ummer is winding down although we are still VERY busy at the Library. So far this year almost 2000 MORE people have visited the Library than during the same period as last year. A lot of this has to do with the large number of people coming to the cultural programs (for instance, 832 for our nine programs in July, and 687 for our six programs in August), but we also have patrons flocking in to use our lightning-fast fiber-optic Internet connection (see photo above), and to check out books, read newspapers, study Italian, or take a cool nap in one of the big chairs on a hot afternoon.
e anticipate heavy usage of our new TRAVEL NOOK, the corner in the Reference Room containing travel books and maps and other resources. I am rather thrilled that the librarians decided to move the travel books out of the main collection and create this dedicated space because 1) this is a travel-addicted community and 2) I believe that reading books and traveling introduce us, in profound ways, to the "other." I further believe that when we learn that the "other" is a lot like us, we develop a greater tolerance for diversity. Finally, I believe that a greater tolerance for diversity is a positive force for good on this planet. Go LIBRARIES!
nd talking about the Travel Nook, the librarians here, led by Deputy Director Kerry Bozza, entered the Travel Nook in a national contest AND WE ARE AMONG THE TOP FIVE FINALISTS!!! We are hoping you will vote for us, as the winner will be chosen strictly on the basis of Facebook votes (we are up against Baltimore!!!) Here's how you vote (thank you in advance!):
1. Visit Wiley Library Team Facebook page.
2. Press the "Like" button to the right of "Wiley Library Team."
3. Scroll down to the yellow taxicab photograph (find Finalist #3) and click "Like."
Until October,
Colleen Daly
