Can Your Lawn Take the Heat?

Summer will be here soon, and it can be brutal on your lawn. But summer hardiness can be improved this year and in the years ahead.

Here are some things to think about through the rest of the growing season:

Mowing.

As temperatures increase, you should gradually raise your mowing height by25% to 50%. Also, you should remove no more than one third of the grass blade at a time. This will keep the soil shaded and encourage deeper roots.

When summer heat starts to subside, you can gradually lower the mowing height again.

Watering.

Water your lawn deeply and infrequently, since light, frequent waterings encourage shallow roots that can't sustain grass plants.

Your lawn needs from 1" to 1 and half  inch of water per week from rainfall or sprinkling, and you should soak the soil to a depth of 6" each time. Early morning is the best time to water.

Core Aeration and Fertilization in the Fall.

Core aeration opens up the soil, breaks up thatch and improves the flow of air, water and nutrients to the roots. By having your lawn fertilized after aeration, your turf will be less susceptible to disease while exhibiting improved recovery from the stresses of summer heat and drought.

Fall fertilization will also lead to fewer summer weed problems and better fall-to-spring color.

Dear Saunders Landscape Supply Clients,

Seventeen years ago, I left my position as Vice-President of consumer lending with Dominion Bank. I  had a vision and wanted to create a landscape supply business that not only made available a large range of products that appeal to a wide range of people, I also wanted to create the ability for  the local homeowner to become inspired and to create their landscaping projects. My desire was to provide a service that would allow the homeowner to have product delivered to their home, instead of multi trips in the trunk of the car, while delivering a quality product and excellent customer service.  Saunders Landscape Supply celebrates its seventeenth year of service. I want to personally thank each one of my clients for their continued loyalty!

I have personally created a survey in this newsletter and asked that you give me feedback concerning your personal experience with Saunders Landscape Supply. I thank you in advance for taking time to complete our survey.

If there is a product that we currently do not offer that you have a need for, please feel free to contact me directly or send me an email at Don@SaundersLS.com.

If you have a project that you have successful completed and would like us to showcase your project in our newsletter, please let our marketing department know by sending your photos to Marketing@Saundersls.com

We are delighted to serve you and value your business!

                    ADVISORY

  • Replenish mulches to smother weeds and to stretch the needed time between waterings!
  • Refreshing your mulch in June helps maintain a more uniform soil temperature thus reducing plant stress
  • To reduce weeds- make sure your mulch is at least 3 inches. Mulching your flower and vegetable beds will drastically reduce the amount of time spent weeding, watering and fighting pests.
  • Mulch also improves the appearance of your garden, and keep dirt from splashing up on your flowers and vegetables when it rains.

 Gardening Aerobics BEE WITH MUSCLES

Forget that expensive health club membership- all the benefits of a first-rate physical workout can be achieved while you garden! Here's the good news studies have found:

The poetic version is..."It is like power-walking to the supermarket... and receiving a 90% discount on fresh vegetables; It's like cycling for ten miles and returning to fresh garden spinach, lettuce, radishes and tomatoes every time. It's like jogging around the block to return to fresh corn, peppers and eggplant.

The exercise benefits are both plentiful and obvious. Moderate aerobic exercise from :

  1. Weeding
  2. Hoeing
  3. Raking
  4. Digging
  5. Bending and kneeling (properly!)
  6. Walking
  7. Mowing
  8. Pruning
  9. Cultivating, mulching and adding organic topsoil to our gardens

However, one must:

  1. Stretch and warm-up before you garden.
  2. Quit when you are tired and don't over-exert!
  3. Bend from the knees and not the back!
  4. Alternate gardening movements and position often.
  5. Follow the  rules of exercise while you  Get Fit Through Gardening.

Also the fact that gardening is fun and enjoyable makes getting fit through gardening different from other activities like walking, running and exercise machines which can be boring and monotonous for many people!

Don't forget to add a nice comfortable chair to relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor!

Happy Gardening !

 gravel edging

Using Gravel for Edging

1.Create your design; you can lay it out with a garden hose or spray paint.

2.Determine how deep you will need your trench to be. Keep in mind the depth of your edging material and the depth of any base material used. Saunders offers an online calulator so you can calculate how much you need. Just measure your length times the width and enter into the calculator at http://www.saundersls.com/sand

3. Excavate trench removing any rocks or roots that may cause leveling problems.

4.You can either lay your edging straight into the trench with out a leveling material or on a 1" or less of coarse sand for leveling ease. Go to http://www.saundersls.com/sand to calculate how much you need and order online 24/7.

4.Place edging material into trench leveling side-to-side and front to back as best as you can. (Natural stone will typically not be perfectly level.)

5.Continue laying until all of your edging is installed. If cuts are necessary you can cut the stone edging with a skill saw or chop saw equipped with a concrete/natural stone diamond blade or you can score (make a shallow cut with saw) and snap the waste stone off with a chisel and hammer. You could rent a hydraulic splitter or a diamond blade (typically rent these at a neighborhood equipment rental company). Using the splitter or chisel and hammer will leave you with a more natural split face vs. the saws will leave you with a smooth finish.
