Greetings from Ireland

Greetings!

Summer has arrived here on the Wet Coast and with it the kind of weather that most Vancouverites yearn for. Now I say most because those of us who were born and raised here can't go long without rain.

For me therefore, it has been a perfect month. A few days of sun and a few days of rain. Our little herd seems to prefer the longer dry spells however the moisture keeps the pastures green and growing. I'm not sure they appreciate the connection although I sure notice my  creativity drying up with the land.  But... today there is rain and with it, cooler breezes and much to share so let's begin...

Messages From the Herd:

With the back and forth between sun and rain, we've had an unusual number of thunder storms. I love watching as the lightening ignites our valley. The horses seem awakened by the extra charge in the air and Chiron in particular seems to enjoy thunder dancing, a term I give to the unique choreography he performs only after storms.

Chiron's Thunder Dance
Chiron's Thunder Dance

With hooves striking the ground like Thor's hammer, Chiron gallops and leaps, creating his own resonating boom as hoof meets earth.  Not be be outdone, Xen joins the dance and Grace... well she grazes demurely amidst the galloping storm of black and grey.

I watch the dance and feel a palpable release of energy as Chiron and Xen buck and run, a reminder that motion creates emotion and releases it as well.  I reflect on the areas of my life that could use a burst of energy and once identified, begin to walk about the pasture, envisioning the actions required to achieve my goals.

As I walk I also watch Grace, steady and grounded as the field around her churns with maximum entropy. She is so calm and still, so powerful in her own right yet in contrast to the thunder.  I remember an art card I found years ago which said "Serenity is not finding calm from the storm, but finding peace within it." So I stop beside Grace to share her serenity.

Eventually, Chiron and Xen join us. We go back to grazing and find a new equilibrium...with the horses showing me how to channel the energy of the storm and find the peace within in it.

What's New?

Chiron's Way Graduates Sharolyn Wandzura and Carla Webb have been in the local spotlight this year for their much needed and acclaimed Empowered By Horses Programs which feature Heart Centered Leadership for Girls.

Sharolyn and Carla are the cream of the crop and I can't recommend their programs highly enough.  As a mom of 14 and 15 year old girls, and a school counsellor and teacher, I know firsthand the importance of empowering our young girls and this program does so in a way that is heart centered, powerful and FUN - with horses!

Their next horse camp is Aug 27-31, just in time to help your girls and girls you know get off to a great start this school year.

Magic Hoof School - turning children into authors

Written by Marcy Kikegawa, my friend, fellow teacher and horse lover comes a unique and adorable children's book designed to inspire children to write and become authors themselves.

I was blessed to meet Flutter when he was just a day old and remember the utter joy on Marcy's face as she watched him bounce around the pasture.

1 day old Flutter with his mom, Aspen.

Marcy has kindly offered a free pdf version of Magic Hoof School to all Chiron's Way readers.   Click here: http://bit.ly/LGIgiy   and use the password free to get your free copy.

Poetry and Horses

I love writing with my horses and often include creative writing activities in my equine guided workshops.  This writing often takes form as poetry or prose and below is a Grace inspired poem by writer and horse lover, Maureen Littler in her collection entitled     The Ride: a journey from selfish to selfless.

Grace

A horse with a message

A horse with a goal

Transforming all beings

Who seek a new soul

She's gentle and soft

When needed to be

But often will challenge

So you're able to see

Not with your eyes

Not with your heart

It goes deeper than that

It's your soul that imparts

What needs to be changed

What needs to be seen

In order to grow

As a full human being

Being seen by Grace
