New Trainer Doubles as Entrepreneur
Andrea Obey is putting her name to good use. Now a Junior Trainer for AnimalSense, Andrea also recently started her own business: Sit. Walk. Obey. which focuses on in-home pet care for animals who may have special medical or behavioral needs. Andrea is certified in pet CPR and first aid, a certified dog walker with dog*tec, works at an animal hospital as a vet assistant and client care representative, and is working toward earning her CPDT certification.
Dog training runs in her family. Her cousin, dog trainer Kelly Gorman Dunbar and her husband, Dr. Ian Dunbar definitely had an influence on Andrea's path with animals. "Kelly and Ian played a large part by opening up a whole world of science-based training and also working at the zoo. I think I was amazed at watching one of my dogs turn around behaviorally by using more of Ian's methods and then also using a lot of those positive reinforcement methods at the zoo with wildlife," said Andrea.
However, the decision to become a dog trainer didn't happen immediately. "It was more of a process for me. I never had the "a-ha!" moment everyone talks about. It was after years of working with animals," said Andrea. A graduate of AnimalSense Academy (now CanineLink), Andrea is excited to gain even more experience with dogs as a trainer. When she talks shop with her cousin, she presents a case, her assessment and see if Kelly agrees. "Thankfully so far, she mostly has," says Andrea.
