New Huntsville City Schools Superintendent Gets Down to Business
|
Welcome, Dr. Casey Wardynski, the new superintendent of Huntsville City Schools, to Huntsville. Dr. Wardynski is a graduate of the Broad Superintendents Academy, a program that identifies and prepares prominent leaders - executives who have experience successfully leading large organizations and a passion for public service - then places them in urban school districts to dramatically improve the quality of education for America's students.
While Dr. Wardynski's official start date with Huntsville City Schools was July 5, 2011, he has been working all summer to organize staff and meet community and school system members. In his first few weeks of official business, he has already hired new principals and has begun the task of returning the school system to a financially stable state. He has a 60 Day Entry Plan which can be viewed here. |

Huntsville's Redistricting Plan in Process of Input and Revision
Because recent U.S. Census data has indicated an increase in Huntsville's population by 21,847 residents, Huntsville is required to redraw its council and school board election lines. This task has fallen on Mayor Tommy Battle, and very few council members seem very happy with his proposal. Some of the changes include:
- A large chunk of northwest Huntsville stretching from University Drive north to Springfield Road would move from District 5 to District 1.
- District 2 would gain neighborhoods around Alabama A&M University but lose parts of Blossomwood, Twickenham and Old Town.
- District 4, wich cuts across the center of Huntsville from the U.S. Space and Rocket Center to Hampton Cove, would increase significantly.
- Grissom High School and the surrounding neighborhoods would be put in District 3. ("Huntsville City Council Not Happy With Mayor's Redistricting Plan", Huntsville Times, June 17, 2011)
Mayor Battle admits that the current plan is only a starting point, and he continues to provide the opportunity for public input. Several town meetings have been organized to introduce the plan to the public and ask for input on what is positive about the plan and what changes need to be made. At a recent meeting held at Grissom High School, City Councilman John Olshefski commented, "I'll say one thing about it, it's fair." ("New Huntsville Superintendent, State Legislators Field Questions at Town Hall Meeting" Huntsville Times, July 12, 2011)
A map of the current district plan and the latest proposed changes can be found here. The next city-wide public meeting to discuss redistricting will be on August 4, 2011 at 6 pm at 308 Fountain Circle SW. | | |

Once upon a time in the day of modern 747s, a very average gal of very average height traveled 24 hours halfway around the world to see what she could see. She landed in Seoul, South Korea, not by chance, naturally, but by design of her composer husband, Don Bowyer.
She was a minority in Seoul, Korea -- taller than most of the men; taller than 99% of the women. She gazed at a graceful and gracious culture, with people who work hard, who value extended family, and who make sure their children are among the 80% of the population who go to college. She watched hundreds of people walk by, and only a rare few were overweight, for the Korean diet is filled with healthy choices. (South Korea's government ponders high-brow thinking such as considering a tax on junk food.) She saw not a homeless person the entire trip, although research shows there are a few thousand among Seoul's 10 million people.
She returned home to ten times more homeless than in South Korea. She returned home to families whose interest in education is minimal and to school lunches that are fried and filled with carbs.
She researched recipes for kimchi. |
