Greetings!
This is the official planting weekend for many gardeners and the forecast is for perfect planting weather, cloudy days with a little sunshine, not too hot, and good nighttime temperatures. Newly planted plants love these growing conditions.
Whether you're doing container gardening, planting annuals, vegetables, perennials, fruit trees, trees, and shrubs, you can find a huge selection of great plants at Pinehurst. If you need help choosing the best plant for your area, we can help.
Good soil is always the main contributor to plants thriving, as long as you're planting the right plant in the right area. Don't skip the important steps of building great soil by adding a lot of organic matter, such as compost and soil pep, and turning the soil to loosen and add air. After you plant, mulch, mulch, mulch! This will keep the soil evenly moist, and the temperature of the soil more consistent. Your plants will grow so much better. The mulch will eventually be worked into the soil making it even richer.
Get out and get some gardening therapy this weekend. It's great for your body, mind, and soul.
The greenhouse is filled with planters and the flower shop with beautiful fresh flowers for your Memorial Day decorating. Call the flower shop at 237-6522 to order your fresh bouquets.
Let's get gardening and see you at Pinehurst this weekend!
Happy gardening,

Perfect Patios & Dream Decks Beautiful planters can transform your outdoor living area into that perfect patio or dream deck. Several planters coordinated with a color scheme add harmony to an area.
Choose reds and oranges to add warmth to a cool deck.
Blues, lavenders, purples and whites give off a cooling effect. White is great for an area you spend time in at night. While most other colors fade away, white will glow.
Planters with different foliages are very striking. The new coleus are fabulous and very easy to grow.
Container gardening is easy if you choose the right plant for the right area and follow a few easy steps. You can combine shrubs, perennials, and vegetables to any container for a unique touch. The secret to a beautiful planter is the soil, always use a good potting soil and no garden soil, the plants (Specialty Annuals locally grown at Pinehurst, perennials, vegetables, herbs, and shrubs from Pinehurst's great selection), and the fertilizer, both time release fertilizer at planting and weekly feeding with Ferti-lome water soluble fertilizer.
The planter experts at Pinehurst are waiting to help you. Custom planting is available for you if you want to leave the work to us.

Gardening for Kids
Children of all ages can enjoy gardening. The knowledge of gardening is a great gift to give your kids or grandkids. The secret is to keep it fun, simple, and easy. Children gain the knowledge of where their food comes from when growing vegetables. Growing flowers can also be very rewarding to them and teach them about nature.
If they are growing vegetables, make sure their garden has at least six hours of full sun for best results. You may want to give them their own little corner of your garden. If you don't have an actual garden spot, you can easily tuck in a few seeds or plants among your flower and shrub beds.
Children want to see results. Choose quick sprouting seeds such as marigolds, sunflowers, beans, peas, etc. If you have a lot of space, watching a huge pumpkin grow or zucchini plant grow is fun and incredible.
Children like to have fun, so keep a light approach. Try to spend short, frequent periods in the garden, remembering that children become bored easily.
This is a great opportunity to teach your children to properly store their tools - hoes can be very painful when stepped on and shovels should always be turned with the sharp side down when laying them on the ground. Gardening tools make great gifts for children.
Give guidance when asked, but try to let your child make the decisions on how their garden should grow. Expect high enthusiasm at the start, but realize like many of us, interest will wane towards the end of the season.
Expect some failures. These may be due to the weather, insects, over or under watering or any number of things. Discuss success and failures with your children. They can develop their problem solving skills by finding out what went wrong and what can be done differently next year.
Have fun! Children are naturally excited about growing things. Share this excitement with them. Look at something wonderous and wonder about it together.
