Don't Let Grubs Get the Best of Your Lawn

Apply Hi-Yield Grub FREE Zone NOW!

The evidence of damage by grubs appears in August and September.  Patches of damaged turf may wilt, turn brown, and die, even though the turf is getting plenty of water.  The grubs have eaten the roots of the grass, preventing it from taking up water.

Hi-Yield Grub Free Zone, containing Merit, may be applied as a preventative measure.  It is the only season long grub control that is effective when applied in late spring to early summer.

It's hard to believe the 4th of July is so near.  The weather has us believing April just ended. We passed the longest day of the year without even seeing the sun. The yards and mountains are lush with new growth, with all the moisture we've had.

With the moisture comes all kinds of problems we usually don't see.  The mushroom population has exploded and some tomatoes have yellow leaves from too much water.  Most problems will correct themselves with the return of our usually hot, dry weather.

It's still a great time to plant.  We have a great selection of trees and shrubs.  Stop in the nursery and see the beautiful shade loving hydrangeas and the Easy Elegance Roses.

Don't miss the great 3 day sale this weekend. All the specialty annuals are buy two-get one FREE!  You'll find them for sun, as well as shade.  We have many different varieties to choose from. They are great to use as a filler for a blank spot in a planter, hanging basket or planting bed.

Take advantage of our 30 minute, FREE landscape consultations at Pinehurst.  A beautiful landscape combines shrubs, trees, annuals and perennials.   We would be glad to help you with your landscaping needs.

Have a great gardening week and 4th of July.
Vicky
A welcomed change in the weather

Sun shineFinally, summer has arrived.  Just as we have a hard time adjusting to the sudden bright, hot sun, so do some plants.  They have gone from being wet all the time to drying out.

Newly planted annuals, perennials, and vegetables, with small root systems, that are not very deep, will really suffer when the top few inches of the soil gets dry. You may need to water them every day or two, applying enough water to wet the top few inches of the soil.  Adding mulch, such as soil pep or grass clippings, will greatly help.  Make sure you have not used a broadleaf weed killer on the grass you are using as mulch. You can gradually cut back on the watering.  Watering for a longer period of time, less often.

Newly planted trees and shrubs may need an extra drink, too. Their root system has not emerged out into the natural soil.  They can take up water only that is in their original root ball.  Use the soil around the plant to form a reservoir to hold water and let it soak down directly into the root ball.  Never put your native soil over the root ball of a new plant.  The water will not percolate through into the root ball.

Upgrading landscape adds value to homes, research shows

Landscaped Home

The Horticulture Research Institute's Journal of Environmental Horticulture recently published a report showing that upgrading a home's landscape increases property value.

Impacts of the quality of landscaping and percentage of tree cover on home prices were estimated from a sample of 75 home sales
within the Melonie Park neighborhood in Lubbock, TX, from 2003 to 2005. Estimates were derived using a regression of house sale
price on house characteristics, landscape quality, and tree cover. Homes that improved landscaping from average quality to good
or excellent quality increased selling price by 5.7 and 10.8%, respectively. Approximately 30% of the increase in sale value was
accounted for by added tree cover. The results show that each $1.00 invested in upgrading an average landscape to excellent quality
returns $1.35 in added property value.
