| A Word From Our President | |
"Our Industry is constantly changing" says Brian Wood, international president, PMA. " We need somebody at the helm with strong leadership qualities and an in-depth understanding of the needs of our members. Nobody knows this industry better than Jim or has a stronger willingness to deal with the constant shift in the paradigms where manufacturing and distribution meet retail."
"Jim Esp has been involved in the photographic industry for more than 30 years. During the last decade, as part of the PMA senior management, the majority of his time was spent working with the overseas markets to help develop some of the worlds most successful PMA conventions and associations in Australia, Canada, and Latin America."
More on Jims appointment follows below, however from a local perspective, this is great news.
No one in Jackson better understands our market, our members and the issues involved.
Expect to see significant change in the near future.
From all of us Jim - well done!

Last week the DIMA Board met online to continue plans for the PMA@CES show in January. It is pleasing to note that attendance for the event is up dramatically over the last show in Anaheim with a 410% increase in registrations and a 222% increase over the 2009 show in Las Vegas.
A lot of this increase is due to people wanting to attend both the PMA and CES shows.
In a world of 'convergence' it seems many stores are looking to CES to find products that can be added to their retail mix from suppliers that would not have ordinarily attended the PMA show.
Cheers

| Jim Esp announced as PMA Executive Director | |
The Board of PMA, The Worldwide Community of Imaging Associations proudly announces the appointment of industry veteran Jim Esp to the position of Executive Director.
So, what's at the top of his list in this new role?

"We have all the right ingredients in place. Exhibit space is nearly sold out, but that's only in the short term."
"Nothing could be more important than working to develop new educational and support programs for our 10,000 worldwide members," he adds. "Included in this effort is a stronger mission statement and better communication systems between all key industry executives in manufacturing, distribution and retail."
"Jim's role as the new Executive Director of PMA comes at a challenging and exciting time for both our industry and the association," says Neil D. Cohen, PMA past president and CEO, District Photo Inc.,Beltsville, Md. "I've worked with him for many years on a variety of different projects and his vast experience makes him the ideal person to lead PMA and strengthen the association going forward!"

| PICA appoints recruitment consultants for General Manager position | |
Dave Marshall, the President of the Photo Imaging Council of Australia (PICA), has announced the appointment of VMG, an executive search company, to conduct a quest for a new general manager.
The general manager will work with retiring PICA executive director Paul Curtis on the new look Digital Show taking place at Melbourne in May 2012.
Commented Dave Marshall, "The position will appeal to a self-motivated entrepreneurial type of person that can see the huge potential growth for the imaging and digital industry."
The retainer for the right applicant will be in the vicinity of $150,000 plus incentive schemes.
Oliver Lee, Director of VMG Search says the skills required are a thorough understanding of market promotion, advertising and pr combined with strong financial management and negotiation abilities.
The successful applicant, after some on-job familiarisation, will need to sell floor space to potential exhibitors across a wide range of digital technology companies, manage event contractors and venue bookings, organise advertising, produce PR information for trade and mass media and be able to act as industry spokesman on related issues.
The successful applicant will be retained on a consultancy basis and have limited time available for other clients for a part of the year.
The consultancy potential exists to also take the Executive Director role with the industry association which requires government lobbying knowledge and the ability to foster creative ideas.
The position can be Melbourne, Sydney or even Brisbane based and interested applicants should contact Oliver Lee at olee@vmgsearch.com.

| Thai floods impact to camera and printer industry | |
Torrential rain since July has caused widespread flooding across much of Southeast Asia and has left hundreds dead, displaced millions, and caused billions of dollars in damage.
Thailand's Ayutthaya province, home to factories for Canon, Sony and Nikon have been particularly hard-hit.
In Ayutthaya province, where flood waters are as deep as three meters in some areas a total of 198 factories with approximately 90,000 employees have been forced to cease operation.
Canon's facility, which manufactures inkjet printers, was closed last Friday, and will definitely affect the production of their newly announced Pixma Pro-1 printer. Canon have also stated that production of some compact cameras will be hit releasing the statement 'While Canon does not have camera manufacturing facilities in Thailand, our parts suppliers have also sustained damage due to the floods which will affect Canon camera production.'
Nikon, meanwhile, has had to suspend operations indefinitely at Nikon (Thailand) Co., Ltd., responsible for manufacture of single-lens reflex digital cameras and interchangeable lenses. The first floor of all buildings at Nikon's facility are said by the company to have been submerged, and operations were halted last Thursday.
Nikon released the following statement:
The latest situations at Nikon (Thailand) Co., Ltd. are as follows:
-
Damages The 1st floor of all buildings at the premises are presently submerged. Details of the damages are now under investigation. As for the employees, the human damage has not been reported so far. The factory is suspending its operation since October 6.
-
Estimated impact to our business performance We are now doing our utmost to estimate the impact of the flood to our group companies and business performance. We assure you to immediately advise the findings once it is judged there will be an important change in our forecast.
-
Recovery We are continuing to investigate details of the damage, but are unable to predict how soon operation will be resumed. We will set up our recovery support system and endeavor to restart its operation as early as possible. We are now requesting drainage of the industrial park to the Thai government, together with the Rojana Industrial Park authority, other companies in the Park and Japan External Trade Organization.
Sony have announced 'undefined delays' to their NEX7 & NEX5 and the A65 at the very least. With a possible movement of production of Cybershot cameras to other production facilities a possibility.
Products such as hard drives could also be affected as many of their parts are also sourced from Thailand.
This issue will make it difficult to plan promotions for the upcoming Christmas period and make the buying decisions even more crucial.

Fujifilm USA launch image cleaning site
|
With so many natural disasters happening over the last 12 months information on repairing damaged images has never been in so much demand. This could be a great resource to provide to your customers.
Fujifilm North America Corp., Valhalla, N.Y., launch of "Tips for Cleaning Damaged Photos" website for consumers in the United States and in Canada. The site includes advice on cleaning traditional photographs; processed film negatives; photo albums; dye sublimation photos, such as kiosk or instant print photos; and inkjet photos, such as those from home printers. Also included is a demonstration video providing viewers with step-by-step instruction.
In the wake of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan earlier this year, many precious photographs were damaged and washed away, so Fujifilm in Tokyo launched its "Photo Rescue Project" site in Japanese. In the following weeks and months, the U.S. was hit with a number of natural disasters, including flooding in the Midwest and south, and most recently in the northeast with a hurricane and additional heavy rains that caused floods, so Fujifilm in North America launched its "Tips for Cleaning Damaged Photos," a similar site with instructions in English.
"Fujifilm recognizes how important photos are, especially in times when they may be in danger of losing them," says Manny Almeida, vice president and general manager, Fujfjilm North America Corp. "So if someone has photos or negatives that are damaged by caked-on mud or sand, Fujifilm wants to offer some tips that people may find successful in cleaning their prints."
