Change Continues

Good Afternoon,

With people getting back into the swing of business full on after the End of Financial Year and the Imaging & Entertainment Expo it has made all the effort worth while to stage this event with the great feedback we have continued to receive over the last week.

Thank you for taking the time to write to us and tell us how beneficial you found the conference and trade show.

With the media release this week announcing PICA taking over the reigns of the Imaging & Entertainment Expo we are assured that the major players in our industry work hard to ensure the success of future shows. PMA look forward to building on the Conference side of the show and making it a must attend event for everyone in our industry.

This week we feature an article on the new initiative of the Future Leaders Program and the winner of Exceptional Future Leader Rachel Edmunds from Hydro Photographics. Rachel was indeed a worthy winner and it was a terrific experience to meet the future leaders of our industry as I attended each of the state programs.

We are sure this program will have a very bright future and will go from strength to strength. Congratulations Rachel!

It was almost a clean sweep for Hydro with owner Paul Dawson being honoured with the Distinguished Service Award earlier in the show.

It certainly shows that a business that is run with passion attracts both passionate staff and passionate customers.

Well done Hydro!

Cheers

Peter Rose

PICA takes over the reigns of the Imaging & Entertainment Expo

The following press release is in the process of being  sent to all PMA and PICA members today. It follows extensive discussions between the two parties on the future running of the show.

Today's agreement results in PICA taking over management of the show, to take effect from the 1/8/11.
I wanted to ensure PMA members received this news directly.

I would like to thank  those  many PMA members who have done so much, in ensuring we delivered what has become  a  truly world class event, of which we can all be proud. On behalf of all PMA members I would also like to thank the team that made it all happen.John Bourne,Kathy Warlum,Eve Phillips,Paul Curtis,Rebecca Walton and Lucy Wang all played their part.We ended up with an efficient group that continued to "raise the bar ". The Australian PMA executive under the Chairmanship of Richard Robertson is also to be thanked for their valuable ongoing contribution both now and in the future.
We look forward to assisting PICA in continuing to deliver profits for the betterment of the industry as a whole.

MEDIA RELEASE: Industry moves to build on photo show success.

The recently concluded photo show at Sydney's Darling Harbour broke all previous attendance show records with a one-time visitor count in excess of   20,000. According to PMA director Peter Rose many visitors go through the doors more than once and such shows are normally reported by event organisers to be in excess of 35,000. This puts the Imaging & Entertainment Expo into the big league of events in Australia.

Commented Peter Rose, "It is gratifying to note that the show has again worked as a lever for increased consumer activity at retail. It's not just a question of one retailer that has benefited:  it's a whole wide range of retailers from  right across Sydney to the outer metropolitan areas. We are receiving  reporting increased sales activity from all these areas and from all manner of outlets."

However, the Australian photo industry is not taking the show's success as an excuse to rest on its laurels. PMA International and the Photo Imaging Council of Australia have been negotiating a major revamp of the show in a bid to develop a continuing relationship that will take the industry well into the current decade.

Said Brian Wood, International President of the Photo Marketing Association, "The Australian show is the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere. It continues to play an important role in trade and consumer education. We can attribute much of the forward thinking success of the Australian photo industry to our cooperative arrangements with the Photo Imaging Council.

"This show is big and both organisations have to build on their strengths. What we need to do now is  evolve a new business model capable of  taking us through the constant changes the industry is facing."

Under the new agreement, PICA will have increased local autonomy in order to better focus on the issues of building a higher return on investment for exhibitors in the professional, trade and consumer areas. PMA will concentrate on building a wider and stronger education program and a range of new support services for retailers.

Said PICA President Dave Marshall, "While strengthening our appeal to consumers, there will be no lessening in serving the special needs of the professional and trade sector exhibitors. Indeed, to the contrary we will be introducing a new format to enhance that market. We have to look right across the industry board to ensure that all exhibitors get the maximum bang for their buck."

The next show is tentatively booked for Melbourne next May, but offers from other venues in both Sydney and Brisbane are currently being considered. A further announcement is expected shortly.

uture Leaders has a bright Future

Fifty five of our industry's youth attended the new PMA initiative 'Future Leaders' earlier this year in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.

The objective of the program was to expose as many young people as possible to leadership and management training rather than reward one individual.

Overall the program was a great success with excellent feedback from attendees, strong support from businesses across all areas of our industry and attendees travelling from other states to attend.

Part of the program was to ask for voluntary submissions from attendees answering a series of leadership and management questions and scenarios. From those submissions one attendee was to be selected as the 'Exceptional Future Leader'.

Eight submissions were entered and were all of a high calibre making the task of choosing just one difficult.

We were delighted to announce at the industry Sundowner at PMA the winner:

Rachel Edmunds of Hydro Photographics in NSW.

Rachel embodies everything we were trying to achieve with the Future Leaders Program. She is a passionate member of our industry who is striving to learn as much as she can about the photography industry.

Congratulations Rachel, a worthy winner!

Rachel Edmunds Future Leader 2011
Brian Wood & Jim Esp with Rachel Edmunds 2011 Exceptional Future Leader

We would like to thank the following Future Leaders for taking the time to put in submissions, the entries were all very good and showed what a bright future our industry has.

Submissions for Exceptional Future Leader Award:

                               Bevin Hearne, Bowral Camera House

Kimberley Degenhardt, Foto Riesel Camera House

                               Rachel Edmunds, Hydro Photographics

                               Stacey Cameron, Katoomba Camera House

Matthew Paxton, Paxtons Camera Video Digital

                               Nathan Muller, Nulab

                               Joanna Robertson, Bond Imaging

Michelle Newman, Teds Camera Store Adelaide

We are looking forward to putting on the Future Leaders Program in 2012 to benefit even more of our youth.

Thanks should be extended to the Victorian PMA committee (in particular Peter Budd & Glynn Lavender) for the work they put into the revised program. New guidelines were written, new promotional piece designed and it was good to see the sponsors again supporting the program.

Do you have your head in the Cloud?
One of the big buzzwords of the moment is 'Cloud Computing'
The ability to access your data, images and files anywhere and at any time is a freeing concept. You no longer need to lug hard drives around. Computers can become smaller and lighter as the need to store all the information on the computer is no longer necessary as you as you have access to 'the Cloud'.
But (isn't there always a but) like any technology based product or service there are always going to be teething problems, glitches and outright failures.
Relying on one method of back up, storage and access is almost guaranteed to end in tears at some point.
It is up to us to make sure that not only do we have redundancies in our processes but that we educate our customers about protecting their images.

Check out this article on '10 Worst Cloud Outages and what we can learn from them' and see how to avoid some common issues.
