Partnering to save twentieth-century history
As part of the centennial celebration, Historic New England's launches its multi-year 100 Years 100 Communities initiative to partner with communities throughout the region to collect and share twentieth-century history. Partnerships already underway include:

Berlin factory pictureThe Berlin and Coos County Historical Society and Timberlane Regional High School - In the late twentieth century, the closing of paper mills brought hard times to Berlin, New Hampshire, formerly one of the world's leading producers of paper. This partnership has resulted in a documentary film on the dramatic changes to this once-thriving city. Hear the stories... 
 
The Farmer's Cow - In Connecticut, we are working with The Farmer's Cow, a cooperative of six family-owned Connecticut dairy farms, to tell the story of the changing role of independent dairy farms in the state. This effort will culminate in an exhibition opening at Roseland Cottage in Woodstock in June. Learn more...
 
The New Hampshire Commercial Fishermen's Association - In Portsmouth, New Hampshire, we have joined with the New Hampshire Commercial Fishermen's Association to document the twentieth-century story of their industry. Learn more... 
 
Boston Public Schools - Fifth grade students in Boston's neighborhood schools are discovering the importance of documenting the present for the future. Using digital cameras, they are recording the people and places they feel are the most important aspects of their schools. Their work will be presented in an exhibition at Historic New England's Pierce House in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and is being posted on our website. View their photo gallery...

Amethyst window at Winter Antique ShowFrom January 22 through 31, Historic New England is the subject of the featured loan exhibition at New York's prestigious Winter Antiques Show, with a display entitled Colonial to Modern: A Century of Collecting at Historic New England, containing highlights from the collection. The event includes an opening night party and a series of lectures by staff. Learn more... 

On March 15, members are invited to show off their skating skills at our party at the Boston Common Frog Pond Rink.
 
On April 24, members celebrate at the Topsfield Fairgrounds for a Birthday Bash, with food, entertainment, and plenty of fun activities. More...

Drawing Toward Home: Designs for Domestic Architecture with one hundred drawings dating from the late eighteenth through the mid-twentieth century is at Boston University Art Gallery through January 17. It then travels to the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., from February 13 to August 15. More... 
 
The Preservation Movement Then and Now, which examines the history of preservation in the region, is on display at Suffolk University's Adams Gallery in Boston. More...
 
America's Kitchens vignetteSurvey the history of the kitchen in America when the popular America's Kitchens exhibition tours to the Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages in Stony Brook, New York, from February 27 to July 11, and later goes on view at the Heritage Museum and Gardens in Sandwich, Massachusetts, from April 1 to October 31, 2011. Drawing Toward Home bookDrawing Toward Home, a beautifully illustrated catalogue of architectural drawings, with more than 150 illustrations from Historic New England's outstanding archival collection will be available in March. Currently available is the updated centennial edition of Windows on the Past, the quintessential book on Historic New England's properties, which includes a new introduction, and two new chapters. To order.
 
Members will be delighted by the newly-expanded Historic New England magazine. Issues during 2010 include articles by Leigh and Leslie Keno of Antiques Roadshow, Bill Littlefield of NPR's It's Only a Game, and Norm Abram of This Old House, plus more. Join now to receive your first 2010 issue.
 
Web users will be delighted to learn that a new HistoricNewEngland.org launches in April, featuring expanded information on the historic sites and programs, more preservation information for homeowners and colleagues, and access to Historic New England's collections.  Visitors will enjoy photographic tours of the historic properties and information on collections highlights at each site. Finding a program you'll enjoy and registering will be easy with the new calendar that can be searched by date, location, topic, and type of program. Historic New England staff will keep you updated with blogs on education, preservation, and more.

Program highlights
On Saturday, January 16, Historic New England and Boston University offer Drawing Toward Home, a symposium at which the scholars who worked on the exhibition and catalogue will discuss the wider ramifications of their research. The event is free and open to the public.
 
On Sunday, January 31, Historic New England, the Lexington Historical Society, and the Friends of Modern Architecture, Lincoln present Ask the Experts - Caring for the Modern House, with expert panelists discussing care and maintenance issues for owners of Modernist houses.
