Don't Let Grubs Get the Best of Your Lawn

Apply Hi-Yield Grub FREE Zone NOW!

The evidence of damage by grubs appears in August and September.  Patches of damaged turf may wilt, turn brown, and die, even though the turf is getting plenty of water.  The grubs have eaten the roots of the grass, preventing it from taking up water.

Hi-Yield Grub Free Zone, containing Merit, may be applied as a preventative measure.  It is the only season long grub control that is effective when applied in late spring to early summer.

Greetings!

After the wettest June I can remember you would think we would have a reprieve in July, but no.  More flooding and hail have caused havoc with many gardens.

We are seeing lots of replanting of vegetables and flowers.  Many of the damaged plants will recover.  They still have a strong root system and will develop new leaves quickly. If they have been totally annihilated we are having a great sale on vegetable plants, buy one get one free.

Watch your plants, they're used to all the cool temperatures, humidity and lots of moisture. As the skies clear, the temperature rises, and the wind blows, they will dry out very quickly.  It will probably take a couple of weeks for some plants to adjust.  Watch for wilting and water accordingly. Once they have adjusted, you can cut back on watering.

Happy gardening,
Vicky

Be successful with proper watering of trees and shrubs

Watering a newly planted treeNewly planted trees and shrubs are at greatest risk of water stress and need 1-2 good soakings each week. The hot, dry winds we have make the situation even more critical.  A drip irrigation, 5-gallon bucket, slow running hose,  or soaker hoses laid up-side down and snaked under the branches,  or sprinklers adjusted to soak the area under the tree canopy are all good options.  If you are using a sprinkler or sprinkling system, the water may be hitting the lower foliage and bouncing off, not soaking the root ball.  It's a good idea to make a basin around the root ball with your natural soil. Fill that basin with water and let it soak down.

Trees and shrubs planted in the last 3 years still need extra water during dry periods.

Established trees, planted more then 3 years, can also be under stress and benefit from extra watering.  All trees benefit from water during hot, dry, and windy periods. Mulching around trees and shrubs help keep moisture in the soil, weeds down, and the soil temperature even.

Trees stressed from lack of water are more susceptible to insect pests, winter injury, yellowing foliage and other problems that may not show up until several months after the dry weather.

Evergreen trees and shrubs won't wilt to indicate they are under water stress but need water as described above.
