Don't let lawn insects get the best of your lawn
Use the best lawn insect control now because timing is critical.
In Southeast Idaho, we have basically three types of insects that can cause severe damage to our lawns. Lawn insect damage is often mistaken for heat and drought stress. Timing of control is critical.
White Grubs are the immature life stage of Japanese beetles. They feed on the roots of grass, cutting off the plant's ability to take up water and nutrients. This results in yellowing or browning of the turf, making the grass easy to pull up. The major damage shows up when the weather gets hot and the turf becomes stressed.
Grubs are relatively easy to control with Grub Free Zone. Apply June 1-15. Timing is critical.
Billbug damage usually appears in late-June through August. Light infestations in lawns often produce small dead spots that look like the turf disease, dollar spot. Sometimes the damage looks like irregular mottling or browning in the turf. Heavy infestations can result in complete destruction of the turf. Damaged turf turns a whitish-straw color. Soil under damaged turf is solid, not spongy as in white grub attacks. To confirm billbug attacks, grasp the affected turf and pull upward. If the stalks break easily at ground level and the stems are hollowed out or are full of packed sawdust-like material, billbugs are the culprit.
Billbugs are hard to control. The best control is Grub Free Zone. Two applications may be necessary. The first application is June 1-15. The second is in August. Again, timing is critical.
Sod web worm damage may first appear in early spring as small dead patches of grass. The summer generation may cause turf thinning or irregular dead patches in late June into early August in sunny areas, often on south facing, steep slopes and banks, where it is hot and dry. They emerge from their tunnels in turf thatch at night and chew the blades off. The adult moths fly in late June and mid-August. These moths fly up while mowing or walking around the lawn.
The best control is spraying with Ferti-lome Garden Pet & Livestock, acephate, or spinocad.
Visit the landscape solution center at Pinehurst and let the garden experts help you get a beautiful lawn.

| Frequently Asked Questions:
What should I do with my butterfly bush? It is dead on the top, but green at the bottom.
Cut your butterfly bush back to the ground and let the new growth develop.
When should I spray my apple tree?
For the control of apple maggots, coddling moths, and many more insects and diseases, spray with Bonide Fruit Tree Spray at blossom drop and every 10 to 14 days, up to 14 days til harvest. Always read and follow the package directions.
Can I spray my dandelions and keep them from coming back?
Yes, Ferti-lome Weed Out with "Q" is a new product that not only will control actively growing broadleaf weeds, such as dandelions, but also contains "Q", a pre-emergent herbicide that will prevent new broadleaf weed seeds from germinating. Always read and follow the package directions.
What is the best way to fertilizer my vegetable garden?
A great choice of fertilizer for a vegetable garden is a granular fertilizer formulated for vegetables or flowers. Fertilizer packages always display the fertilizer formulation on the contents. The 3 numbers may appear as 11-15-11, with 11 being nitrogen, which produces lush green growth, 15, which is phosphorous, which promote root, fruit, and flower development, and the last 11, which is potash, which gives the plant structure and strength. A vegetable fertilizer should have a larger middle number.
Granular fertilizers are slower than water solubles (ones you mix with water) to dissolve in the soil, so they last longer and are more economical to use.
