Greetings!
As we all know, its getting hot. For most us, we are not seeing any relief in sight. So what can you do, to help prevent a fish kill. In this newsletter we are going to discuss a few options. |
Lets talk Diffused Aeration.
Bottom diffusers work great and will improve water quality and add much needed oxygen as well as cycling the lake. The question is, in these extreme conditions should diffused aeration be used? Yes but with caution. Here is why. When installing a new system, keep this in mind. A turnover occurs when your bottom layers of water have little to no oxygen.. This water is heavier and more dense than the warmer top water that has more oxygen. So aggressively cycling your pond or lake with a newly installed unit, could spark a fish kill or turnover. So here is a rule of thumb. After a new install, power up the unit and run for 30 minutes for your first day. Double that time everyday. Once you reach 8 hours, you can leave the unit on, if desired for 24 hours a day 7 days a week. More information on bottom diffusers are below.
NOTE
Keep in mind, if you have been running this type of system prior to this hot weather, you can continue to do so. This applies to people considering a new unit to avoid fish kills and turnovers.

Keeping tabs of your Fish Population
Ponds & Lakes are getting lower and lower. With record temperatures in the balance we are losing water fast. Demand for oxygen in a shrinking lake can become crucial. For example, if you had a 5 acre lake and it is now 3 acre, reducing your fish population will relieve some pressure. Larger fish require more oxygen so, removing some top predators will help. As rains fill your pond back up, restocking may become necessary. An article on Biomass can be found here. Biomass and Harvesting or you can visit this link on our blog. Harvesting Article |
No Water, Empty Pond
If your pond has gone dry, lets do what we can to make the best of the situation. If you have the equipment, clean out areas that has silt or sludge buildup. Cleaning out your pond can make it more enjoyable when mother nature decides to fill it back up. Make the effort to repair spill ways and dams. Be sure when cleaning out your pond, not to break the seal. Usually this layer will have a heavy clay mixture. Establish spawning areas, after your clean out project. Put in pea size gravel for bass and bluegill spawning. Moving in sand in these areas can help as well. Stacking and securing wooden pallets will help with minnow populations as well as provide good structure for other fish. I have included some relative links below that you will find helpful.

Fountain for Aeration?
Fountains can be used for aeration. Consider the spray or spray options when purchasing a fountain. Fountains that have a mist will rapidly increase evaporation and will provide little to no aeration. Fountains that have props or impellers usually provide larger droplets and less mist. This provides a better oxygen transfer. Follow the link below for more information.
