| Greetings!
What an interesting fall. A sudden frost after beautiful weather, has caused many flowers that usually last until very late in the fall,to suddenly die. They didn't have a chance to harden off before the really cold nights came. The trees and shrubs that usually have great fall color are having trouble knowing what to do.
If your planters were frosted, you can refurbish them with hardy fall color that will last for weeks. Check out the great selection of plants in the greenhouse.
It is still way too early to winterize your rose bushes. Wait until late fall, when the ground is starting to freeze. If you winterize them now, you will be trapping the warmth in the soil and they won't go into dormancy.
Don't miss the hands-on workshop, Saturday, October 17th. We will be making planters in pumpkins. They are a great decoration for your front step.
The greenhouse is set for the Scarecrow Festival. This fun event takes place tonight, October 15th. Don't miss it!
The spiders are moving in. Try Hi-Yield DIY Indoor Pest Control. Spray around the baseboards of your home and put out fresh spider traps.
Our staff is here to answer any of your gardening questions and help you find solutions to your floral and gardening needs.
Happy fall gardening,

Pruning Shrubs
I noticed a local commercial business had their lawn maintenance people do some fall clean up over the weekend. Part of what they did was to prune every shrub, in the entire landscape, into a round ball. They now all look like the same shrub, just different colors. This was not a case of the shrubs being overgrown, too crowded, or needing rejuvenated, they had been growing only 2-3 years in a very well designed landscape, which allowed for their full growth habits. The natural form of each shrub is now gone.
This is a form of pruning we call shearing. There are some shrubs that do benefit from that kind of pruning, such as potentilla, boxwood and barberries, because they grow in a round mound naturally and may become too leggy. If you are growing a hedge you may prune it by shearing.
There are different ways to prune shrubs. If shrubs are becoming overgrown, there is a way to prune them back without loosing their nature form. This is called plucking or thinning and heading back. Branches are individually cut back.
Thinning - is the least conspicuous method of pruning and results in a more open plant without stimulating excessive new growth. Considerable growth can be cut without changing the plant's natural appearance or growth habit. With thinning, cuts of a branch are cut off at its point of origin from the parent stem, to a lateral side branch, to the "Y" of a branch junction, or at ground level. This method of pruning is best done with pruning shears, loppers, or a saw --- not hedge shears. Repeated thinning, with no heading back, results in plants with long spindly branches. The entire plant may take on a straggly look.
Heading back - involves removing the terminal portion (end) of a woody branch by cutting it back to a healthy bud or branch. Heading back will stimulate shoot growth, below the cut, thus making the plant more dense. Repeated heading back, with no thinning cuts, results in a top heavy plant.
Pruning is a gardening practice that is frequently misunderstood and incorrectly practiced. All too often gardeners wait until a plant has out-grown its intended space before they decide to prune. Other gardeners incorrectly view pruning as an annual spring or fall ritual that must be done --- sometimes when it is not needed.
I have visited homes doing landscape consultations where one spouse has gone crazy with the hedge shears to the despair of the other spouse. You can correct the problem by selectively thinning the branches. Over time the shrub will return to its original form, unless it has been done over a long period of time. Old junipers may be too far gone and it might be time to remodel the landscape. I would also suggest a good pair of hand pruners and loppers as a Christmas gift.
A great place to find more in depth pruning information is NC State Pruning Shrubs or visit the professionals in the garden center at Pinehurst.
