PMA Joins CES in 2012

Good Morning,

It is still too soon to gauge wide industry reaction to yesterdays announcement, however from my perspective it is the best news received from Jackson in recent memory!

Everyone knows the industry has been converging since the introduction of digital. In recent years that trend has been accelerating.

It was obviously a big decision for the PMA board and management to change from our stand alone event to co locate with  a huge show that attracts over 100,000 attendees. Recent events in Japan  only exacerbated the situation .

PMA and its members will benefit in many ways:

It will :

1) Ensure the longevity and focus of "an imaging show"still under the PMA banner.

2) Allow a cost effective participation by exhibitors who need to show a strong ROI in a trade show

3) Ensure maximum trade attendance via a "must attend" event

4) Maximise attendance at the convention as a wider audience is available add  to the quality of the convention program

5) Avoid the decision by retailers and suppliers (a major one for the Australian trade) as to which show to attend.

Now it is all under "one roof"

My only regret is that some of you may have already made bookings  for September.Hopefully your airline will be accommodating.

A breath of fresh air!!

On another positive note, this week saw three of the Future Leaders events run and it was an absolute pleasure to see the youth of our industry really learning about how to grow a business.

Well done all who attended and I know the stores that made the effort to send staff will directly benefit from their commitment to their staff.

Cheers

Peter Rose

PMA Co Locates with CES in 2012

JACKSON, Mich. - The Photo Marketing Association International (PMA) today announced a partnership agreement with the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), owner and producer of the International CES, to move the September 2011 PMA International Convention and Trade Show (aka CliQ 2011) to colocate at the 2012 International CES, scheduled for January 10-13 in Las Vegas.

PMA@CES will offer industry-specific content and display products representing all aspects of digital imaging. PMA will also offer its well-known educational seminars, complementing and enhancing CES programming.

"PMA colocation with CES creates a great opportunity for our combined audiences to learn from each other, grow, and take full advantage of the integration and connectivity of personal content (in the form of digital photography) and home entertainment," notes Ted Fox, executive director, PMA. "This convergence will expand with continued enhancements to camera phones and tablets."

"This collaboration will significantly enhance the 2012 International CES digital imaging product offerings for our retail and other audiences," says Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CEA. "Technology is speeding the rapid convergence of digital photography and home entertainment systems. The breadth and scope of digital imaging product offerings that PMA will now bring to CES will complement and further expand the extensive growth of CES in this product category."

According to Fox, "Our agreement [with CES] is an excellent example of two trade associations coming together to constructively and proactively address challenges and provide new opportunities."

PMA@CES will be located at the Sands/Venetian and will be sponsored by PMA. Companies interested in exhibiting should contact Melissa Aldrich or Jeff Frazine at 800-762-9287 or +1-517-788-8100 (internationally). They also can be reached by email at maldrich@pmai.org or jfrazine@pmai.org.

PMA Future Leaders Program

PMA's Future Leaders Program was launched last week, commencing with the the first Workshop being held in Sydney on Friday 29th April, the second in Melbourne on Tuesday 3rd May and the final workshop being held in Brisbane on Wednesday 4th May. Despite an initial slow start to enrolments for the Workshops, there was an excellent turn out across the states, with over 20 young Future Leaders in attendance at both the Sydney and Melbourne Workshops, and one dozen Future Leaders in the Brisbane Workshop.

The Sydney Workshop saw a great mix of Industry Future Leaders - the Workshop was well attended and supported by Fujifilm and Olympus Imaging, and the Camera House Group was well represtented with Future Leaders travelling from Erina, Katoomba, Bowral, Macarthur, Castle Hill and Sydney to attend. Both Foto Riesel and Paxtons saw value in sending their Future Leaders to the Workshop, as did Hydro Photographics who had had two Future Leaders, Rachel and Sarah, travelling from Port Macquarie to attend. All groups represented - Suppliers, Retailers and School Photographers reported that they saw great value in the information provided by the Friedman Groups, Kassandra Lewis.

The Melbourne Workshop also had a good mix of Industry Future Leaders, with groups from Teds & Michaels, Professional Labs (Bond Imaging and Nulab), School Photographers (Schoolpix) Picture Framers (J.R Framing & Art), Suppliers (Fujifilm) and other Retailers in attendance. Future Leaders travelled from Adelaide, Hobart, Albury and Wangaratta  to attend the Melbourne Workshop, and PMA would like to thank and acknowledge these Members and their staff who made a big effort for their Future Leaders to participate. The Brisbane Workshop saw a smaller group, but not one lacking in enthusiasm. Once again, a great mix of businesses were represented, from Picture Framers (Framing Corner Toowong & Art of Framing Toowong), Suppliers (Olympus), groups from Teds and Peters Camera House, Fotofast, and two Future Leaders travelled from the Gold Coast (Garricks Camera House) to attend. A big thanks to all those that participated in the Future Leaders Workshops for 2011.

PMA Australia Newsline Editor, Glynn Lavender, sat in on the Melbourne Workshop to write the following report.

"In Melbourne on Tuesday PMA ran it's Victorian Future Leaders training day.

There was a terrific turnout of over 20 young members from all areas of our industry.

The importance of a training day such as this was valued so highly by some companies that team members were sent from Tasmania and far flung reaches of Victoria as these companies knew that a day spent in the capable hands of the Friedman training group could only help their businesses to improve.

One of the real early eye openers for the attendees was the realisation of just how low most salespeople's conversion rates are and that improving in this area, rather than trying to find ways to get more customers through the door, is the fastest way to improve a business.

Once this fundamental shift in thinking was understood Kassandra Lewis from the Friedman Group then broke down the role of the sales manager and demonstrated how our future leaders can work with their team to increase their conversion rates and thereby improve overall results.

The sales manager role was then broken down in to it's four key components Sales Person / Trainer / Operations Manager and Sales Manager.

Each attendee worked throughout the day on challenges set by Kassandra to work through how each of those roles can change the way a business is run.

Another eye opener was having each attendee analyse what kind of person they are by using the DISC profiling method.

Understanding that there is no single of dealing with all personality types is a great step on the path to becoming a great sales manager and a great tool for the Future Leaders of our industry.

The afternoon session kicked off with analysing the difference in sales between a stores top sales performer and the lowest performer.

When this was broken down into a per hour figure and compared like for like another way of growing a stores volume was discovered by the attendees.

Understanding how to grow a stores lower performing sales member incrementally showed how stores can increase their sales by 20-30% in sales over a 12-month period.

Kass ran through a series of examples on setting sales targets for team members, Fair Share targets and methods of achieving these targets.

Overall the twenty Future Leaders of our industry spent the day learning more about how a business needs to run and how they can implement changes to ensure the business they are involved in.

In the words of one attendee 'I have learned more today about business than the last four years at 'Company X'.

Judging by the feedback PMA has received from attendees in other states this new training program has been an enormous success and looks to become an important part of the development of the youth in our industry."

A big Thank You also goes out to the PMA Future Leaders Program Sponsors: Yaffa, Fujifilm, Teds, Olympus Imaging, Australian Photo Supplies, C.R Kennedy, APCI, PhotoEdge Group, Maxwell International and UR1. Without funding from these sponsors, programs such as the Future Leaders Workshops would not go ahead.

Are you keeping the right superannuation records?

The ATO has strict guidelines on the payment of superannuation and the associated record keeping requirements. You can use any record keeping method that suits you best for your super guarantee payments and choice of fund obligations, however, the following guidelines apply:

  • Your records must be written in English (or in a format that can be easily accessed and converted into written English)
  • You must keep your super records for five years
  • If you keep electronic records, software must be available to access older floppy disks, CDs and computer records

Even if you are using a clearing house to distribute super to your employees' funds, you're still responsible for keeping adequate records.

Did you know that ADP's Electronic Payment Services (EPS) collects and on-forwards payments to third-party recipients including superannuation and many other payments? And the bonus is that all the essential reporting is provided to our EPS clients as part of the service.

Below is a helpful guide on records you need to keep:

1.     Super Guarantee Records

ˇ         Records showing the amount of super you paid for each employee including the name/s of the complying funds the contributions have been paid to

ˇ         Any documents that helped you calculate the amount of super you paid

  1. Choice of Super Fund Records

ˇ         You must keep records to show you have offered your eligible employees a choice of super fund

  1. Super Guarantee Reporting Requirements

ˇ         Tax law doesn't require you to report to your employees about the super contributions made on their behalf, however, by doing so this may help you manage staff enquiries

ˇ         Some workplace legislation, awards or agreements may require that you report super contributions on payslips (especially relevant to the Fair Work Act)

Huge Retail job losses no exaggeration - Black

By Lorna Brett/Connected Australia

National Retail Association (NRA) executive director Gary Black has told Connected Australia estimates that 50,000 Australian jobs will be lost in the next five years as a result of online shopping "is no exaggeration."

According to Black, if the playing field isn't leveled for Australian bricks and mortar retailers and their online counterparts, employment will be hit hard.

"People treat these estimates as if they're exaggerated, but that's not the case. It's important to understand that online sales make up 4% of retail trade in this country, but 50% of total retail trade is made up of food and cafe sales - which you can't buy online," he said.

"So if you remove the areas of retail that aren't traded online, that 4% quickly becomes 10%," he added.

Black said an NRA survey of retailers found most are losing 10-20% of sales to international e-retailers, who are exempt from paying GST and customs duties.

"Even though local retailers are making moves to improve their online presence, if the paying field isn't leveled they'll fail to capture even 25% of the $20 to $30 billion Australian's are expected to spend online in the next 5-7 years," he said.

"When you consider these figures, the forecast that 50,000 jobs will be lost is more than justified," he added.

Electrical retailers not as bad off as others

Electrical retailers aren't suffering to the same extent as some retail categories, Black said, but this doesn't mean they aren't seeing sales going offshore - and sales lost overseas will only increase in years to come unless the government changes GST exemption laws.

"It really depends on an individual retailer's product mix. Consumers are hesitant to buy big screen TV's offshore, but they're not so reticent when it comes to buying PlayStation's and other smaller goods overseas. So a retailer with a product mix made up largely of goods under $1000 would be suffering," he said.

"Even those in the electrical industry who're making the right moves to create an online presence are going to see sales lost overseas in the next 5 years," he added.

When it comes to consumer understanding of the impact their overseas shopping has on the Australian economy, Black expects it won't hit home until they're personally affected.

"The pivotal moment will come when consumers feel a personal impact as a result of the exercise they've been enjoying so much [shopping online]. Maybe their child won't be able to get an after-school retail job," he said.
