Eagle Scout Starts Electronics Recycling Business to Benefit other Scouts

Adam Avellan became an Eagle Scout last September in Troop 787 in Seminole County. His Eagle Project was the recycling of used and unwanted computers and electronics.Having enjoyed his project so much, Adam decided to start his own business, "Sparks of Hope, LLC," which will, in part, help to raise funds for organizations like the Boy Scouts of America and other Non-profits by recycling old electronic equipment, cables, lights, metal or computers. The proceeds will go to help other Eagle Scout candidates fund their Eagle projects for their community, and also provide funding for other non-profits in the community that are in need of funding.
Adam's company has already helped one Eagle Project with funding and he hopes to continue this business for many years to come.
What a great way to give back to Scouting!

Central Florida Council Policy Change - Online Advancement
Advancement reporting is a requirement of the Boy Scouts of America. Internet Advancement makes this a simple process that can be done from your home computer. Through Internet Advancement, units will be able to enter advancements at any time, print reports, obtain current rosters from the BSA system, and print order sheets for the Scout Shop. The Central Florida Council will be requiring all units to use internet advancement as of June 1, 2012. As stated above this will allow units to enter advancements at home and retrieve reports when needed. How Internet Advancement WorksEach unit needs to select an advancement processor who is granted access with a Council-provided unit ID. The processor will report his or her unit's advancements each month and submit a final Advancement Report by December 31st of each year. The only rank that may not be entered through this system is the Eagle rank due to documentation requirements. Any nominated recognitions such as lifesaving and meritorious action awards will also be required to be submitted by paper. Internet Advancement is accessed through our council's website. A first time unit advancement processor will need to access the Central Florida Council's website. On the home page, click on the "Leaders" button and then click on "Advancement". After you go to the online advancement website you will be asked to log in, accept a Confidentiality agreement, and provide registration information (your name, email address, telephone number and a new password) and then move to an overview page with additional instructions. The next time you log in you will be able to skip the first three steps above and go directly to selecting members for advancement.
Units will be able to print, sign and forward the report to the council. When you purchase advancements, it will be required to print out a copy of the Internet Advancement Report/Unit Awards Summary and bring it with you to the Scout Shop. If you have questions about On-Line Advancement, please contact Lynette Dukes at the Central Florida Council office. Lynette will be able to help answer questions, help reset passwords, and assist you with problems with creating reports. The contact email is Lynette.Dukes@cflscouting.org and phone number is 407-703-0225.

What's missing for SCO_TING growth in 2012?
It will not happen without you!! On June 11th we will officially lunch our 2012 New Scout Recruitment Campaign. Over the next seven months we need everyone's help to get more families to become part of the Boy Scouts of America. We are asking each of you to participate. We have programs that are a great fit with families that have kids ages 7 - 20!! By the end of June we will have secured the majority of the School Night dates for our Packs. District Executives are working closely with superintendants and principals to coordinate a time for school visits and school night sign-ups.
Cub Scout Packs, once your District Executive gives you your School Night Sign-up Date, please begin working on the following items:
- "Get the word out." - Communicate your Pack's School Night Sign-Up to friends and parents with whom you come in contact.
- Social Networking - Get your parents to use their social networking sites; Face Book, Twitter..., to inform their friends about your Sign-Up Night. (Have them give a personal testimony of how Scouting has benefitted their family.)
- Make sure you have posters of Scouts in action; in your school, church and other places that will give parents info on when they can sign up.
- Develop an incentive for Peer-to-Peer recruiting.
- Have an impressive presence at Meet the Teacher & Open House. (Tents, Flag ceremony, Cub Scout greeters, interactive booth...)
- The day before and the day of your School Night, see if the school will allow Cub Scouts in uniform to welcome parents and students in the drop off line.
- Make sure all your Cub Scouts proudly wear their uniforms the day of your School Night.
- Make sure Leaders & Cub Scouts are at your School Night ready to welcome new families.
- Have an organized School Night. First impressions are crucial.
- Make sure you have a Pack calendar to give to the new families.
- Assemble a team that can make reminder calls to all new Cub Scouts to insure they attend their first meeting.
If you start on the list early, you'll be able to hit all key items by your School night Sign-up.
With you helping with the 2012 Recruitment Campaign, we will get more new kids in ScoUting!!

New Unit Blitz
Our New Unit Blitz campaign is off to a quick start, as we have commitments from over 50 Chartered Organizations to start new units! New unit growth is a key component to growing Scouting throughout Central Florida. With engaged commissioner service to our new units we believe we can offer great service to our units and community and help reach more youth. Does the church you belong to have a scouting unit at it? Many of our best prospects for Chartered Organizations are places that we are already a part of outside of Scouting. If you have places you would like to see Scouting, let us know so we can work together to serve more youth and help create the leaders of tomorrow. Contact Randy Steil to find out more on how to start a new unit.

Have you signed up for Cub Scout Day Camp?
Scouts Salute Our Heroes, is fast approaching and the excitement is building. There are so many different crafts that have been ordered and are being readied for the boys to build. We have seen wooden aircraft carriers, walking sticks, catapults, jets and more. We have seen leather crafts from sheriffs stars to flags, we have seen painting crafts and beading crafts, who knows what is planned for your son at camp. Sign up for a camp or two and see what crafts he will do!
Besides crafts shooting sports have been planned some bb gun shooting and some archery too, the range officers are there to help teach the boys how to take aim and hit the target, after practicing all week at camp they are sure to come home with a couple of bulls eyes.
What more can be done at camp? Well the fun has just begun! How about some guest speakers to share in the fun? Maybe the police department, or the fire department, or a military vehicle - who knows who from the community is coming to the camp near you but whoever it is they are sure to be fun and teach us lots of super cool things. Still more fun has been planned for you and your son. We will teach them some scout skills, maybe he'll learn to build a fire, cook, take a hike or even use a compass. No matter what skill your camp will teach your son he is sure to come home and share it with you.
These are some of the things in store for you and your son at Cub Scout Day Camp, the fun and learning cannot be beat, so move your feet and sign up today for the camp that is down your way. While you are at it go ahead and make it two!!!! Sign up at CFLscouting.org under camping and activities. For questions contact Sally at 321-720-4109.

New Service Project Guidelines
One of the most frequently asked questions that our Health and Safety Team receives concerns service projects. Specifically, which tools and jobs are appropriate for youth on a project site, and which are appropriate for adult leaders? To help shed a little light on this topic, the BSA recently published service project guidelines and age guidelines for tool use and work at elevations and excavations:
As with our revised and new merit badges that may involve the use of dangerous equipment (such as Welding Merit Badge, for example), the use of a risk-based approach is important. This calls for discussion of the risk or hazards associated with the activity, and how to prevent, mitigate, or address those risks.

National Youth Leadership Training
National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is a leadership course for Boy Scouts who have achieved the rank of First Class and are thirteen (13) years old by the start of NYLT and Venture Crew members who have completed VLSC and are fourteen (14) years old by the start of NYLT. The staff of NYLT is happy to announce that registration for the summer course is now open. The course will run from noon on Sunday, July 29, 2012 to early evening on August 3, 2012, at Camp LaNoChe, Paisley, FL. The cost is $195 and includes all supplies and food. We can only accommodate 96 youth, so please register early! You may register online at Camping & Activities on the Central Florida Council web site, or contact Michael Burton (321-360-2659) or Marilyn McAndrew (321-243-9138). NYLT is NOT summer camp! The participants are busy with activities all day! Some of the activities in the schedule include Geo caching, pioneering projects, games, swimming, and of course class room sessions! The participants are grouped into teams and will participant as a member of their team. This is a boy lead program, sessions and activities are led by youth; there is very little adult participation. The adult staff is there as support and oversight - the youth are responsible for the program and we have an awesome youth staff! This is a life altering experience! The participants will grow in confidence and learn firsthand leadership skills. Some adults have called this Wood Badge Light - it's a mountain top experience! The staff hopes you will make the decision to attend the summer session of NYLT.

Annual Council Recognition Banquet
If there is one night that our Central Florida Council shines the brightest, it has to be at the Annual Recognition Banquet. Some of our past speakers include Astronaut and Senator John Glenn, Orlando Magic Vice President of Operations Pat Williams, Aerospace Pioneer and Legend Joe Kittenger, and BSA Chief Scout Executive Robert Mazzucca. Our speaker's message always includes the importance of Scouting to our country and the role it played in their lives. This year, returning for his second year in a row, is our own Giovanni, who will once again share a meaningful message while entertaining us with his magic and making us laugh at his antics. Although the message of our speaker is always motivating what gets me excited the most is the Eagle Scouts we recognize and the presentation of our newest Silver Beaver recipients. This year, our council sets another record for the number of young men who have earn Scouting's highest rank the Eagle. There were 393 in the year of 2011 and a majority of them will be present at the banquet. The Silver Beaver is the highest honor our council can give to our volunteers and a dozen or so will be awarded at the banquet. If you haven't been to the banquet before, you are missing a fantastic evening and a terrific value. The current price is $25 per person for the pre dinner reception and the dinner. Our host will once again be the fabulous Buena Vista Palace Resort and Spa. A special thanks to General Manager Greg Hauenstein and his staff for their continued generosity. A special overnight package is also available and I recommend it highly. So put June 15th on your calendar NOW, make your reservations NOW, online through the council. Last year was a sell out with over 1,000 of your fellow scouts and Scouters in attendance. DON'T DELAY, DO IT TODAY!!!!!!! See You There. Yours in Scouting, Floyd White 2012 Recognition Banquet Chair

A Fond Farewell
This is to announce the retirement of Eva Shoemaker, whose career has spanned more than 20 years of employment with the Central Florida Council, BSA. Eva's initial association with the Boy Scouts was when her son joined as a Wolf Cub (before the Tiger program existed). As her son moved up in the program she tagged along, eventually serving as a volunteer commissioner during summer camp at Camp La-No-Che in the summer of 1990. This fortunately led to her being accepted as the first Program Services Administrator for Central Florida Council, a position created by our newest Chief Scout Executive, Wayne Brock. She feels a special kinship with Wayne because they share the same employee start date at our council. Eva served in the position of Program Services Administrator from 1991 until she seized the opportunity to become a Learning for Life Executive in 2004. Her dedication to the program has been recognized at the National level earning her several awards. Under her guidance, several unique programs have been instituted to further enhance the level of commitment to character education provided by the Learning for Life program. In addition to her duties as a Senior Learning for Life Executive she has had the responsibility of providing support for all phases of Advancement for the past several years. Eva was the first woman to serve as Staff Advisor for Tipisa Lodge, a responsibility held by few professional females throughout the nation. In 1996 Eva was honored as the third female recipient of the Vigil Honor in Tipisa Lodge history and received the Founders Award in 2010 for her dedication to the Order. Eva will be missed on many levels but we wish her all the best and good health as she moves into the next phase of her life. As she states, "I am ready to Reinvent myself".

What's Going Around: SINUSITIS
If it seems like your cold just won't go away, and now the runny nose and cough are accompanied by facial pain and tenderness, you may have What's Going Around - Sinusitis, a bacterial infection of the sinuses.
Learn More:
Viral sinusitis is present with all colds, but a doctor's diagnosis of sinusitis typically refers to that caused by a bacterial infection. Sinusitis occurs when one or more of the nasal passages are unable to drain due to inflammation. Many of the other symptoms of sinusitis mimic the common cold. In fact, sinusitis often starts as a cold, but the common cold typically runs its course in about a week. Sinusitis, on the other hand, can last weeks or months if left untreated. Symptoms:
- Pressure/Pain in the Head and Pain or Tenderness of the Face (may intensify when you lean over)
- Nasal Congestion
- Coughing
- Fever
- Sore Throat
- Nasal Discharge
- Postnasal Drip
Sinusitis itself is rarely contagious, but the cold symptoms that precede it can be easily spread from person to person. If your sinusitis is bacterial in nature, your doctor will likely prescribe an antibiotic to shorten its duration. Symptoms may also be treated with over-the-counter medications to alleviate pain, fever and congestion. A humidifier or nasal saline mist and drinking plenty of fluids can be helpful to thin the mucus.
The following can help to prevent sinusitis: - Wash/sanitize your hands often
- Avoid people who have colds or other upper respiratory infections
- Use a humidifier to increase moisture
- Avoid pollutants such as smoke
- Get a flu vaccination
- Treat the symptoms of an upper respiratory infection quickly, so they don't get worse

From the Scout Executive
During my twenty-nine year Scouting career, one of my greatest pleasures has been the opportunity to meet and work with many incredible people from all walks of life. In Central Florida we are blessed by the service of more than 9,000 adult volunteers. From time to time a Scouter will emerge who touches your heart and be embedded in your memory forever. Permit me to share the story of one such Scouter.
For more than 65 years, Mike Harmon has dedicated his life to Scouting. Along his Scouting trail Mike has virtually held every Scouting position where he has mentored an immeasurable number Scouts on their Scouting journey. While much has changed in those 65 years, one constant has been Mike's passion and extraordinary service to the Daytona Beach community regardless of the challenge or adverse conditions.
Recently, Mike was diagnosed with lung cancer metastasized to the liver, a terminal cancer condition. In spite of this diagnosis he has continued his relentless drive to serve Scouting. This past spring, Mike informed the Council that he would like to enroll in Wood Badge, Scouting's Advanced Leadership Training course, which encompasses six full days of intense leadership training. Completing the Wood Badge course was always a goal for Mike to improve his skills to mentor Scouts and he was not going to permit anything that would deter him from his goal.
How many of us upon learning of a critical health diagnosis would choose focus our attention on improving our Scouting skills? Those who have completed Wood Badge know the shear dedication necessary to complete the course and earn your beads. After completing the six days of intense leadership training a Wood Badge candidate must write long term goals and an action plan to advance Scouting through your current role as a Scout leader. It was astonishing to me that Mike chose to delay his treatment in order to complete the leadership-training and Wood Badge "Ticket."
On May 11th, I was honored to join Spring Wood Badge Course Director, John Jennings and over 225 Scouters and community leaders at the District Banquet in Ormond Beach to award Mike Harmon his beads and certificate for his completion of Wood Badge course S4-83-12-1. Having the privilege to take part in Mike's "beading" ceremony was one of the most personal rewarding experiences in my entire professional Scouting career. It is because of Scouters like Mike that the Boy Scouts of America has endured for more than a century. As summer approaches, many of you will take personal vacation time to accompany your Troop to Camp La-No-Che for a week summer camp or your Cub Pack to day camp. I would like express my deep gratitude to all adult leaders for what you do for Scouting. Your dedication and commitment will pay untold dividends through the lives of young people you serve.
Yours in Scouting,
- Ron Oats, Scout Executive
