, blooming, and healthy.

As I visit homes, look at grass samples brought to Pinehurst, and drive around, I have begun to noticed areas of stress in lawns.  This is usually caused by improper watering (too much or too little) and insect damage.

Happy Gardening,
Vicky

What's wrong with my plant?

The leaves are yellow and I don't know what to do!

Iron deficiency in leafThis is one of the most commonly asked questions concerning plants grown in high alkaline soils such as ours. Before the problem can be solved, there are a few things one must know.

Yellowing leaves could be the symptoms of a couple of problems. If the entire leaf is yellow, the problem could be nitrogen. In severe cases of iron deficiency, the entire leaf could be yellow, too.

The way to determine whether it is iron or nitrogen is by looking at the location of the yellowing leaves. Iron deficiency occurs on the new growth, toward the tips. Nitrogen occurs from the bottom of the plant on the old growth.

Iron deficient leafThe symptoms of iron deficiency, also known as iron chlorosis, appear in the leaves as green veins and yellow leaf tissue. If the deficiency is severe, the entire leaf may become yellow. Lastly, brown edges may begin to show up. Also in severe cases, chlorosis can progress to older growth in the plant.

Iron chlorosis is found where soils are highly alkaline. The high pH of the soil ties up the iron in the soil, making it unavailable to the plants. Iron is required for the formation of chlorophyll in plant cells and serves as an activator for respiration and photosynthesis. High soil temperatures and high light intensity can also increase problems with iron chlorosis.

EDDHA Iron ChelateApplying chelated iron is the best solution and last the longest. There are several formulations of chelated iron. The type of chelating agent recommended depends mainly on the pH value of the soil. In soil application EDDHA are preferable chelating agents for ensuring iron availability in alkaline soils.  It is the only iron we have found to be effective in our soil.  Chelated irons are more expensive but work better and last much longer. The powder form you mix with water is the most common. Read the label carefully before apply any product to your lawn or plants.

Apply iron products at the drip line of trees and shrubs. This is the area that plants take up nutrients and water from their roots. Always avoid getting any type of iron product on sidewalks, patios, driveways or brick. Residue from these products will leave stains that are difficult, if not impossible to remove.

You may never see this little guy, but you'll see the damage he causes

Black Vine Beetle

Black Vine Beetle
Vine beetles cause problems on a wide range of plants, both in its adult and larval stages. The adult beetles eat irregular notches in leaf margins, while the more damaging grubs destroy the roots and tubers of many plants.  It is very easy to not even notice until the damage is very severe.

Damage from a Black Vine BeetlePlants especially damaged by black vine beetles are lilacs, peonies, roses, and euonymus, plus many more.  The symptoms you will usually see are the notched leaves.  The beetles feed at night, so it is rare to see them on the plants.

This beetle is very hard to control.  Systemic insecticides are the only control. Chemicals such as Systemic Insect Control (Acephate) and Merrit (imidacloprid) can be used as a soil drench to control adult populations in the soil.  Spraying of the foliage with Acephate should occur 2 hours after sunset, when the beetles have emerged to feed.
