New Scout Recruitment is Here!
Pack Meeting

It's time to invite new families to join Scouting!!  By now your Pack should a launched your Cub Scout sign-up promotion campaign.  Promotional supplies were distributed at the July Roundtables.  Packs received yard signs, posters, and the 'Parent's Guide to Cub Scouting' brochures.  It's time to use these tools!!!

Remember, our goal is to saturate our communities with the promotional materials.  Go beyond your school and set up the yard signs and posters at churches, restaurants, supermarkets and other places families frequent.  Use your social networking sights to invite your friends to be a part of the Cub Scout adventure.  Make sure you have a visible presence at 'Meet the Teacher' and 'School Open Houses' and hand out the 'Parent's Guide to Cub Scouting' brochures.  Use the brochures in your church bulletins.

In mid August you will begin to see billboards and hear radio spots letting families know that now is the time to join Cub Scouts.

Follow the plan...  Families need Cub Scouts...  You need to "get the word out" that they can join you Pack!!

Marketing/Promotions Plan

  • "Get the word out." - Communicate your Pack's School Night Sign-Up to friends and parents whom with you come in contact.
  • Social Networking - Get your parents to use their social networking sites; Face Book, Twitter..., to inform their friends about your Sign-Up Night.  (Have them give a personal testimony of how Scouting has benefitted their family.)
  • Make sure you have posters of Scouts in action; in your school, church and other places that will give parents info on when they can sign up.
  • Develop an incentive for Peer-to-Peer recruiting.
  • Have an impressive presence at Meet the Teacher & Open House.  (Tents, Flag ceremony, Cub Scout greeters, interactive booth...)
  • The day before and the day of your School Night, see if the school will allow Cub Scouts in uniform to welcome parents and students in the drop off line.
  • Make sure all your Cub Scouts proudly wear their uniforms the day of your School Night.
  • Make sure Leaders & Cub Scouts are at your School Night ready to welcome new families.
  • Have an organized School Night.  First impressions are crucial.
  • Make sure you have a Pack calendar to give to the new families.
  • Make reminder calls to all new Cub Scouts to insure they attend their first meeting.
  • Update your BeAScout.org pin.

Summer Camp Wrap-Up

Over 4,100 youth and 700 adults from 14 states and four different countries experienced Camp La-No-Che's Summer Camp Adventure this past summer.

Boy Scouts experienced the ATV and PWC power sports programs, conquered the sky with the Alpine Tower, Project COPE and our Climbing Tower, traveled back in time with our Native American Village and activities, sailed away at the Lakefront, took aim with the Shotgun, Rifle and Archery areas and swam away at our crystal clear action packed pool.

While this past summer has drawn to an end, Boy Scouts and Troops should look toward the 2012 Boy Scout Winter Camp December 27-30 at Camp La-No-Che.  This action packed 4 day experience will deliver many of the same program and merit badge earning opportunities as summer camp but with a winter feel.

Communications
Prepared. For Life.

Let us know and we will Succeed.

Communication, it's where it starts - It's where it ends. Nothing happens if no one knows.  We need to communicate the Plan, the Execution, and the Outcome. We need to keep our Membership informed. This Membership includes our Scouts, our Parents, our Unit Leaders, and our Council/District Leadership. This Membership encompasses all genders and a wide range of ages from our youngest Tiger Cubs to our most Senior Scouters. It's a lot of people from different backgrounds and with different abilities. They come from many different media backgrounds, from the world of print to the "E World".

How do we reach them all? It's a huge task to reach every individual Scout, individual Leader and Parent. We also need to include and involve every Unit, our District Committees, and our District Commissioner Staffs. If we are all informed, we are all involved. We are all instrumental in making the best Scouting Program. We are all then assured to receive what we want and deserve in our Scouting Adventure - it will be success for everyone.

We need to think in and out of the box, use every communication venue available to us. We need to use ingenuity, creativity, and be motivated in our approach to communications. There are so many options to choose from - maybe we need to use them all to succeed in our communication efforts.

Let's see what is in our communication arsenal for our use:

Verbal - Face to face communications has been used and been successful for years. We need to continue this success and continue our communication to and within our Units, District Committees, within and through our District Commissioner Staffs, and at our Roundtable Meetings.

Electronic - Mass communications made easy. E-mail the information directly to our Scouts, their Parents, and our Leadership and/or with Yahoo Groups throughout the Council, Districts, and Units. Reach our whole Membership with the push of a button. Websites or E-Newsletters not only get the information conveyed to all but can tell of the successes and even show the adventure with pictures. Looking for speed or immediate notifications let's get the information out through texts or twitter, it's the now communication media.

Reaching lots of people with lots of info using lots of communication venues - that's what we need to do to make the best Scouting Program and cause success for every Scout and Adult alike. Communication is an important and necessary part of the Scouting Mission. We cannot leave anyone out. Everyone deserves to know about and be part of the Scouting Adventure. Lets enable them to be "Prepared. For Life".

Make Your Voices Heard

Voice of the Scout

It is our Scouting Program and it's time to make our voices heard. Scouting has celebrated its first hundred years of promoting and living the Scouting Mission and now we are challenged to create its success for the future - for its second hundred years.

It doesn't have to be the way it use to be, the Scouting Mission is fluid and change is continually needed to keep it current for us the Scouts and the leaders. Our voices and our leadership are needed to guide and excel in Scouting's future exceeding in ways never contemplated in Scouting's past adventures. We know what's now - we as the Scouts, the parents, and the leaders know what we want - we are charged with creating Scouting's future.

This leadership and success in our challenge must start with us at the Unit level, District level, and Council level working as one team. The Voice of the Scout program is our venue to: to be heard - make it happen - to cause change and advancement.

In September you will receive more information concerning the Voice of the Scout via e-mail and at your District Roundtable Meetings. Please take the time to take the survey you receive. It's our responsibility to make the best Scouting program possible. We can make the difference - we must make the difference - it's our future.

What's Going Around: Chickenpox!
What's Going Around ...
Since the Chickenpox vaccine was introduced in the U.S. in 1995, the number of Chickenpox cases has fallen by as much as 90 percent. But in the last four weeks, Centra Care locations have seen 23 patients with the virus - a startling comparison to this same time period last year, when only four patients were treated.

Of the 23 patients diagnosed with Chickenpox, 12 were visiting from foreign countries (primarily the United Kingdom) and all others were Florida residents.

Learn More:

Chickenpox is a very contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It causes a blister-like rash, itching, tiredness and fever. Chickenpox can be serious, especially in babies, adults and people with weakened immune systems. It spreads easily from infected people to others who have never had Chickenpox or received the Chickenpox vaccine. Chickenpox spreads in the air through coughing or sneezing. It can also be spread by touching or breathing in the virus particles that come from chickenpox blisters.

The best way to prevent Chickenpox is to get the Chickenpox vaccine. Some people who have been vaccinated against chickenpox can still get the disease. However, the symptoms are usually milder with fewer blisters and mild or no fever. For most people, getting Chickenpox once provides immunity for life. Though it is not common, you can get Chickenpox more than once.

Chickenpox usually lasts about 5 -10 days. The classic symptom of Chickenpox is a rash that turns into itchy, fluid-filled blisters that eventually turn into scabs. The rash may first show up on the face, chest, and back then spread to the rest of the body, including inside the mouth, eyelids or genital area. It usually takes about one week for all the blisters to become scabs.

Other typical symptoms that may begin to appear 1 -2 days before rash include:

  • High Fever
  • Tired
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Headache

Call a health care provider if the person:

  • Is older than 12 years of age
  • Has a weakened immune system
  • Is pregnant
  • Develops any of the following:
    • fever that lasts longer than 4 days
    • fever that rises above 102°F (38.9°C)
    • any areas of the rash or any part of the body becomes very red, warm, or tender, or begins leaking pus, since these symptoms may indicate a bacterial infection
    • extreme illness
    • difficult waking up or confused demeanor
    • stiff neck
    • frequent vomiting
    • difficulty breathing
Once someone is infected, Chickenpox cannot be stopped, but its symptoms can be treated. Cool baths and calamine lotion (which has special mineral oils that treat rashes, bumps, and bruises) can help people feel less itchy.

Every Centra Care location treats adult and pediatric patients without an appointment or you can make a No Wait Online Reservation at centracare.org. If you or someone in your family needs a vaccination or suffers from an illness, allergy or injury that needs medical attention, Centra Care has 21 locations, serving you 7-days a week.

CentraCare - Official Urgent Care Provider of the Boy Scouts of Central Florida
From the Council Commissioner
Bo Terry, Council Commissioner

Can you believe it, summer is almost over and the kids will be back in school before you know it. As we start to prepare for our annual recruiting campaign with "School Nights", let's change our focus to not only work recruitment for the next couple of months but for the whole next year. Here in Central Florida Council, we only serve about 17% of the available youth in our geographical area. We can do better! The Scouting program is so important to the development of America's "leaders of tomorrow" that we have got to get more of our youth involved.

How do we do that; we have got to take ownership of our program and talk to everyone we know and as well as those we don't and tell the Scouting story. At school, at work, at church, anywhere else in the community when you get the chance to share this wonderful youth program we call Scouting.

Additionally, keep in mind, we always need adult volunteers; Cub Masters, Den Leaders, Scoutmasters, Unit Commissioners, Committee Members, etc. When I ask adults to consider volunteering for a position in Scouting, the first thing they usually say is; I don't know anything about that position. This is true even if they are "old" scouter's or someone who is new to Scouting. This brings me to Training!

Probably the best way that you can help as a current volunteer is to ensure you are trained in the job that you volunteered for. The National BSA organization has invested a significant amount of time and resources in new, updated training materials that are being made available now via on line as well as other forms of media. In addition, watch District, Council and National web sites for scheduled training courses that may be of interest to you on an individual basis, with some being offered at the high adventure bases, i.e. Philmont, Sea Base, Northern Tier and soon the Summit! So you can see, you will not only get world class training, you can have a great time while doing it.  Of course, you don't need to go to the expense of traveling to one of these locations to get world class training, The Council conducts the University of Scouting annually and Districts conduct training on a monthly basis for most courses required for both new and seasoned adult leaders. My point; participate in training! It is well documented that those who get trained enjoy a better scouting experience and the units they belong have stronger programs that retain and recruit more kids.

Now, back to the adult recruiting point; when you recruit a new adult volunteer, make a promise to get them trained ASAP. Keep that promise! The training is available, talk to your Council and District Training Committees; they can assist in getting you the needed information on any training needed.

In closing, a new Scouting year in quickly approaching, let's make 2013 a Great Scouting year by serving more youth in our community, together we can make this a reality.

Yours in Scouting,

- Bo Terry
Council Commissioner
