Changes in the air.
Our Newsline editor Glynn Lavender, Kathy and I will be reviewing ways to ensure the content for Newsline is of maximum interest to you!

All of us are being inundated with emails and "e"newsletters, and no one wants to waste time on irrelevant reading.

More to follow!

Jim Esp and Allen Showalter are in Japan this week, meeting with suppliers to gather their feedback on ways PMA can further assist the industry. We all know "talking to the customer" is critical in ensuring our efforts are in the correct areas.

"Wots on" at PMA?

Plans are now being finalised for the DIMA convention at the Digital Show in Melbourne May 24 to 27.The program is quite different to previous years and aims very much to the future. Some exciting news will follow, re key note speakers. John Bourne is again doing a great job in helping put the convention together.

The program will include specialised sessions for The School Photographers (PSPA),Educators (PIEA) and Framers (PPFA) as well as the main DIMA conference on the Thursday.

Met with Katherine Singson, Paul Curtis and Judd  Ferguson from IDEA (previously PICA) to brief them on our plans, as well as hearing of the progress on sales for the Show floor. Everyone's aim is to see if we can surpass the record attendance of over 20,000 in Sydney in 2011. We believe IDEA will be holding a retail partner "launch" of the marketing program for  consumers in Melbourne on the 17 April. More details to follow.

We are following up all members who have not as yet renewed their membership for 2012 . The ultimate test for any organisation is how relevant you are to your customers and membership gives us a very clear indication of our success or otherwise. This information will be made available to State Chairpersons for possible action or suggestions.

Invitations are currently being sent to members in SA (lunch 21/2/12, Paul Atkins is planning) and WA (22/2/12, Murray Gibbs is arranging) for  their State industry meetings. I will be taking part so am looking forward to a good rollup!

Have a good week!

Best wishes
Peter Rose

Your comments from last weeks editorial : Kodak....What is the future?

I read with interest your comments regarding Kodak however, I have a somewhat different perspective given I worked for Kodak up until 2002.  Kodaks downward spiral is a classic case of marketing myopia crossed with disruptive technology which any MBA graduate today would have identified immediately with a little analysis of the external and internal environments.  I certainly have been surprised at how long Kodak has been able to hold on as they have gone to the well a number of times selling off assets to avoid chapter 11.

I was surprised to read that anyone was shocked of their filing.  Certainly in my opinion Kodak had a huge layer of middle management which impeded it's ability to implement a digital strategy however, it must be said that even in the mid to late 90's they were in denial about digital and its impact on their market.

This article summed it up for me.

An interesting case study I'm sure will make it into almost every business school as an example of a colossal downfall.

David van Gelder.

and from Alice Springs..

All competition is not always fair and necessary.

In my dealings with Kodak it was like dealing with the CIA and getting answers often was met

with "I cannot comment on that. It's not my department". But it was the same Kodak product we were talking about.

Consider the scenario: An established retailer agrees to fully commit to Kodak and

heavily invests in the "Brand". Across the road Kodak sets up in opposition with it's own store

and promotes the "Brand"  retailing at significantly lower margins. Further down the road Kodak ,through it's pharmacy channel sets up minilab services. Again promoting lower margins.

Then through their mass merchants channel you have the supermarket chains discounting the same quality Kodak brand at less than the original retailers cost price.

All of this within the same suburb.

I will not cry for Kodak and as I recently said to Tony Quigley where are all those overpaid visionaries who invented 126,disc and APS and then missed the digital opportunities.

That was an era when Sony , Panasonic, Samsung were not into imaging.

Not to mention Lexar, Sandisk and Silicon Power who were just startup companies.

Compare the Kodak demise with the  Fuji success.

Thanks guys, whilst PMA may/may not agree, we appreciate your thoughts.....keep them coming!

You need to hear this!

The PMA team are currently working on the completion of the DIMA Conference progam, to be held this year in Melbourne, May 24th to 26th.

Over the next few months we will highlighting many of the Conference sessions in this newsletter, allowing you a "sneak peak" at the broad range of topics brought to you by industry acclaimed speakers.

Today, our featured speaker is Robbie Robbertson

Session E1: Thursday 24th May, 1.15pm

"Designing, Developing and Managing a truly memorable experience for shoppers."

The bricks and motor of most physical retail environments offer one dramatic discount over another. For most retailers this is not sustainable. Memorable experiences are difficult to replace by competitors and when positive, are exceptional brand differentiators. Robbie will explore the design philosophy and execution that is instrumental in moving customers through a valuable retail experience.

One of the better articles on Kodak's current position

From the 6th Sight Report

Almost 15 years ago, the leader of Kodak's digital imaging group told us his company lost more in digital photography than everyone else, combined, ever made.

He was hardly bragging of course. He was instead illustrating two points:

1. Despite criticism even back then in 1998, Kodak was heavily involved in digital photography: researching, developing, producing, manufacturing, and partnering.

2. Few if any critics of Kodak's lack of success in digital had any concept of the scale of Kodak's business, and how small the digital photography market was in comparison.

Now it's 2012, and everybody with a blog or a business column has jumped on the Kodak-bashing bandwagon. If there was a pun to be made about the famous "Kodak Moment," you can bet some wannabe-analyst made the joke.

It is far too easy, in these days of ubiquitous digital capture and image sharing, to coach from the couch with 20/20 hindsight. "How could the world's largest photography company not have seen this coming?" everyone asks. "And how could they not have profited from this huge boom in image capture?"
