Time To Reflect

It is always satisfying to review many months work and receive positive feedback on specific  sessions and the overall PMA Conference:

Feedback

"Thanks again to everyone for one of the best DIMA days in years"....John Swainston

"An excellent session only made possible by the outstanding panel and deep engagement with our industry". .....Chris Wilkinson

and.. "It was a great show and we have been overwhelmed with feedback on the presentation".

"Great job by Chris and Paul, totally agree with John, an excellent and relevant session". ....  Phil Gresham

"Thankyou for allowing me to be a part of a great session. The format worked really well and hopefully we shared some valuable insights with the audience"....Nic Peasley

"To the Terrific Trio of PMA Oz . . . Hats off to you three . . . The conditions under which you pulled off an outstanding event were amazing . . . just amazing . . . a tribute to your dedication and professionalism" . . . Bill McCurry

Registrations.

Final registrations exceeded 300 which was pleasing, as it was similar to Sydney last year and was even a better result when it was clear there would be a drop in the number of exhibitors.

Association activities.

AGM's were held for PPFA,PIEA,PMA,APCI and PSPA as well as concurrent conferences for all of these associations. Congratulations to all new elected officers for these associations. The School Photographers had a night out at The Comedy Club which Paul Dawson reported as a great success. The group from APCI held a dinner on Saturday evening which Paul Atkins arranged. Again another "big" night!

Special thanks.

Having our International President Allen Showalter, Jim Esp and their wives attending the Conference, again indicated the importance of the Australian PMA to the overall association. It was good to hear of the plans in place for future growth activities in the USA which will in turn benefit our operations. As in Australia, the recognition that "growing the imaging market" is very much centred around educating the end user. That will assist our members in reaching our overall objective of making more local sales.

My personal thanks, to your team in Kathy Warlum, John Bourne and Suzi Barger who made it all happen, and to our National Chairperson Phil  Gresham who has been very supportive throughout.

Allen Logue also deserves our thanks for all the effort he put in to Hot Picks.

Now onto Future Leaders and our Educational Roadshows being held late next month.

PSPA Conference Wraps Up In Good Shape.

The Professional School Photographers Association had a fantastic day of seminars at The Digital Conference in Melbourne on Saturday 26th May. They attracted over 60 enthusiastic PMA/PSPA members from Australia and New Zealand.

The morning sessions consisted of David Good from MSP who talked about the history of school photography and also some obligations for new entrants. Dino Apolito from Timestone showed the members of some new upgrades to their popular software,
Stuart Holmes from IPS talked about wet & dry lab printing and suitability to peoples' workflow, Kain Tietzel from Photomerchant demonstrated how online solutions could enhance workflows & profits, and Michael Warshall from Nulab reminded us that the industry needed to be aware that printing is in decline and informed us of future trends overseas that would affect consumer spending.
The members then broke for a 2 hour Kodak sponsored lunch/AGM where there was networking over a lunch while the AGM was held.

The AGM was attended by Jim Esp & Allan Showalter (PMA International) and Peter Rose (PMA Aust.) spoke and said that "PSPA Aus/NZ was now the strongest subgroup of PMA" and "Congratulated the PSPA in getting the Code of Practice & Bylaws rewritten and new members joining."
Peter Cocklin & Andy Cooper from Kodak talked about Kodak's bright future & members agreed that Kodak Paper was widely used amongst the professional labs
and was popular with their clients. National Chairperson Paul Dawson went through the correspondence for the year and it was decided that the Chairperson, Committee & State Representatives were to stay the same for another year with
Paul Dawson remaining the National Chairperson, Cliff Dykes Vice Chairperson & Laura Ferguson remaining as Secretary.

Dawson had strengthened the organisation over the last couple of years and was excited that he could now get to work on making the School Photography Supplier Membership better & easier for photographers to get in contact with industry suppliers. He continually noted the words of Richard Robertson "You cannot be successful in an unsuccessful industry".

Dawson also commented "All Members mentioned that there were great morning sessions and were looking forward to the afternoon sessions".

The afternoon sessions started with the Industry Veteran Barry Moore who always challenges the way photographers think about their businesses & clients. The last session was the best session of the day. Only the hard core stayed for this entertaining session from Lee & Lorna Andrikopoulos. PSPA members were treated to a session of 'selling with emotion' and the attendees were excited to see the industry from not only from a sales angle but as parents who have purchased packs from our members in the last few years.
That concluded the day and then it was off to "The Comedy Club" where 27 members had a hilarious night with Mick Malloy.

The 2012 Conference saw the largest gathering of PSPA members in the 26 year history of PMA in Australia, and congratulations must go to Paul Dawson for organising an excellent PSPA Program and successful event.

Good response from Industry for  Future Leaders Workshops

PMA has received a great response from Retailers and Suppliers who have registered a total of 52 staff to attend Future Leaders Program Workshops in Sydney on Friday 8th June, and in Melbourne on 12th June.

Twenty three Future Leaders will attend the Sydney Workshop at the North Ryde RSL Function Centre on Friday and twenty nine Future Leaders will attend the Melbourne workshop at Arrow On Swanston, Carlton, next week.

Thanks to Teds Camera Stores, Michaels, Paxtons and the Camera House Group who are sending many staff along to listen, learn, and be inspired.

Both Workshops are being presented by the dynamic Juanita Miell, from the Friedman Group. Future Leaders will focus on refining communication skills, enhance business development skills and develop world class, best practice strategies. Workshops are open to all photographic industry employees, of any age, and are a good opportunity for staff to be trained by a proffessional coach at no cost to the employer.

The Future Leaders Workshops have only been been made possible by Program sponsors. A big thanks goes to Platinum Sponsors: Teds Camera Stores, Fujifilm and IDEA, Gold Sponsors: C.R Kennedy, Olympus Imaging and APCI, Silver Sponsors: Australian Photo Supplies and Bronze Sponsor UR1.

Photo Social Networking made a bit easier

One of the best ways to build up followers on social networks is to not talk about yourself or your business, not just make it post after post of special offers but to post up cool, interesting things about the world of photography. Show them interesting, cool sites that either inspire or teach them how to get better at living their passion.

The problem of course is that no one has the time to search the net looking for things that may interest their customers.

Enter a new blog photoretail put together by Glynn Lavender, editor of PMA Newsline and owner of Australia's Creative Photo Workshops.

Glynn has built his Facebook page up to over 20,000 followers simply by talking about photography.

Glynn is building the photoretail blog as a hub for anyone in the industry to access and use the links on their social network page to help build their business.
