Positive response from PMA Joining CES in 2012

Good Afternoon,

It has been just over a week since PMA announced its move to join forces with CES in Las Vegas in January.

Although not totally unexpected initially the news still came as a bit of a shock to some and a welcome 'hurrah' to others.

Long time industry figures are calling it a fantastic move and will allow for  far greater opportunities for everyone involved.

With the ability to check out the latest from the CE channel at the same time as attending PMA many wholesalers and retailers are looking forward to the opportunity for new agencies and new products to hit the shelves, and therefore open up potential new sales channels, for everyone.

Overall the reaction across the globe has been one of optimism and potential.

Several Australian industry figures have also stated that this change now makes the Australian show of even more importance as a vehicle for showcasing new products and increasing education.

We look forward to watching the development of the new show and conference and would love to see as many Australians in attendance as possible.

Our new Future Leaders program has now wrapped up and whilst there was slow initial take up of the program the end result was very pleasing with over 50 of our industry's Future Leaders attending some really valuable training sessions run by the Friedman Group.

It was great to see so many young people receiving training and it felt like the program was certainly offering more to the industry than the previous Young Achiever Program could , due simply to the fact that more people benefitted.

The reaction from store owners who sent their staff has been very pleasing with many commenting that their staff returned energised, passionate and looking for ways to improve - and that can only be good for everyone!

We look forward to developing the Future Leaders Program into a 'must attend' program for the youth in our industry.

Thank you to everyone who made the effort to send their staff.

Cheers

Peter Rose

Customs admits no proof to back up GST threshold advice

The Fair Imports Alliance said it received a written admission from the Customs and Border Protection Service on Tuesday that proved Custom's advice to the Government about a lower GST import threshold being economically and administratively unfeasible was baseless.

Customs officers this week stated in an email to the Fair Imports Alliance that 'Customs and Border Protection has not undertaken analysis of which threshold level will be administratively feasible.'

The Fair Imports Alliance spokesperson Brad Kitschke said the admission proved previous government decisions to maintain the low value import threshold at $1000 were made without any factual basis.

"The Government, from the Prime Minister down, has said it cannot lower the threshold because it would be economically or administratively unfeasible. It is now clear the Government and industry has been lead down the garden path by the bureaucrats in Customs," Kitschke said.

The issues paper, released by the Productivity Commission last month as part of its review into the structure of the retail industry, determined the Commonwealth is missing out on an estimated $1.3m per day or $480 annually in GST income alone, but the Fair Imports Alliance said uncollected Commonwealth revenue could be much higher once Custom duties were considered.

"Custom duties are also charged at the border, with a varying scale of rates, (footwear 5%, and apparel 10%). Once estimated uncollected custom duties are added to the estimated $480m in lost GST, the uncollected Commonwealth revenue could be as high as $700m as a conservative estimate.

"It is staggering to think a Government agency like Customs cannot implement an efficient system to collect this revenue and even more impossible to understand how it advised the Government that something is not economically feasible to undertake, when they have never carried out any modeling to prove so." Kitschke said.

Are you promoting the Imaging and Entertainment Expo?
The cancellation of this years PMA / Cliq event in Las Vegas certainly brings home the importance of everyone getting behind our Imaging and Entertainment Expo and Industry Conference.

Our show is vibrant and successful BECAUSE of the great promotional effort of local stores.

Getting as many of the public aware of the event and making sure they understand they can attend for free is critical to the ongoing success of our show.

If last years show in Melbourne is anything to go by the flow on sales to local businesses was fantastic and the more effort the stores made (some even put on buses to ferry their customers to and from the show) the more their store benefited.

Here's some great examples of Paxtons getting into the swing of things.

Ted's  remember a good friend and colleague

 Michael John Hart                            11.09.1948 / 28.04.2010

In the early hours of 25th of April 2010 while preparing to participate in an Anzac day dawn service with his trombone, Mike suffered a cerebral hemorrhaged which led to his untimely Death.

Michael John Hart was the youngest of three children, growing up in Adelaide, with his mother and older sister and brother.

In 1968 Mike married Chris and together they created a family of three sons, Michael Jnr, Nathan and Ben. He was the proud grandfather of three grandchildren.

As a teenager Mike became associated with the Salvation Army. His ongoing involvement as a Salvo musician playing trombone led to many varied engagements including International Missions to Singapore and South Korea, as well as weekly participation in the worship services of the Noarlunga Corps.

During his 20 year career with Ted's Camera Stores Mike was never afraid to speak his mind he was always supportive, encouraging and a good sounding board.

Mike was a man who made everyone feel joy, laughter and happiness in life. He loved life, his God, his family and his work.

One year on Mike continues to be sadly missed by his friends and colleagues at Ted's Camera Stores.

Are you loyal to your customers?

There is always talk among businesspeople about how price preoccupied and how disloyal customers are these days. Many businesspeople complain that some of their long term customers switch brands or providers when they are offered only a slightly better deal by their competitor. "Where is the customer's loyalty?" they cry.

Guess what?

I think most businesses are LESS loyal to their customers than their customers are to them!

How often do you see companies offering a special deal to get new customers or win back old customers when very little has been done to nurture the relationship with the existing customers?
