Greetings!
What a spring we have had. Every time I look at the extended forecast it is going to be really nice next week, only to change when it is next week. It's been like a carrot dangling in front of our gardening noses. With the night temperatures staying high, it is safe to plant. It would be nice if the day temperatures would be warmer for the planter.
Don't miss out on the new Black Velvet and Pinstripe petunias. They are gorgeous and selling fast.
Whether you're doing container gardening, planting annuals, vegetables, perennials, fruit trees, trees, and shrubs, you can find a huge selection of great plants at Pinehurst. If you need help choosing the best plant for your area, we can help.
Save the date! All you ladies, be sure to call your girlfriends and plan to attend Ladies Night, June 23rd from 6 pm to 8 pm.
Happy Gardening,
Vicky |

Don't let lawn insects get the best of your lawn
Use the best lawn insect control now because timing is critical.
In Southeast Idaho, we have basically three types of insects that can cause severe damage to our lawns. Lawn insect damage is often mistaken for heat and drought stress. Timing of control is critical.
White Grubs are the immature life stage of Japanese beetles. They feed on the roots of grass, cutting off the plant's ability to take up water and nutrients. This results in yellowing or browning of the turf, making the grass easy to pull up. The major damage shows up when the weather gets hot and the turf becomes stressed. Grubs are relatively easy to control with Grub Free Zone. Apply June 1-15. Timing is critical.
Billbug damage usually appears in late-June through August. Light infestations in lawns often produce small dead spots that look like the turf disease, dollar spot. Sometimes the damage looks like irregular mottling or browning in the turf. Heavy infestations can result in complete destruction of the turf. Damaged turf turns a whitish-straw color. Soil under damaged turf is solid, not spongy as in white grub attacks. To confirm billbug attacks, grasp the affected turf and pull upward. If the stalks break easily at ground level and the stems are hollowed out or are full of packed sawdust-like material, billbugs are the culprit.Billbugs are hard to control. The best control is Grub Free Zone. Two applications may be necessary. The first application is June 1-15. The second is in August. Again, timing is critical.
Sod web worm damage may first appear in early spring as small dead patches of grass. The summer generation may cause turf thinning or irregular dead patches in late June into early August in sunny areas, often on south facing, steep slopes and banks, where it is hot and dry. They emerge from their tunnels in turf thatch at night and chew the blades off. The adult moths fly in late June and mid-August. These small moths fly up while mowing or walking around the lawn. The best control is Natural Guard Grub Control. You can also spraying with Ferti-lome Garden Pet & Livestock, acephate, or spinosad.
Visit the landscape solution center at Pinehurst and let the garden experts help you get a beautiful lawn.

Things to do now . . .
With the cold, wet spring we have had, the list of things to do in June really are the things we normally (what is normal, anyway?) do in May.
If you haven't done it already, fertilize your trees and shrubs with slow release Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Food.
Roses should already be pruned. They grow and bloom great when you use Ferti-lome Rose Food on a monthly basis.
As the spring blooming shrubs finish blooming, it is the time to trim and prune them back into shape, if they need it.
This is also the time to start to watch for adult root weevil damage, small round notches on the outer edge of leaves on lilacs, euonymus, roses, etc. If you see this type of damage, bring in a sample to our store and we will help you find a solution. These damaging insects are hard to control.
Spray Quaking Aspen for leaf spots that will appear as black dead patches on the leaves later in the season. This fungus develops in cool, wet spring weather, as the leaves come out. Our spring weather has been very favorable for the development of this condition. Now is the only time a treatment will be effective. If you had it on your trees last year, you will likely have the problem again. Once the black spots appear, it is too late for treatment. Visit the Garden Center for the right fungicide.
As the tulips and daffodil flowers fade, cut the flower stems back and let the foliage grow to produce food for next years blooms.
