PMA announces a World Class 2012 PMA Digital Conference program. |
After many months of planning, the program for your 2012 conference has been finalised.
The brief was to develop high quality, future focussed conference sessions, that were of interest to all business owners, to meet today and tomorrows needs.
Marketing via social media, development of websites, email data based marketing and competing with online marketing are a few of the highly relevant sessions you and your team should be attending.
There are also several world-class overseas and local key note presenters, including:
A.J Riebli from Pixar Animation Studios on Digital Storytelling
Mike Walsh on Digital Convergence by Futurtainment
David Mclean, Microsoft Australia on Digital Lifestyle
Stephen Shaw IBM on Winning over The Empowered Consumer.
I am really excited with the quality and variety of speakers for this years conference, in my opinion, they are clearly the best we have ever had.
This has been the result of generous sponsorship from the team at IDEA (Imaging &Digital Entertainment Association) with whom we share the vision, of presenting high quality speakers, presenting relevant issues of value to the entire industry.
I believe we have met the objective.
Now over to you!!

| News - Around the traps | |
APS are currently holding a series of road shows around Australia. When visiting their Sydney event during the week, a slide scanner in the form of a slide projector with trays caught my attention. It looked like a Liesegang projector and seemed ideal for the millions? of slides that are in cupboards around the country. Suggest you buy the unit, buy some spare trays ,have your customers load them in the order they want (after paying a deposit for the trays) and bank the money! It would be a solution that would work for me as a customer.
Bernard Salt (who presented at PMA a few years back), provided in the Australian on Feb 23, some sobering statistics from the recent Household Expenditure Survey :
"spending on Photo equipment dropped 81% between surveys
Video cameras down 50%
CDs down 43%
Photographic film down 40%
He went on to add" The household budget is undoubtedly jettisoning some technology so as to direct spending to new technology such as set-top boxes and internet charges."
As an industry we had better get really good at adding value via services, and an exceptional customer "can do" service ethic if we are going to prosper!
Sad news
Frank Nagy, owner of Koala Frames passed away in recent weeks. His business has prospered over the years ,with more recent help from George Slamer (who worked for Paxtons over a long period)
I was also shocked to hear that George passed away some six months ago.
There are many in our industry who knew and respected both the above gentlemen.
Thank you Stan Kessanis for passing on this news.
Congratulations!
Everyone here at PMA Australia want to send BIG congratulations to Anne Lamb of Brisbane who has just become only the seventh Australian to be awarded the Master Certified Picture Framer from the PPFA.
Well done Anne!

Members News : Ian Sackett - Wollongong Camera House | |
Ian Sackett, proprietor of Wollongong Camera House, NSW, has been chosen as one of only 10 people in Australia to represent the Leukaemia Foundation in the London Marathon in April.
"This will be the last year that people from other countries will be allowed to participate in the well-known Marathon for a charity and want to make sure I can achieve as much support as possible to help the Leukaemia Foundation," said Ian.

This won't be the first physical challenge that Ian has taken part in on behalf of the Leukaemia Foundation. In 2011 alone he ran and finished the Hunter Valley Running Festival Half marathon, the popular City 2 Surf, the Wollongong Relay for Life and the Blackmore Sydney Running festival half marathon. He's very well placed to finish the race and determined to help his fellow Australians affected by blood cancer.
"We are very excited to have 10 people running and working hard to raise funds for the Foundation and run in such a well-known event for us! Ian has been so committed to helping us and we hope the community really gets behind him to make sure this is a huge success," commented Nina Field, Regional Manager at the Leukaemia Foundation.
Money raised by Ian and the other nine Aussie London Marathon participants will help the Leukaemia Foundation continue to provide a range of services, at no cost, to people and their families affected by blood cancer - services that range from educational information on specific blood diseases, through to financial assistance and the funding of vital research into treatments and cures.
The London Marathon (www.virginlondonmarathon.com) will take place on April 22nd, 2012.

| The value of 'Hello'.... by Glynn Lavender | |
We've all heard that greeting customers when they enter your store is important but when was the last time you really looked at how your staff greet your customers?
Last weekend, while in Griffith to run Workshops, I walked into a cafe/bakery for breakfast.
The place was empty except for two two young female staff loading shelves of bread.
I was no more than two steps into the door when they both looked towards me, put on dazzling smiles and chorused a welcoming hello.
Frankly it stopped me in my tracks!
It has been a LONG time since I have been greeted by anything more than a perfunctory 'hello, can i help you' that something as simple as a genuinely happy welcome was enough to have a big impact.
The welcome was so good I went back out the door and entered again just to hear it again!
This of course set the mood for the whole experience in the store as the staff obviously enjoyed having a laugh with their customers, the manager came out and joined in the fun as did one of the bakers.
Needless to say I was back their the next day to hand over more money.
It is amazing how something so simple, yet so easily overlooked, can impact your business.
A welcome I will never forget was in the 'Mr Pizza' store in downtown Beijing. Walking in to the restaurant every one of the 30 or so identically dressed waitresses stop what they are doing wherever they are in the store, face the entrance you are walking in and chorus 'Welcome Mr Pizza' in an eery kind of way before bowing and returning to delivering drinks and food - Odd? Absolutely - Memorable? Most definitely.
In these days of tough economic times there are many things that our out of our control.
How we welcome the people who enter our stores is something we can control and it is something we shouldn't underestimate the value of!

| If you haven't smiled today...... | |
