The battle continues

The Fair Imports Alliance(of which PMA is a  member)  made a further submission to the Productivity Commission in Melbourne during the week .    Main points made were:

  • The issue wasn't online v bricks  and mortar
  • This isn't an anti online retail  campaign
  • We recognized that online is just  another channel to market and you go where the consumer is .
  • Our major argument was about a  level playing field on imports, whether they be brought in by a single person  or a wholesale supplier ,  all  imports should be taxed
There seems to be an opinion held by many within Govt and the Media that  "  even  if  you added the GST and Duties many consumers will say that prices are still cheaper online overseas "
Well of course that is true, there  are  lots of other factors that add  to  those price points  , but  just because lowering the threshold alone won't make us competitive doesn't mean it shouldn't occur . To do nothing makes no sense.

The consumer of course will determine outcomes, however as so many issues are currently working against the "bricks and mortar" retailer, I doubt if the community, business
, or govt are ready for what I believe will be a serious "fall out".

This is not only impacting retailers
,  it will inevitably flow back to suppliers and all services currently supporting local distribution.     If retail is to survive as a serious employer and contributor to the economy (and subsequent taxes) the channel needs to be viewed
as a conduit between manufacturers and consumers with as many impediments to efficient distribution removed.

Probably the first step would be the appropriate minister , with cabinet  responsibility, setting up a Ministerial Advisory Council on Retail to address the myriad of recommendations following the PC final report .       PMA will be present at the hearings in Sydney next week together with John Swainston who has made an individual submission.

FIA and ARA respond to the Productivity Commission

As mentioned in this weeks editorial the Fair Imports Alliance provided its response to the Productivity Commissions report.

Here is their response in full.

Fair Imports Alliance

Russell Zimmerman Executive Director for The Australian Retailers Association (of which PMA is a member) summarized his submission to the Productivity Commission as below:

The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) appeared on Monday as the first witness to the Productivity Commission's public hearing on the Economic Structure and Performance of the Australian Retail Industry.

As the first peak retail industry representative to appear before the Productivity Commission, we were able to outline many of the key issues affecting the retail industry and respond to key points in the Productivity Commission's draft report released on 4 August 2011.

Key points the ARA elaborated on in the hearing a are:

·            The need for changes to Customs parcel processes and procedures in order to make a reduction of the GST threshold for imported goods viable and create a level playing field for Australian retailers competing on a global scale;

·            A review on tenancy and the oligopolistic nature of shopping centre ownership, including the need for third party reporting of turnovers and a common and transparent market rate mechanism for rent setting, as well as transparency when re-negotiating rents. The ARA welcomes the PC's acknowledgement that planning and zoning restrictions are propagating the power imbalance between landlords and retailers at the negotiation table;

·            A call for a review of workplace relations and the need for increased workplace productivity including the current disincentive retailers have to retain low-skilled staff under the current Fair Work Act.

·            Government support to get Aussie retailers online, with key figures on the current and future growth rates of the online retail space and the opportunities for existing Australian retailers to enter into eCommerce as part of their market reach.

The ARA has also represented issues affecting retail and raised in the PC hearings in major metropolitan media over the last couple of days, including coverage on ABC, SBS, Canberra Times and The Australian.

The ARA looks forward to keeping members up to date on the outcomes of the hearings.

SBS Insight talks retailing in Australia

If you missed the recent SBS program Insight's discussion on the state of Australian retailing then here is your chance to catch up. It is well worth the time and effort to sit down and listen.

"Retail is in trouble.

Australians are spending less and retail figures are at their lowest levels for fifty years. Some stores are closing their doors.

Some say Australian consumers are spooked by the volatile sharemarkets and global instability. Others say stores are simply not up to scratch in terms of price, innovation, and offering people what they really want."

Framers gather in Sawtell

The Professional Picture Framers Association (PPFA) recently held a meeting in Sawtell NSW to share ideas and to learn.Ormond Williams, the Australian National chairperson for the PPFA arranged the meeting and also presented.A report from Ryan Webber follows:

Thank you Ormond for arranging a very informative meeting last week at Sawtell Framing!  Ormond put the meeting together in conjunction with the PPFA as a part of their dedication to improving the standards of picture framers working within the industry. Framers came from Ballina, Grafton, Bellingen, Nambucca Heads & Port Macquarie to hear Ormond's presentation on Myths about Conservation Framing which was a real enlightenment to many of the framers who attended. There were also two special guest speakers, Anne Kennett Paper Conservator and Matt Henry Art Broker who gave detailed insights into their industries and how they are concerned with picture framers. Anne's presentation really impressed why conservation framing plays a very important role in protecting art against its many enemies and her challenges to restore damaged and neglected works. Matt's presentation was more design focused and how it relates to him being able to add value to his artworks by complementing them with beautiful but simplistic designs. Matt & Anne both rely on framers to deliver beautiful frames with conservation qualities and it was very interesting to hear their side of the story.

More about Anne can be found at http://www.annekennett.com/ and Matt can be found at http://www.matthenryartbroker.com/

Thanks again to Ormond, Anne, Matt & the PPFA!!

A source of revenue lost? What's happening in your state?

The NSW Government recently changed legislation around the Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA).

Part of the change included identity photos for any employee working within the hospitality industry.

Following enquiries with the appropriate dept we learn the following:      " I have spoken to a representative from OLGR (phone 02 9995 0300) and he tells me it is only Australia Post that is contracted to take the ID photo and create the NSW RSA/RCG Photo Competency Card. He says that the contract was most likely tendered for, and only one company (Australia Post) is authorised to create the photo cards.
He admits that it is "early days yet" and they are still determining the success of Australia Post, and they definitely not interested at looking at other suppliers for the Competency card at this stage.

It would certainly be wise to track the progress of this ID card in case they open tenders in the future
Details surrounding the legislation can be found at http://www.olgr.nsw.gov.au/photocard.asp
It would be wise to contact your local State Dept to see if they are in the process of introducing the same legislation and if there is a chance of being included in the photo taking process. Please let our office know what success you had.

Many thanks to Tania Williams of Yamba photo for bring this to our attention.

Does your store walk the walk??
August the 19th was World Photography Day.
Despite a year's notice promoting the event it seemed to pass almost without notice in Australia.
We have so few events to hang our hat on as an industry it really surprises me that hardly anyone jumped at the chance to have some fun and promote their store and photography in general.
When times are tough you have to do whatever you can to get people paying attention to your store -
here is a great video example of what Snapshot Cameras in Hamilton NZ did to get people excited about the day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEC1VUJqtLc&feature=youtu.be

Note that all the footage was shot with a DSLR - what a great way to showcase what modern cameras can do - imagine the questions their staff would have got from the customers seeing this kit in action.

August 19th 2012 is the next World Photography Day - what are you going to plan?
