Opportunities are where you find them

This weeks Newsline has links to two money making potential ideas, Photo Organising and the Fujifilm Photo Business Builders Holiday Money Making Seminar, combine these with last weeks Cliq Academy Free Photo Class program for PMA members and there is a lot of opportunity for stores to offer new services and new ways of doing business.

More importantly though is that the organising and classes are opportunities that are not price sensitive, are not being turned into commodities and are certainly not going to be seen at your local Harvey's any time soon.

Therefore they are a perfect fit for specialty photo ... but how many people are actually going to do something with them?

My 'day' job is to run Photography Workshops both here and in the USA and I know from practical experience the buying power generated by the educated customer. If you are in retail and not running classes, workshops, tours and events than you are not only missing out on a huge revenue stream you are actually doing your customers a disservice - they want to learn and who better than us to show them (and charge them for it).

Last week we reported that Robbo was hitting Adelaide for a talk - well due to the lack of response Robbo will no longer be attending but the social get together evening is still going ahead. Please get in touch with Paul Atkins if you would like to attend.

Finally, if you have any news you would like to share with Newsline please feel to contact me glynn@creativephotoworkshops.com.au

Jan Novak - a true giant of our time

Jan Novák, who has passed away at the age of 90, was Mr. Photography in the City of Newcastle, NSW, for more than 40 years, as the owner of Novak Camera House.

In this day of electronic imaging and mass distribution, it's hard for younger industry members to imagine that the retailing world that Jan entered as a New Australian from Central Europe via South Africa in 1951, was one of recommended retail prices and quota-limited photo equipment imports, with black & white prints. When he retired just a few years ago, it was a world increasingly influenced by the Internet, digital imaging and the birth of Photo Books created electronically and printed with dry print method.

He worked in wholesale, he rose to be a manager, He dreamed of his own business. He created it. Jan, was one of the most determined and passionate men one could imagine.

That dream came true when he opened Novak Camera House in Newcastle.

Camera House, the leading cooperative in Australia has much to thank Jan for. In 1983, after a disastrous Duty Free venture, the group was in dire circumstances when Jan, along with John Miller, Alan Small, Roger Hart and Joe Magno rebuilt the organisation and its relationships with suppliers to help make the organisation what it is today.

Jan was always a pioneer. One of the first to install a minilab in the early eighties, a stickler for customer service, a man who understood the importance of community and the role of a regional shop in that community.

Jan was never without a camera at industry events, something that far too few people in our industry did then, or now. Thanks to Jan I developed the habit of also carrying a camera to events and for that I am very grateful for I have been able to capture many wonderful images over the years.

Jans war history can be read in his autobiography ' Let's add a little oil to the fire' (Zeus publications 2010) and definitely makes for interesting reading.

Men such as Jan Novak never bragged about their war service. But his pride in receiving a national medal of honour on a last visit to his country of birth just a few years ago, is matched by the honour that those who knew and worked with him had, in the presence of a true giant of our time.

Jan Novak: We who walk this earth in freedom today, do so because of the sacrifice and courage that you and so many of your generation showed. We salute your memory, your perseverance and your passion for life.

John Swainston, Maxwell MD, was a supplier to Novak Camera House for more than 25 years.

PMA Member Survey Part Two

It's interesting to note from the members survey that 40% of all respondees found that services such as payroll service, hire car discounts, Silver Service Club etc were of low importance.

This being the case it would be interesting to hear from members what services they would like their organization to pursue for them.

It is great to see such strong support for the new Future Leaders program with a whopping 75% support for the new version of Young Achievers.

As this program is only one year old we expect it to develop and become an even more important part of the training of your staff over the coming years.

Similar support for the Certified Photo Councilor and Certified Picture Framers programs is also heartening.

The various PMA Newslines also receive strong support so it looks like I get to keep my job for a bit longer.

The work PMA Australia has been doing with organsations such as Fair Imports and the Productivity Commission and with over 90% of people thinking the advocacy role PMA plays on your behalf is worthwhile ensures that we will continue to work hard to push for your rights to Government.

If you have any thoughts or suggestions with regards to the survey we'd love to hear from you. Please

contact kathy at kwarlum@pmai.org

Tough times continue for Kodak

Bloomberg is reporting two Eastman Kodak Co.'s investors are among the companies pressuring the company to sell its imaging patent portfolio because they hold a lein on the Kodak debt. According to the report, "Avenue Capital Group and Blackstone Group LP's GSO Capital Partners LP unit are among investors that own debt in Eastman Kodak Co. and are seeking to profit from a potential sale of its digital-imaging patents, said people with knowledge of the matter.

"The creditors hold second-lien debt backed by Kodak's patent portfolio and want the company to use cash from an asset sale to pay bondholders before pouring proceeds back into money- losing operations, said the people, who asked not to be named because the talks are private. Fidelity Investments and P. Schoenfeld Asset Management LP also hold Kodak second-lien debt, the people said."

PMA TV shows you another potential money earner
Organising peoples personal photos and files for them may seem like a strange business to be in... but not to the Association of Personal Photographic Organisers.
They have found a way to monetise this service and presented their model to a recent regional meeting of PMA.

If you are looking for a new way to connect with your customers and make money at the same time then this could be worth boiling the kettle and sitting down for a watch.
