Attention Cub Scout Packs!!

If you set a date, time and location for a Back to the Pack Event in late July or early August, the Central Florida Council will mail an invitation, on your behalf, to all your members.

And, in hopes of getting families reconnected with your Pack, we will also extend the invitation to past members who have dropped out of Scouting.

A Back to the Pack Event is a great way to welcome everyone back from summer break, recruit new leaders, and gets organized before your School Night Sign-Up.

If you have not already done so please go to backtothepack.cflscouting.org and provide the requested data.
Recruitment Campaign making a Statement in Central Florida
Pack Meeting

What do you get when you combine 40 billboards, Radio Spots, and Packs executing a well planned Join Scouting promotional plan?

You get a marketing and promotional campaign geared to get families to become a part of the Central Florida Council.

Starting in July our Packs, with the help of our Districts and Council, will begin a "Get the Word out" campaign to invite families to become part of our Scouting adventure.  Through the use of billboards, radio, newspaper ads, social media, yard signs and posters we will make sure every family of a Scout-age youth will have the chance to join Scouting.

Here is what each Pack is being called to do:
  • "Get the word out." - Communicate your Pack's School Night Sign-Up to friends and parents to whom you come in contact.
  • Social Networking - Get your parents to use their social networking sites; Face Book, Twitter..., to inform their friends about your Sign-Up Night.  (Have them give a personal testimony of how Scouting has benefitted their family.)
  • Make sure you have posters of Scouts in action; in your school, church and other places that will give parents info on when they can sign up.
  • Develop an incentive for Peer-to-Peer recruiting.
  • Have an impressive presence at Meet the Teacher & Open House.  (Tents, Flag ceremony, Cub Scout greeters, interactive booth...)
  • The day before and the day of your School Night, see if the school will allow Cub Scouts in uniform to welcome parents and students in the drop off line.
  • Make sure all your Cub Scouts proudly wear their uniforms the day of your School Night.
  • Make sure Leaders & Cub Scouts are at your School Night ready to welcome new families.
  • Have an organized School Night.  First impressions are crucial.
  • Make sure you have a Pack calendar to give to the new families.
  • Make reminder calls to all new Cub Scouts to insure they attend their first meeting.

National Youth Leadership Training
NYLT

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is a leadership course for Boy Scouts who have achieved the rank of First Class and are thirteen (13) years old by the start of NYLT and Venture Crew members who have completed VLSC and are fourteen (14) years old by the start of NYLT.

The staff of NYLT is happy to announce that registration for the summer course is now open.  The course will run from noon on Sunday, July 29, 2012 to early evening on August 3, 2012, at Camp LaNoChe, Paisley, FL. The cost is $195 and includes all supplies and food.  We can only accommodate 96 youth, so please register early!  You may register online at Camping & Activities on the Central Florida Council web site, or contact Michael Burton (321-360-2659) or Marilyn McAndrew (321-243-9138).

NYLT is NOT summer camp!  The participants are busy with activities all day!  Some of the activities in the schedule include Geo caching, pioneering projects, games, swimming, and of course class room sessions!  The participants are grouped into teams and will participante as a member of their team.  This is a boy lead program, sessions and activities are led by youth; there is very little adult participation.    The adult staff is there as support and oversight - the youth are responsible for the program and we have an awesome youth staff!

This is a life altering experience!  The participants will grow in confidence and learn firsthand leadership skills.  Some adults have called this Wood Badge Light - it's a mountain top experience!

The staff hopes you will make the decision to attend the summer session of NYLT.

Who is the Council?
Prepared. For Life.

Who is the Central Florida Council? It's you, and me. It's every Scout, every Parent, every Leader, and every Professional. It's all of the Units - Packs, Troops, Crews, Ships, Teams, and Posts - plus the District and Council Leadership combined.  We work as one Team in unison providing and improving the Scouting Program. We keep the Scouting Principles strong by living and promoting the Scout Oath and Scout Law. We are "Continuing Our Journey" and are "Prepared. For Life".

Our Journey as an Adult in Scouting is to provide the best Scouting Program possible for our Scouts - that is our mission. This starts and finishes with us the Adult Volunteers - the Scout Leaders - Cub Masters, Den Leaders, Scoutmasters, Advisers, Coaches, Unit Committee Members, and every Parent working together as a Team with District and Council Leadership. We need you the Adult to be a Leader; we need everyone to create success and growth.

Our job as an Adult is a big one - Membership, Finance, and Program (Advancement, Training, Camping, and Activities/Civic Service). That's why we need every Adult involved. Every entity is as important as the other in our progress and success.

Membership - the reason for the Scouting Program, our Scouts and their families. Promotion and marketing equals recruitment and who best to do this are the people who most enjoy and believe in the Scouting Program - us the Adults. Membership doesn't stop at the newly recruited Scout though, it continues on throughout each Scout's, Scouting Adventure by keeping them in the Program - Scout Retention.

Finance, is needed to provide and build the exciting and educational Scouting Adventure. We as Adults are the Scouting Community but more importantly we are also the Central Florida Community. We are friends, neighbors, and peers in business with the Scouting Program's financial supporters. These relationships make us the prime "ask makers". Who else knows them as well as we do, who else would be as easily successful.

Program, the reason our Scouts and Adults are involved, the fun, the outdoors, the challenges of mind and body. It is what keeps our Scouts and us involved - Scouting's Promise.

Advancement is the recognition of our Scouts for a job well done in advancing in their Scouting Careers. Yes, this advancement is the Scout's job because it is their Scouting Program, but our Adult support as their guides, their coaches, their advisers is most definitely needed. The Scouts success is important to them so it must be a priority to us as the Adults.

Training Scouts is of utmost importance. Training of ourselves, the adults, the teachers and leadership for these Scouts must also carry equal importance and be a necessity. Never to neglected or forgotten. We train, but also must be trained.

Camping in the great outdoors is the backbone of the Scouting Program. It's the time our Scouts learn to become men and women, fend for themselves in the outdoors, and learn to survive in what nature may offer - the good or the bad. We the Adult Leaders must be supportive and also guide our Scouts in their transformation from youth to adult. Our payment is plentiful for these efforts as we get to join them in the enjoyment of their adventures.

Activities/Civic Service are fun activities our Scouts enjoy and also where they support our local communities by providing service. They learn leadership through this community involvement. We, the Adults are the pillars within our communities, hold the knowledge, and have the strengths that our Scouts eagerly want to establish. Our job as the Adults is to help make our Scouts, the future leaders of our communities and country.

Our Scouts need you the Adult, as the Scouting Program only operates and succeeds with our involvement. Scouting needs you to give your time willingly and you will enjoy and grow within the Scouting Program right alongside our Scouts. "Prepared. For Life" is not just the Boy Scouts of America's motto, but is what will cause the success of our Scouts now and in their future.  Adults and their Scouting Leaders must be there for our Scouts. It is through these efforts that we are "Continuing our Journey".
Popcorn Time!
Popcorn!Program is why we sell popcorn: The first step in the 2012 Popcorn Plan is for your unit to plan its "Ideal Year of Scouting". What's Going Around: SINUSITIS
What's Going Around ...
If it seems like your cold just won't go away, and now the runny nose and cough are accompanied by facial pain and tenderness, you may have What's Going Around - Sinusitis, a bacterial infection of the sinuses.

Learn More:

Viral sinusitis is present with all colds, but a doctor's diagnosis of sinusitis typically refers to that caused by a bacterial infection.

Sinusitis occurs when one or more of the nasal passages are unable to drain due to inflammation. Many of the other symptoms of sinusitis mimic the common cold. In fact, sinusitis often starts as a cold, but the common cold typically runs its course in about a week. Sinusitis, on the other hand, can last weeks or months if left untreated.

Symptoms:

  • Pressure/Pain in the Head and Pain or Tenderness of the Face (may intensify when you lean over)
  • Nasal Congestion
  • Coughing
  • Fever
  • Sore Throat
  • Nasal Discharge
  • Postnasal Drip
Sinusitis itself is rarely contagious, but the cold symptoms that precede it can be easily spread from person to person. If your sinusitis is bacterial in nature, your doctor will likely prescribe an antibiotic to shorten its duration. Symptoms may also be treated with over-the-counter medications to alleviate pain, fever and congestion. A humidifier or nasal saline mist and drinking plenty of fluids can be helpful to thin the mucus.

The following can help to prevent sinusitis:

  • Wash/sanitize your hands often
  • Avoid people who have colds or other upper respiratory infections
  • Use a humidifier to increase moisture
  • Avoid pollutants such as smoke
  • Get a flu vaccination
  • Treat the symptoms of an upper respiratory infection quickly, so they don't get worse
Every Centra Care location treats adult and pediatric patients without an appointment or you can make a No Wait Online Reservation at centracare.org. If you or someone in your family needs a vaccination or suffers from an illness, allergy or injury that needs medical attention, Centra Care has 21 locations, serving you 7-days a week.

CentraCare - Official Urgent Care Provider of the Boy Scouts of Central Florida
From the Council President
Bill Sublette, Council President 2011-2013

Each week during the summer I get the opportunity to speak with Scoutmasters whose Troops are attending Camp La-No-Che. It is one of my favorite duties as Council President because each week I come away realizing how fortunate we are to have Camp La-No-Che as the crown jewel of our Council.

Without exception, each week Scoutmasters at the dinner rave about the quality of our facilities, go on and on about how special Jimmy Sawgrass' Native American program is, compliment us on our National Youth Leadership Training course, commend us on our groundbreaking personal watercraft and all-terrain vehicle programs, and just generally gush platitudes about what a special place for boys Camp La-No-Che is and how lucky we are to have such a great facility and such quality programs.

Camp La-No-Che is a constant work in progress, though, and if you've camped there through the years you all have noticed that we are continually improving the camp. Old timers remember when the camp dining hall was in what is now the Rotary Lodge. Thirty years ago there was no pool for the boys. And over the past few years we've renovated 18 campsites, built 10 new ones, and added an ADA compliant campsite. In fact, just last week we cut the ribbon on a new Bike Barn built through the generosity of the Bond Foundation, and as you read this we are installing two modular units donated by Orange County Public Schools to house our camp counselors.

Notwithstanding our recent improvements, we still have much to do.  We need a Camp Welcome Center to speed the weekly registration process and to protect staff and campers in inclement weather. We are in desperate need of repairs to our current pool and need to add a second pool to accommodate the growth in our campers. Jimmy Sawgrass has a grand vision for making his Native American program even better, including the construction of Seminole village complete with chickees and a permanent home for his center and museum. The Rotary Lodge, which has stood for 55 years, is dilapidated and in need of a major renovation so it can serve as a conference and training center. And we need a more permanent solution than temporary modular buildings for our camp counselor housing needs.

All of this cost money, and lots of it. Its costs the Council $65,000-$100,000 to renovate a campsite or build a new one.  We estimate it will cost over $250,000 to renovate the Rotary Lodge, $100,000 to build a Welcome Center, $75,000 to build the Native American village we want, $100,000 for a permanent fix to our camp staff housing woes, and over $1 million for a new pool. And we desperately need to build a maintenance reserve.

This is why we are in the midst of a Capital Campaign, and this is why we need your help. If you have a relationship with a potential donor or can contribute to our Capital Campaign, please let Nancy Freeman, the Council's Director of Development, know. Nancy's telephone number is: (407) 790-6325, and her e-mail is Nancy.Freeman@cfcbsa.org. Many of our camp improvements have been donated.  Thus, if you are in the construction industry as an owner or principal of a company which can donate construction services or supplies, let Nancy know that as well.

Let's all work together to keep Camp La-No-Che the special place it is!

Yours in Scouting,
- Bill Sublette, Council President
