The Reason to Have a Regular Industry Forum.

Realistically the only reason organisations such as PMA exist is to provide a social or economic value for the members. Whether we are referring to major International events or a home-town get-together, in the Photographic Industry, these purposes are generally blended.

When surveyed, a majority of PMA members will indicate that interaction with other like-minded members is the main benefit obtained from the organisation. Even so, it is often the hints and tips obtained from the fellow business person that makes it worthwhile attending meetings.

Suppliers and members of our industry are more likely to see each other in a different light. Meeting our suppliers in a more relaxed atmosphere has created bonds beyond the rigid business guidelines. Whilst it is not practical in a country the size of Australia to get together every month - and we don't have the time for that frequency- in NSW we have adopted two meetings per year to help us maintain these bonds.

Having a meeting around March and September allows

disemination of Industry news and more importantly FEEDBACK to the organisers so the ongoing program maintains value for members. Suppliers attend these meetings to contact other suppliers and build relationships with members. If members do not attend, then suppliers will not see value as well.

In particular I would urge all Sydney members who see value in a member organsiation such as PMA to make the time available to be at this function twice a year. Also feel free to invite any other Industry members to the meeting.

*Next NSW meeting is Tuesday 3rd April - North Ryde RSL.

See you there

A new addition to the Gresham empire!

Great news out of Queensland this week.

No it's not the latest news from the Election it is the announcement from Will Gresham of Fotofast of the arrival of his daughter Emily Isabel Gresham!

Needless to say Phil Gresham has had trouble wiping the smile off his face.

I hear she will be the new 'face' of Fotofast's gifting range next week promoting the latest in personalised bibs, mugs and calendars.

Congratulations to everyone from PMA!

William and Natasha had Emily Isabel Gresham on the 28/03/12 at 11.31pm weighing 3.79 kg and 55cm long and perfect in every way

The PMA team have now completed The Digital Conference progam, to be held this year in Melbourne, May 24th to 26th.

Over the next few months we will highlighting many of the Conference sessions in this newsletter, allowing you a "sneak peak" at the broad range of topics brought to you by industry acclaimed speakers.

Today, our featured speaker is A.J. Riebli, Pixar Animation Studios

General Session 1: Thursday 24th May 2012 at 10.00am

Digital Storytelling by Pixar Animation Studios Filmaker, A.J Riebli

Brought to you by IDEA and The Digital Show, A.J. Reibli kicks off the PMA Conference with his insight into the Imaging and Film industry. The most interesting/compelling part of AJ's current experiences is that he's one of the main filmmakers behind Pixar's upcoming feature film BRAVE, which will launch globally the month after The Digital Show and Conference. AJ is a big personality who will entertain and amuse you with his reflections on his career to date.

 AJ Riebli

AJ Riebli began his career at Pixar Animation Studios in March 1997. He started as production office coordinator for "Toy Story 2" and went on to manage various departments for a number of Pixar's Academy AwardŽ-winning feature films. He was crowds manager for "Finding Nemo," editorial manager for "Ratatouille" and animation manager for "Up." Riebli has also worked as production manager on some of Pixar's short films including "Air Mater," "Small Fry" and the OscarŽ nominated short "La Luna."

Riebli also lent his voice talent to two of Pixar's feature films. For "The Incredibles," he voiced one of Edna Mode's security guards, and in "Cars" he voiced the part of Lightning McQueen's Biggest Fan RV.

Riebli's mother owned the first video store in his hometown of Sonoma, California. He worked there as a teenager, and considers it to have been a library and film school wrapped in one. Before coming to Pixar, Riebli held various jobs both in and out of the film industry including high school teacher, truck driver, bartender and freelance grip and gaffer.

Upon graduating from high school in Napa, California, Riebli attended Santa Clara University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. He also attended Dominican University where he earned a single subject teaching credential.

Riebli currently lives in Sonoma, California with his wife and their two children.

When deep discounting loses you customers
Today (Monday 2nd of April) Dick Smith launched its seven million dollar gaming sale.
Sounds like just the ticket to get people into their stores and moving some products.

Their seem to be several factors that have gone very wrong for them though.
First there was the leaked information on Friday on the internet that hinted at major discounts being on the cards. An example of the discounts leaked were Xbox's reduced from $399 down to $100 and games for $1.

The internet forums were abuzz all weekend and come 9am Monday morning the queues outside most Dick Smith stores more closely resembled an Apple product launch than a normal opening sale day.

The second issue seems to be that many of the people in these queues, some who had camped out for days, claim to have seen the Dick Smith staff running around in the store before opening grabbing many of the bargains for themselves and when prices are this cheap, and stock levels low this was always going to cause outrage.

The third issue were the staff in the stores all had a poor understanding of what was going on with the sale.

News.com.au ran the headline 'Dicked Off in this article

Stating many a ticked off customer from forums and Twitter complaining about the sale and the frustration of not getting the products they wanted and in the words of one Tweet 'no wonder no ones buys their games at Dick Smith'

So what are the lessons to be learned from this debacle?

First and foremost would have to be communication.
Do we really keep our staff informed of all aspects of our promotions so that there is no confusion for our customers? Customers getting conflicting responses from different staff in different stores is always going to tick off a customer.

Secondly it shows the damage social media, forums and internet 'leaks' can have on a companies reputation - makes you wonder whether the 'leak' was someone's idea of generating some excitement but in the end really just showed how ugly things can turn when you get this wrong.

And lastly common sense would make you think that staff, and staff family, purchases on deals like these would need to be strictly controlled and in this case it certainly doesn't seem to have been.

We often look to companies who are successful and try to implement some of their best practices into our own businesses.

I think there is just as much to learn from 'failed' ideas such as these to show us how not to interact with your customers.
