Start with your empty urns, planters, or baskets.  Use a container to sit down inside, that will hold water and is big enough to fill the opening of your planter and hold the greens you will add.  You may need to put an upside down empty pot under the container to keep it from going too far down in the planter.  If your planter has frozen soil in it, you can use a shallow  container to set on top of the soil or bring the planter into the house until the soil thaws.  Remove just enough soil to make room for the container. 

 

Fill the container  with floral foam (oasis) that has been soaked in warm water.  Secure the foam in the container so it won't tip.  Add water and your ready to insert branches.

 

Now grab your pruners and loppers and take a walk around your yard.  In my yard I found yew, pine, spruce, juniper and boxwood plants.  Just a few judicial cuts that no one will notice and I had more than enough greens for a beautiful planter.  Bare branches and berries add extra appeal.  By mixing the different foliages you add great textures and interest.  I add artificial berries for color.  Pine cones are also great to add.  Use a sharp knife to cut the bottom of the branches at an angle and insert them into the foam.  Try to get them into the foam at least 3" to 4".
