As always, use the links on the left or simply scroll down the page to see what has been and what will be going on with AIA Arkansas. If you have news you would like to share that meets the submission guidelines, please submit it to Joie Ketcham.  The next deadline is October 15th. ENJOY!

2012 AIA Arkansas State Convention

The convention festivities begin today at the Hot Springs Country Club with the Golf Tournament and Bikitecture Tour.  We will begin by having lunch together with cyclists, golfers and sponsors. After lunch, the cyclists will

2012 Convention Logo

begin their tour of Hot Springs while the golfers and tournament sponsors enjoy a round of golf.

Continuing education will kick off Thursday morning at 9:00am. We have another great lineup of breakout sessions and featured speakers and look forward to having you as our guest in Hot Springs!

Food and drinks will be provided during breaks. All breaks, as well as Friday's lunch, will be held in the Expo Hall.

NOTE: Please remember to wear your name badge at all times during the convention.  This will allow you to attend any of the continuing education sessions or convention social events.

This convention would not be possible without the financial support of our ALLIED MEMBERS.  You will notice in your program, as well as on signs as you enter the event, that most of the events have Gold Sponsors or Silver Co-Sponsors.  We would like to say a very special "thank you" to them and all of our Allied Members for their continued support.

Recording Attendance:

We are pleased to announce that you will now have the capability of scanning into each session that you attend.  You will still have a continuing education tracking sheet in your packet.  Each class that you scan into should be recorded on this paper and turned in prior to leaving the convention.  Your member number will be on your badge for convenience in filling out this form.

Walking Tour (Garvan Woodland Gardens):

The walking tour is open to all convention registrants.  You will need to be sure to sign in at the admissions desk to receive credit for the tour. Bring your convention badge and receive half off admission.  Be sure to sign in by Saturday at noon to receive credit.

After Party Friday Night:

We will have Best Little Rock DJ back with us this year so bring your dancing shoes.  The bar will be sponsored in part by Kinco Constructors.  After their sponsored dollar amount is reached the bar will become a cash bar, so be sure to bring some cash with you to the banquet.

Win A Ben!

Last year we implemented the "Win a Ben" ($100) drawing.  It's simple; all you have to do is vote for your choice on the Members' Choice Design Award.  When you turn in your vote, you will receive a door prize ticket.  If your ticket is drawn, you win $100.  It's just that easy, so don't forget to vote!

Silent Auction:

We will continue with the popular Silent Auction again this year.  Remember to visit each Allied Member about their products and collect your Barksdale Bucks.  You may begin collecting money at the Welcome Reception Thursday evening, continuing through Friday at 2:00pm (the actual bidding occurs between 1:00pm and 2:00pm).

  • An envelope has been placed in your registration packet to house the money that you collect.  The maximum amount of money you can collect is $83.  Please turn in all that you have collected at the close of lunch on Friday.  The money will be counted for accuracy (no duplicates) and winners will be announced at the 3:00pm break on Friday in the Expo Hall.  You must be present to win.

Please have fun with the silent auction program, it is intended to get you to interact and have fun with our Allied Members whose support is vital to the health of our organization.

Door Prizes:

AIA Arkansas will continue with the bingo card for a chance to win the AIA Arkansas door prize.  Those participants who collect the initials of every Allied Member on their card will be eligible to enter the drawing.

Art Contest:

We're excited to continue the Architect as Artist competition this year.  Judging will take place Friday afternoon and your work MUST be picked up by 6:00pm Friday evening.  Awards will be presented at the Design Awards Banquet Friday night.

REPOSITIONING THE AIA

In addition to our usual convention offerings, we wanted to let you know that AIA national is sending Jane Kolleeny, AIA's repositioning consultant to our annual convention to interview you on behalf of the repositioning project (http://www.aia.org/practicing/AIAB094878f).  Among the most important initiatives AIA has undertaken in its history, this year-long process will explore the perceptions, beliefs, attitudes, needs, and value of architects to facilitate a comprehensive plan geared towards advancing the position of architects and bolstering the national dialogue about their role in society.

Begun in March 2012, the design and marketing firm Pentagram and the cultural institution and association consultant LaPlaca Cohen have been hired to help with the effort. Their findings will offer a new way to communicate about architecture and the AIA's role within the profession. Once this message is synthesized, the two firms will investigate what communications channels would best serve to disseminate these messages to target audiences. Their findings will be announced at the 2013 AIA Grassroots conference.

Stay alert to announcements about connecting with Jane, who is eager to speak to you and get your thoughts on how AIA can move successfully into the future. Check out the landing page on the repositioning at www.aia.org/repositioning.

National Conference Oct 4-5, 2012:

"The Restoration of our Rivers"

Held at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas

There will be a National Conference on the "Restoration of Our Rivers" on October 4 and 5, 2012, at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. On behalf of our national and statewide sponsors for this important conference, I am especially pleased to encourage the members of the Arkansas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects to attend this timely and relevant conference on urban stormwater and the restoration of our rivers. As you know, Moshe Safdie collaborated with Alice Walton on the Crystal Bridges Museum; a magical and innovative wonder of architecture that I am certain many of your AIA members would enjoy visiting in addition to attending the technical program.

Attached is a brochure that fully describes the details of the conference. At your earliest convenience, please notify the members of the Arkansas Chapter of AIA regarding the registration and conference program.

BE SURE TO STOP BY THE EXPO HALL TO SEE THE ALLIED MEMBERS!
