| Greetings!
The week of spring we did have was really nice. Too bad it didn't last!
I have noticed many plants are just barely coming out of dormancy. Don't be too quick to give up on them. The one thing that is growing just fine is grass, and that is usually in a place you don't want it to grow. Be sure to read the question and answer section to find a good solution to this problem.
This weekend is Pinehurst's 32nd Anniversary. To celebrate, there are some great buys to take advantage of. Bring all of your landscaping questions and attend the free Landscaping Seminar Saturday at 11 am.
Happy gardening,

| Frequently Asked Questions:
How can I get the grass out of my iris? I have dug the iris up in the past, cleaned the grass out, replanted the iris, and the grass came right back.
The grass is spreading by it's roots. When digging it out, it is impossible to get all the roots out. The roots are remaining in the soil and will start to grow very quickly. There is a product that you can spray over the top of your iris that will kill only the grass. It goes through the green foliage of the grass and kills the root system. You can use this product on and around annual and perennial flowers, trees, shrubs, vegetables, and ground cover. It will only kill grass. Always read and follow the directions on the label.
Is there an easier way of keeping weeds out of my garden?
By using a pre-emergent herbicide, you can prevent weeds and grass from sprouting. You may not get 100% coverage, but it is a lot better than weeding all the time. The important thing to remember is to get it on early in the spring, before the weed start to grow, because it does not control actively growing weeds. If you have small weeds that have sprouted, apply the herbicide and hoe it in. You will eliminate the young weeds and work the pre-emergent in. They will give you control all year long. Always read and follow the directions on the label.
Last summer I had Fire Blight in my apple tree. What can I do to prevent it from coming back this year?
This plant disease is caused by a bacteria that commonly affects apples, pears, and several ornamental plants. The bacteria spend the winter in cankers on the branches and twigs. Just before blooming, the bacteria ooze out of the cankers and are carried by splashing rain and insects to the apple blossoms. Honey bees and other insects continue to spread the bacteria to healthy blossoms. Summer storms can spread bacteria, leading to sudden and severe fire blight outbreaks.
Prune infected twigs and branches at least 12 inches beyond visible decay and destroy debris. Disinfect pruning shears after each cut. In the spring when 25% of the flowers have opened, spray with a bactericide containing streptomycin. Repeat at intervals of 3 to 5 days until the end of the bloom period.
