Don't Let Grubs Get the Best of Your Lawn

Apply Hi-Yield Grub FREE Zone NOW!

The evidence of damage by grubs appears in August and September.  Patches of damaged turf may wilt, turn brown, and die, even though the turf is getting plenty of water.  The grubs have eaten the roots of the grass, preventing it from taking up water.

Hi-Yield Grub Free Zone, containing Merit, may be applied as a preventative measure.  It is the only season long grub control that is effective when applied in late spring to early summer.

Greetings!

Summer is in full swing.  There's a lot of lush growth on trees and shrubs, thanks to our wet spring. Annual flowers and vegetables are starting to reach their full potential.  We're having a hard time keeping up with the zuccini and green beans in our garden and our planters and hanging baskets are beautiful.

As I visit homes, look at grass samples brought to Pinehurst, and drive around, I have noticed areas of stress in lawns.  This is usually caused by improper watering (too much or too little) and insect damage.

We are very honored for having been chosen Southeast Idaho's Readers Choice Nursery/Greenhouse .  We thank you for your vote of confidence as we try to make your gardening experience enjoyable, rewarding, and successful.

Happy gardening,
Vicky

Black Vine Beetle

Black Vine Beetle
Vine beetles cause problems on a wide range of plants, both in its adult and larval stages. The adult beetles eat irregular notches in leaf margins, while the more damaging grubs destroy the roots and tubers of many plants.  It is very easy to not even notice until the damage is very severe.

Damage from a Black Vine BeetlePlants especially damaged by black vine beetles are lilacs, peonies, roses, and euonymus, plus many more.  The symptoms you will usually see are the notched leaves.  The beetles feed at night, so it is rare to see them on the plants.

This beetle is very hard to control.  Systemic insecticides are the only control. Chemicals such as Systemic Insect Control (Acephate) and Merrit (imidacloprid) can be used as a soil drench to control adult populations in the soil.  Spraying of the foliage with Acephate should occur 2 hours after sunset, when the beetles have emerged to feed.

ThripsThrips are tiny, slender insects  which feed on a large variety of sources, both plants and animals, by puncturing them and sucking up the contents. They are generally tiny (1 mm long or less) and are not good flyers, although they can be carried long distances by the wind. In the right conditions, many species can explode in population and swarm everywhere, making them an irritation to humans.

Thrips damage on roseThrips feed on hundreds of different plants, especially during flowering, where they also feed on pollen.  This pest causes damage by feeding on developing flowers or vegetables which causes discoloration, deformities and unsightly flowers and plants.

The best control for thrips is Ferti-lome Borer, Bagworm, Tent Caterpillar and Leafminer Spray (Spinosad), which is an organic insecticide.
