Major changes at PMA HQ

This week has seen the resignation of Ted Fox as the Executive Director of PMA.

Ted held this position for more than 8 years and served the association and the industry for 30 years.

He has been a wonderful leader and will be missed by many.

I know many of you will have become friends with Ted over the years at PMA events both here and in the USA and will know the terrific work he has done for PMA members over many years.

We wish Ted all the best in his future endeavours.

Last week also saw Chad Munce, Executive of Digital Markets, tend his resignation to PMA. For those who have worked with Chad with the DIMA Board and other PMA committees you will know how much his drive and focus will be missed.

Jim Esp will be taking on the role in the interim.

Like any organisation change is inevitable and with change often comes new ideas and vision.

We look forward to hearing more about the new appointees to these roles and their vision of the future direction of PMA.

Just a pre-event announcement that the Tasmanian Xmas Party will be on Thursday November 24th from 6pm
Details to follow.

Ted Fox leaves PMA

PMA, The Worldwide Community of Imaging Associations, announces Ted Fox, executive director of the association, tendered his resignation Oct. 18 to pursue opportunities outside the photographic industry.

"The PMA Board wishes Ted the very best in future endeavors," says Brian Wood, Board President, PMA International.

PMA is pleased to announce Jim Esp was appointed interim Executive Director. Esp has led the International Activities at PMA for 10 successful years. Prior to PMA, Esp's photofinishing and marketing experience was in the retail drug store industry.

Exciting plans continue for 2012 PMA@CES as scheduled. Advance registration is currently more than twice that of our previous two conventions at a comparable time. Exhibit sales in The Venetian are strong and PMA@CES is approaching sold-out.

Wood added, "Other PMA events and activities - including the 6Sight Mobile Imaging Conference,2012 DIMA Conference, PPFA 2012 Convention, and 2012 PSPA/SPAA Conferences - are going forward without delay."

PICA set to launch the new 'Digital Show'

After some months of deliberations and consultations, the Photo Imaging Council of Australia is set to formally launch its new look Digital Show.

Commented PICA president Dave Marshall, "At a planning meeting last May, the PICA board formed a very clear vision of the changes that needed to be made to the annual industry show for the future.

"However, we are a democratic organisation and thus have a need to consult with both our own wider membership and our business partners, such as the AIPP and PMA, on the new directions we seek to pursue.

"A formal vote of PICA at an annual general meeting to be held on November 22nd is still required to put all the plans into effect, but we are now confident that the board's recommendations for a number of sweeping changes will have the full support of the membership."

The proposals before the PICA membership will involve a broadening of the membership base to encompass all importers of digital products:  such as tablets, smart TVs, smart phones, software and accessory products. The adoption of a new constitution will also allow different circles of membership to be introduced to support and compliment other existing trade associations.

Signifying the change is the proposed renaming of the association to the Imaging & Digital Entertainment Association.  An estimated eight new companies are expected to join the new association that already includes companies as diverse as Hewlett Packard, Epson, Panasonic, Canon and Sony amongst its membership.

Result of Convergence

Said Dave Marshall, "We have now bedded down our show planning for 2012. Named The Digital Show, the event will be held at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, 25th to 27th May. It will introduce a new era of collaboration between exhibiting companies and us as show promoters. This will ensure that the best possible brand management image is projected to consumers.

"PICA has a long history of successful show management; with more than twenty annual shows to our credit. But although it is important to us, it is not our real reason for being.  The show is the engine of our industry in that it provides profits - profits which are all returned to the industry itself. Our real success is our ability to return those profits to the industry to grow the size of the industry for all.

"Convergence means that we are now part of a wider industry. And it is now only appropriate that a wider membership of our association has a say in how show profits are returned to support the industry.

"However, the show has to stand on its own two feet. It has to deliver the return on investment to both its exhibitors and the industry.  By working very closely with exhibitors, we are confident that we can do this and thus expand the total size of the business.

"This will involve the adoption of the latest technologies to take the show from a 3 day event to a nationwide virtual show with impact over several months.

"We are now recruiting a new general manager to take our plans further into the future.  In the meantime, we have brought back Paul Curtis as the show director to launch the new format show.

"Paul has an unprecedented record of more than twenty years as a successful show entrepreneur. He will admit to ageing, but he is a yuppie of the first order and is now assembling a team of young talent that will make the 2012 show the most exciting ever held.  He is the Indomitable Showman!"

Said Dave Marshall, "There have already been reports on our planning to expand consumer attendance.  Some have taken this to mean that we will be lessening our bid to attract business and industry to the show. This is far from the case. Friday will remain a trade and business day. But we will make an all out bid for much broader trade attendance and education."

PICA has announced that exhibitor bookings are now open and full information can be obtained from Paul Curtis at paul@paulcurtis.com.au. Tel 0418 257772

Don't believe the headlines...

I was recently reading through the BestPhotoList archive when I came across this post by Steve Giordano Jnr from Lucidiom.

I thought it was a well written piece with some great thoughts and advice and Steve has been kind enough to allow us to reproduce it here. It is well worth a read.

The following was a headline on the front page of a recent issue of The Washington Post ..."An economy thrown into turmoil."  Turmoil.  That's a strong word and I'm sure the editors knew it would grab the reader's attention.  It certainly caught mine - but for a different reason than I'm sure the paper intended.  See, while I'm concerned about the state of the international economy, I am not fearful about the future of our industry.  Instead, I remain as confident and optimistic as ever.

Why?

PMA TV shows you more ways to make money

PMATV once again showcases some good money making ideas. This one should be one you get your staff to watch!

Continuing the series of videos from the PMA Dixie Division annual meeting in Aiken, S.C., Roger Christian of University Camera gives a dynamic presentation on selling the small stuff (basically, anything that's not a camera!). In the last three years, Christian has emptied closets, turned his store inside out to turn old trash into treasure. Take note of his clever display methods for promoting profitable accessory sales.
