| Melbourne IDEA Meeting | |
Last week saw what would have to be the best dressed meeting the Australian photo industry has seen. Held at the prestigious 'Australia Club' a strict dress code was adhered to by all with one attendee commenting that it was the first time in 20 years he had worn a tie.
Katherine Singson, the new special consultant brought into the fold to take the Digital Show to the next level held sway for most of the event. Those meeting Katherine for the first time were immediately impressed with her passion, knowledge and fresh approach. Having previously worked for Microsoft, Apple and Pixar Animation her viewpoint of our industry was fresh and, more importantly, brought new ideas and connections to our show that an imaging industry insider may not have.
One major coup for the show is having Pixar launch its new animated short La Luna at the show.
This short will be given world wide release when it is shown at the beginning of their new animate feature film to be released later this year.
One thing this will do for the show is get media attention to the show that would normally not take an interest and as the old adage goes 'any news is good news'.
Katherine also saw what she called 'The Perfect Storm' in Australia with the convergence of technology, entertainment and lifestyle, and while some see clouds over our industry's future, Katherine sees amazing opportunities for us to play a part in this convergence.
One thing is for sure with media promotion at an all time high for this years show, and new approaches to connecting with customers who attend the show, we will be given a great opportunity as an industry to connect with a very large group of people - what we do with those connections after the show will be telling.

PMA WA Report by Murray Gibbs | |
During the past year we have had a few ups and downs. Our plans for a second WA Trade Show in September last year were put on the "back burner" due to both the economic climate and Suppliers having other committments.
The decision was made to hold a PMA / Industry golf day, and that was a great success with 22 players involved.
Peter Rose was in Perth for a meeting held on the 22nd Feb, and we had a modest turn out with the usual WA suspects in attendance.
It was discussed at the meeting as to the impact of closures such as Rabbit, Kodak and many small independents, that the number of membership renewals was in a constant decline and that there is no clear answer as to how to stop the decline in membership.
The decision was made after suggestion from Howard Frank, that the PMA golf day be changed to an Industry Fishing day some time in November, this was voted unanimously as the way to go.
Peter discussed future directions for PMA and the training aspect is one that is seen by members to be of significant benefit. |

Workplace Health & Safety
A reminder that all photographic shops/labs must comply, I am not aware of any inspector visits yet but they will happen. If any members have had a visit I would appreciate them letting me know how it went. It is very important that the industry take the time to get involved as one day your time will come.
Remember Workplace Health & Safety is not just an M.S.D.S. (Does anyone know what this means? Must be a "white sandshoe" term!) - Editor
Cheers

| Ken Dobson celebrates 80 years! | |
Terry and Pat Rimmer, helped celebrate Ken Dobson's 80th birthday on Sydney Harbour last weekend, together with a small group of family and friends.
As many would remember, Ken spent many years working under Jo Mitchell at Milversons (where Terry also worked) managing the multi store Walton's camera departments , before he joined Camera Distributors (a division of Hanimex), then onto Fletchers photographics.
He is now happily retired with his wife Bernice and living in the beautiful Sth Coast town of Berri, NSW.
Happy Birthday Ken from all your friends in the industry.
Thanks Terry for the photo.

| Time to show your customers you don't just sell - you SHOOT! | |
Far too rarely do the owners and staff of Camera Stores show off the fact that they are not just box movers but actually interested in photography.
Here's your chance to get your staffs photos 'up in lights' - please let them know!
Leading accessories distributor Maxwell International and specialist digital imaging trade website Photo Counter (www.photocounter.com.au), have partnered in a trade-only photo competition, Tamron Best Shots, with an accompanying exhibition at The Digital Show, Melbourne Exhibition Centre, May 25 - 27.
Top prize is the Tamron SP AF 10-24mm wide angle zoom lens (RRP $849) , with up to seven Cokin filter kits, valued at $100 each, on offer as well.
'We've had a subscribers' photo gallery as part of the Photo Counter website from its inception, and it has been well-supported within the digital imaging industry - particularly by retail staff,' explained Photo Counter publisher, Keith Shipton.
'Putting up some prizes as an added incentive was a natural extension, and The Digital Show is a great stage from which to show Melbourne that the people behind the counter are also fellow enthusiasts behind the lens.
'We were delighted that Maxwell International immediately saw what we are trying to do and generously contributed an attractive prize pool without hesitation,' he added.
To enter the Tamron Best Shots competition, go to the Photo Counter (www.photocounter.com.au ) home page and follow the links. Entries close on May 14, so there's not much time left to get involved.
All entries will be exhibited at The Digital Show, and seen by up to 30,000 people.
