How far the mighty have fallen

With this weeks announcement in the United States from Kodak that they are hiring restructuring lawyers to 'look at all options'.

This once strong company was reduced to a 'penny stock' after the announcement with a 54% drop in its share price.

There has been a lot of banter on industry forums since the announcement with one writer comparing the fates of the CEO's from both Kodak and Yahoo.

When Antonio Perez took over Kodak the share price was around $30 a share and now languish at below a dollar yet his job seems secure. Carol Bartz the now former CEO of Yahoo was recently fired for not adding value to the company after merely maintaining the share price during the GFC.

One of the main reasons Kodak seem to have hired the restructuring lawyers is to show that they are not insolvent. Kodak for a long time have been looking to sell some of their patents and any company buying patents can be sued if it is shown that they bought them from an insolvent company.

It will certainly be interesting to see where Kodak go from here.

Victorian members: You are invited to attend a meeting of Victorian Photo Industry representatives and PMA Members to be held at the Water Rat Hotel, South Melbourne,  on Tuesday 11th October 2011.

PMA Australia Activities Survey Summary

Firstly we would like to thank everyone who took the time to complete the survey. Your input is incredibly valuable to PMA as we continue to look for ways to offer value and relevance to our members.

You can download the completed results here.

Over the next couple of issues we will be looking at the results in a some detail.

The first notable point would have to be the overwhelming support from members for the annual trade show and convention with 96% off all respondents saying the event was important to their business. This figure, combined with the changes for next years show should ensure another successful event.

The results for the regional shows however were dramatically lower with 65% of people thinking they were of low importance - this is a surprising figure given that many members for years have asked for more regional events. Is this more a case of not having the right types of regional events or is it genuine lack of interest?

The results for regular state meetings were mixed. Nearly a quarter of respondents thought they were of low importance to their business and whilst that means three quarters of people find them valuable. They say that with any member group the more you put into it the more you get out of it and this is especially true of the regional meetings. Those that attend regularly, share their ideas, thoughts and concerns always find that they get a lot out of attending.

Christmas get togethers were almost split down the middle in regards to their importance to members. These events are mostly social occasions and therefore it is not surprising to see this split. They generally will not change your business but they are sure good for blowing off a bit of steam and socialising before the hectic weeks of Christmas.

This split was pretty much the same for other social based functions such as Golf Days.

It is fair to say that in these tough times we are all heavily focussed on our businesses and this is reflected in these figures but as any good psychiatrist will tell you - taking some personal time out to do something none business related can be one of the most beneficial things you can do for your business.

Next week we will look at the rest of the data to see what information it gives us.

Robbo's 'Grand Tour' hits Adelaide.

The Nikon AIPP Event is the largest travelling conference in Australia.

This year it is being held in Adelaide and with over 400 attendees, 20 speakers and a burgeoning trade show it promises to be an event not to be missed.

PMA have enlisted the services of recently retired GM of Teds, Richard Robertson to speak at an industry evening at the Hilton Hotel.

Don't miss this chance to network with fellow PMA members and other AIPP affiliates.
