Greetings!
Finally, summer has arrived. Just as we have a hard time adjusting to the sudden bright, hot sun, so do some plants. They have gone from being cool and shaded all the time to the bright hot sun.
Newly planted annuals, perennials, and vegetables, with small root systems, that are not very deep, will really suffer when the top few inches of the soil gets dry. You may need to water them every day or two, applying enough water to wet the top few inches of the soil. Adding mulch, such as soil pep or grass clippings, will greatly help. Make sure you have not used a broadleaf weed killer on the grass you are using as mulch. You can gradually cut back on the watering and water for a longer period of time, less often.
Newly planted trees and shrubs may need an extra drink, too. Their root system has not emerged out into the natural soil. They can take up water only that is in their original root ball. Use the soil around the plant to form a reservoir to hold water and let it soak down directly into the root ball. Never put your native soil over the root ball of a new plant. The water will not percolate through into the root ball.
Happy Gardening,

Great plants you'll want for your landscape.
BLACK LACE™ Sambucus
This moderately fast growing shrubby plant will reach 6 feet in height and width, with, of course, eye catching fern like lacy maroonish black foliage. As an added bonus, it flowers in early June, with wonderful pink flower clusters that are lemon scented, followed by blackish red berries in the summer.
Grow it as a shrub, or limb it up like a small tree, this hardy plant will definitely add some new "wow" to your landscape.
By the way, Black Lace Elderberry will also do well planted in a large container!
Black Beauty Elderberry
Purple-black foliage provides season long interest and color. Pinkish-white to purple flowers have a light lemon fragrance. Dark berries in late summer attract birds. Grows 5 - 7 ft. tall and 5 - 7 ft. wide. Hardiness Zone 4 (-30 to -20ºF) Full sun to part sun
Wiegelia
Wine & Roses Weigela
Intoxicating, dark burgundy-purple leaves shimmer like a fine wine. Leaf color intensifies to near black in late summer. Hot pink-rose colored flowers add a touch of romance. Tubular flowers are adored by hummingbirds and butterflies. Blooms Spring through Fall. Height & Width: 4 - 5 feet. Hardiness Zone 4 (-30 to -20ºF) Plant in full sun for best color.
Pink Poppet Weigela
Shell-pink flowers are born in profusion in June, and then with a lighter re-bloom again in late summer. Emerald green foliage all season long contrasts nicely with the flowers. It is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Blooms Spring and Summer. Height & Width: 3 - 4 feet. Hardiness Zone 3 (-40 to -30ºF). Full sun for best color.
