It Makes You Think |
Every day in newspapers and TV we hear "bad news" re exchange rates, rising electricity costs, retail store closures and retailers battles with landlords etc. etc..
For any business owner in our industry, is there any wonder they are feeling "a little down"!
However every now and then, an issue makes you realise that you really are well off, and have few major problems compared to many.
Jason and Tess Robertson (Robbo's son and daughter in law) alerted PMA to a fund raiser supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Association, Thanks to the generosity of both Victorian and NSW members we were able to pass on a cheque for $1482.00 following the Xmas functions in those two States.
Jason's thank you note follows:
Hi Everyone,
Just a quick thank you to all for helping us exceed our $10K target!!!! We are so excited to have reached our goal and could not have done this without your incredibly kind donations and pledges. We have increased our target to $13K and believe we will surpass this also. We cannot thank everyone enough and we're all looking forward to the run albeit with less than perfect training.
Check out the website again as we've added some more photos of the boys and are happy to report that they have had a good few months since Christmas. Let's hope we can keep our boys out of hospital this year (fingers crossed). We would just like to re-iterate how important your donations have been not only to the boys and all Victorian CF sufferers but also to their siblings. For all the hours of distress, illness and trauma Jackson and Ned go through, their two little brothers Max and Lucas, also have to endure. Hopefully some of the money raised can go to the siblings camp held each year so all the siblings who lose holidays, weekends, birthdays and special family time in hospital rooms because of this illness, can have some fun without worry.
Keep checking the site as we have a few weeks to go!!!! We will send a group picture of all the runners after the event.
Most appreciated, Tess, Jason, Ned and Lucas Robertson
Chris, Glen, Jackson and Max Seccombe
Kathy has include further details in her article below. Take the time to read it...and follow the link.
On behalf of all PMA members I am pleased we were able to assist in some small way.
Cheers
Peter Rose

| Living with Cystic Fibrosis - by Kathy Warlum | |
In making the donation to CF Victoria, we learned from Tessa & Jason Robertsons Everyday Hero site what it takes to care for a child with CF on a daily basis. It seems that little is published about CF, and, in the hope of raising awareness about CF, we felt we should "lift the lid" on the gruelling routine that each sufferer and family endure.
With Jason's permission I have borrowed a post from their Everyday Hero site. Both the Robertson and Seccombe families report that their boys Ned and Jackson are healthy, fit and happy at the moment, and
the families are in training for the "Run For The Kids" event in Melbourne next month.
17 Oct 11 13:40 PM posted by Tessa and Jason Robertson
Jackson and Ned will attend primary school together in 2012. They both have Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and have spent a large amount of time in hospital. They cannot become friends nor spend time together due to cross infection. CF is chronic and isolating.
Ned is 5 years old. He has: - spent 22 weeks in hospital (4 tune ups) - 10 general anaesthetics - 6 bronchoscopies and lung washes - 100 lung exercises a day when well, twice when sick - 16-20 tablets day - antibiotics everyday - daily chest percussion - headaches and chronic severe stomach cramps.
Jackson is 6 and has: - spent 18 weeks in hospital (9 tune ups) - 6 general anaesthetics - 12 tablets before breakfast -20-25 tablets daily - 45 minutes of physio daily - ventolin, hypertonic saline and pulmozyme nebulisers twice daily - antibiotics daily
What do our boys think of this: Ned - " I hate it and I want it to go away" Jackson - "It's a bugger mum"
1 baby is born with CF every 4 days and the life expectancy is currently 34-36 years of age.
Please help us raise the awareness of CF. The bigger diseases are being heard however the smaller ones aren't. We would love you to join our team or sponsor us for the 'Run for the Kids' in April 2012. There is the 5.7km course or 14.2km course around Melbourne.
Our boys might look like normal little kids but they deal with so much every single day. There are no days off, no cure in sight and not much recognition for the resilience, patience and strength these children, teenagers and adults have.
Please spread the word. Kind Regards, Glen, Chris, Jackson and Max Seccombe Jason, Tess, Ned and Lucas Robertson

| Industry stalwart says farewell | |
PMA has received a note from Ron Mcknight this week:
"Gentlemen, I am retiring at the end of this week, and closing Phototechnical after 35 years.
Thank you all for your help and support over the years.
I must thank you all for the time and effort you put into the Photo Industry, for what seems to me, to be too little reward at times. Without your collective efforts, this industry would be in much worse shape.
Please accept my resignation from PMA. I look forward to catching up with you all in the future".
Regards, Ron McKnight PHOTOTECHNICAL
We will miss you Ron. You have always been a stong supporter of PMA and rarely missed a QLD meeting. Best wishes from your PMA associates.
Enjoy your retirement!

| Criticising your customers.... by Glynn Lavender | |
If you have ever looked over one of your customers photos on Facebook you may have seen the following comments....
"Wow, you have amazing skills"
"What an incredible pic"
"That is AMAZING!"
and many many other platitudes and you have looked at the pic and thought 'REALLY????' THAT IMAGE???
One thing I have found training several thousand photographers over the last few years is that they are desperate for REAL critique of their images.
If you are to believe Facebook friends and fans then everyone on there is the worlds greatest photographer.
And anyone who is genuinely trying to improve finds no value whatsoever in these comments.
One thing we are quick to point out at our Workshops is that WE are not Facebook.
If the shot is no good, we'll not only tell them but we'll send you back in to shoot it again until they get it right.
Rather than being offended they are grateful for the honesty and their images improve because of it.
How does this help the average store?
Well if YOUR customers are desperate for some genuine help in improving their photos and want helpful, honest critique of their work then this spells opportunity!
I was talking to one of the heads of the Tasmanian Photographic Society this weekend while running Workshops for them and he mentioned that the best thing he has got from his AIPP Membership has been the critique sessions.
Membership is costing him hundreds a year and yet some simple honest evaluation of his work is what he has found most valuable.
I know a few stores around the world who are now putting on Photo Critique evenings.
Customers submit 3 images each to be put anonymously into a presentation and over the course of a couple of hours after work the attendees and the person running the event discuss what people like and, more importantly, don't like about the images being projected.
This is fantastic for the consumer, they learn to take better images but what is in it for the store who is running them?
If your customers become better photographers because YOU helped them will they not have greater loyalty to your store?
If your customers become better photographers they will invest in more equipment and print more photos and if you helped them get there it stands to reason you will have a good shot of winning this business.
If you invest some time in helping your customers become better photographers then you are not just another box mover you are a specialty store, you are invested in their hobby and that will change your business - customer relationship forever.
When was the last time you criticised your customers and had them love you for it?
