CMA PRESIDENT TELLS PBS NEWS HOUR "KEEP COAL IN THE ENERGY MIX"

In a nationally televised interview August 8, CMA President Stuart Sanderson told Public Broadcasting System (PBS) news anchor Ray Suarez  that "it would be a shame to remove coal from the energy mix.  Number one, it's our most abundant energy fuel."  Paraphrasing Sanderson's remarks, Suarez noted, "not only is much of the world's coal in the United States, the natural gas industry has exaggerated the environmental advantages of natural gas, for one, without mentioning frequent spikes and drops in price."  "Coal also accounts for much lower rates for energy consumers and, in fact, our data shows that the price of natural gas is double that of coal, and with much more volatility," Sanderson said.

Although anti-mining activists bemoaned the use of natural gas as well (what were they thinking when they supported House Bill 1365?!) CMA and its supporters at Tri-State Generation & Transmission had the final say, as spokesman Lee Boughey said, "we can't take the coal option off the table," a fact which Suarez acknowledged in concluding " so much American electricity comes from coal, the country won't have a way of doing without it any time soon."

CLIMAX MOLYBDENUM COMPANY RE-0PENING CEREMONY

Fred Menzer, VP Colorado Operations, Climax Molybdenum Company, MC's the Re-Opening Ceremony at the Copper Mountain Convention Center.

Nearly 500 gathered at the Copper Mountain Conference Center to celebrate the reopening of the iconic Climax Mine on Wednesday, Aug. 8th.   And they were treated to Bluegrass music (I loved the Grateful Dead renditions!), terrific food and drink, and a tour of one of America's most famous mining operations.   Molybdenum was first discovered in the late 1800s, and the Climax mine started operations in 1917, accounting for more than 2 billion pounds of production.   The mine had been idle since 1982, except for a brief reopening in 1995.

Richard Adkerson, CEO of Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold, said the mine was dedicated to environmental stewardship and to serving and supporting the surrounding communities.     With an investment exceeding $700 million, the mine and mill will employ about 400 workers directly.
