Can Your Lawn Take the Heat?
Summer will be here soon, and it can be brutal on your lawn. But summer hardiness can be improved this year and in the years ahead. Here are some things to think about through the rest of the growing season:
Mowing.
As temperatures increase, you should gradually raise your mowing height by25% to 50%. Also, you should remove no more than one third of the grass blade at a time. This will keep the soil shaded and encourage deeper roots.
When summer heat starts to subside, you can gradually lower the mowing height again.
Watering.
Water your lawn deeply and infrequently, since light, frequent waterings encourage shallow roots that can't sustain grass plants.
Your lawn needs from 1" to 1 and half inch of water per week from rainfall or sprinkling, and you should soak the soil to a depth of 6" each time. Early morning is the best time to water.
Core Aeration and Fertilization in the Fall.
Core aeration opens up the soil, breaks up thatch and improves the flow of air, water and nutrients to the roots. By having your lawn fertilized after aeration, your turf will be less susceptible to disease while exhibiting improved recovery from the stresses of summer heat and drought.
Fall fertilization will also lead to fewer summer weed problems and better fall-to-spring color. Contact Saunders to schedule our 5 step process.

  Bratty Broadleaves Back Again
Warmer spring weather signals broadleaf weed seeds that it's time to start growing. Andwhen you consider that just one dandelion seedhead has more than 200 fluffy seeds, especially designed to be carried long distances by the wind, chances are that youhave a lot of weed seeds getting ready to grow in your lawn. They're Tough, But They Can Be Stopped! Most broadleaf weeds are extremely hardy. For example, thedandelion can have roots up to 5' long, making it very tough to completely remove. But these persistent weeds can be preventedfrom overtaking and ruining your lawn. Broadleaf weeds must be treated as they're growing, so postemergent controls should be applied to your lawn as soon as the weeds become visible. Once applied, post-emergent controls are absorbed through the leaves of the weeds. They then work their waydown to the roots. Within a few days, the leaves start to curl, and theweeds aren't nearly as visible. It can take several weeks for broadleaf weeds to disappearcompletely, and new weeds can (and probably will) pop up afterthe initial post-emergent application. If so, subsequent treatments will keep them under control. Doing Your PartThe best way to control broadleaf weeds is to grow a dense stand of grassthat can outcompete weed invaders, so it's important to have your lawn fertilized regularly. Saunders Landscape offers a 5 step process to assist you with the care of your lawn. You can help too by ensuring that your lawn gets enough water and mowing properly! We offer a 5 step process for a beautiful lawn. Contact us early this spring to start! Saundersls.com or email Marketing@Saundersls.com Don Saunders, President of Saunders |
Gardening Aerobics
Forget that expensive health club membership- all the benefits of a first-rate physical workout can be achieved while you garden! Here's the good news studies have found:
Just 45 minutes of varied gardening each day can burn more than 1,000 calories per hour, while lowering risks of a heart attack by up to one-third. So don't hire someone to put down the mulch and top soil- burn calories while doing it!
Gardening also provides proven psychological benefits, gets us outdoors into the fresh air, and encourages better nutrition from fresh vegetables and fruits harvested from home gardens.
To get the maximum aerobic benefit from gardening, you may need to change some gardening habits to follow the rhythm of aerobic exercise.
Begin by stretching, followed by light weeding, then working up to 10-15 minutes of strenuous jobs like turning compost, (http://www.saundersls.com/topsoil) before cooling down with a slower activity. Your goal should be to work for 30 minutes to 2 hours at a time instead of finishing the project.
Begin slowly if you've taken a break from gardening in the last several months. Gradually build up the time spent gardening, and always stretch before, during, and after gardening. Remember to
move carefully, using leg muscles to lift heavy objects. When bending over, pull in stomach muscles and keep knees unlocked.

GRAVEL EDGING

Using Gravel for Edging
- 1.Create your design; you can lay it out with a garden hose or spray paint.
-
2.Determine how deep you will need your trench to be. Keep in mind the depth of your edging material and the depth of any base material used. Saunders offers an online calulator so you can calculate how much you need. Just measure your length times the width and enter into the calculator at http://www.saundersls.com/sand
3. Excavate trench removing any rocks or roots that may cause leveling problems.
4.You can either lay your edging straight into the trench with out a leveling material or on a 1" or less of coarse sand for leveling ease. Go to http://www.saundersls.com/sand to calculate how much you need and order online 24/7.
4.Place edging material into trench leveling side-to-side and front to back as best as you can. (Natural stone will typically not be perfectly level.)
5.Continue laying until all of your edging is installed. If cuts are necessary you can cut the stone edging with a skill saw or chop saw equipped with a concrete/natural stone diamond blade or you can score (make a shallow cut with saw) and snap the waste stone off with a chisel and hammer. You could rent a hydraulic splitter or a diamond blade (typically rent these at a neighborhood equipment rental company). Using the splitter or chisel and hammer will leave you with a more natural split face vs. the saws will leave you with a smooth finish.
