| Retailers and Suppliers - Have you booked? | |
Tasmania, NSW, Queensland and Victoria all have PMA Xmas functions planned over coming weeks.
Your State committees work hard to make these events happen.
Without YOUR support nothing happens.
The excuses ..too busy, not enough time, forgot to book etc etc are all valid, however why not come along and forget the problems of how you are going to spend all that money you made this year!!
Details of venues, costs and dates are included below.
Look forward to seeing you there.
Do it now!!
Cheers

| A Note From Glynn in the USA |
Currently I am in Allentown Pennsylvania running 14 Workshops for Dan's Camera City. Dan's is one of the most progressive stores in the US and one of the things that makes them successful is the range of classes, workshops and tours they run.
With over 25 classes run EVERY month they certainly give their customers every possible chance to learn how to get the most out of their equipment.
Dan's bring us over twice a year to run events for them. Our events take their customers to another level of competency that is not possible with their classroom based lessons.
Running a workshop company I have always known how much business can be generated by stores that put on events for their customers.
And whilst I know this as a fact sometimes it is only when working with a store as closely as I work with Dan's that you really see this in action.
One of Dan's customers has booked to attend EVERY on of our 14 events we are running for them and at an average price of $240USD a ticket this represented a significant investment in education.
Whilst this income was certainly a nice bonus for the store involved the real long term benefit for them is that they will now have a customer that can take fantastic photos and because of that she now understands why buying better, more expensive equipment is necessary. A salesperson who simply says ' buy this lens it is better than the one you have' relies on a lot of faith from the customer whereas a customer who has used the equipment and knows how to get the best out of it will be far more likely to spend the money.
Halfway through the series of events the customer booked she went and upgraded her camera, bought three expensive fast lenses, a battery grip, strap and filters that added up to over $5000.00USD.
Between the Workshops and the new gear that's an $8000.00 investment at the store in a little over a week.
The value of educating your customers can not be overstated.
What are you doing to give your customers reasons to invest in your store?

| Photo Industry Review and Forecast | |
Being involved in such a rapidly changing industry means access to other peoples opinions on where our industry is headed is a valuable source of information for business planning.
The U.S Photo Industry Review and Forecast may not be Australia specific but the information itself can still be very valuable.
PMA - The Worldwide Community of Imaging Associations announces the availability of the U.S. Photo Industry 2011: Review and Forecast Report to provide photo retailers, online service firms, and manufacturers with a key industry trends report and assist them in long-term business planning. The report includes extended forecasts through 2014 and provides a more in-depth look into various product categories. Report highlight include:
Growing ownership of cameraphones - particularly among Generation Y - is creating output opportunities for the industry.
Generation Y households are twice as likely as other generations to make photo books.
Many cameraphone users do not know the resolution of their handsets. Among those who do know, 40 percent were 5 megapixels or larger.
Available from the marketing research area of the PMA website, the basic report is $49 to members. Nonmembers of PMA may buy the report for $149.

| How to start new hires on the right track | |
Assessing employees starts on Day One. Your hiring process shouldn't be complete until you have a fully-oriented employee with their own development plan -- a clear plan of action that will engage and hold your new hire accountable.
Because the sooner you set expectations for your employees, the more likely you are to have a productive team that supports and grows yourbusiness. And that isn't the only benefit. There are three primary reasons to create individual development plans for managing performance. A development plan will:
1. Set expectations for performance. It gives employees clear expectations for their results. Statements in writing mean there is a greater likelihood of meeting or exceeding expectations. Having clear goals makes them more achievable.
2. Create a coaching document and put a process in place with a road map for advancement and a schedule to review progress, which holds managers accountable for providing feedback.
3. Create a benchmark that shows growth and improvement or the lack of progress against goals. This benchmark will assist you in developing your team members at all levels. Creating a record of improvement will make it easier to adjust the job fit for the employees and to make decisions in a more timely way about where you want to invest in developing employees.
