Expo Consumer Campaign gets its focus | |
Good Afternoon
The steering committee for the consumer campaign to back the Imaging and Entertainment Expo met in Sydney yesterday. The purpose of the meeting was to agree on the content, direction and media to be used to ensure maximum quantity and quality of prosumers, B to B customers, and professional attendees at the show.
John and Marcia Paxton,John Ralph,Mark Alderson,Nic Peasley,Stan Kessanis and Alison Lyons, provided a wealth of ideas to Paul Curtis, who is managing Marketing of the event.
It was agreed TV,radio, press, social media would all be included in the campaign, as well as the strong trade and enthusiast magazine already underway.
A very pleasing outcome was the universal support for working with suppliers, to ensure consumers have an incentive to visit retail stores following the show. All agreed this strategy was key to making the event cost effective for suppliers and retailers alike.
The " launch night" for the consumer campaign (all suppliers and retailers are welcome) will be held on the evening of May 24.

A visit to Port Macquarie
| |
The role of Chairperson within PMA is an honour and a responsibility.Ormond Williams MCPF, owner of Ormond's Framing in Port Macquarie accepted the position of Australian Chairperson for the PPFA ( Professional Picture Framers Association) at last years PMA show. Since then Ormond has concentrated on building membership via educational sessions and improving communication via an excellent e news that he edits. His energy and understanding of the industry will be of great benefit to PPFA and its members.
I recently had a chance to visit Ormond's business to learn of the challenges in the framing industry, and the effect that the lack of printing photos is having on the Framing industry.Add to this the active promotion by mass merchants of "stretch canvas" prints ( an area that was the domain of Framers) and we have some opportunities!
Discussions led to "how to expand sales". This issue is all too common for specialty stores of all types. The gathering of email details for current customers is really important if you accept that your greatest fans are those who already do business with you.We have all heard this before, however if I were looking to find the most cost effective way of promoting my services it would be via the internet and directed to my current customers.
Thanks for the hospitality Ormond!
Cheers

Wholesalers respond to new Consumer Laws - Olympus
| |
The New Australian Consumer Laws contain changes that will impact your business in various ways.
PMA contacted the main suppliers to help ascertain how they are treating the new legislation.
The following responses(in red) were received from Olympus :
1) Will suppliers still provide a warranty which states a fixed time - eg 12 months? No we cannot state a fixed time on any written warranties and are busy removing this from all our materials.
2) Will suppliers issue guidelines as to what is a "reasonable" warranty period and
will this be based on time,or purchase price, or a combination of both ?
(eg will a $80 Samsung be warranted for the same time as a Canon 5D MKII ?)
We are working on a framework to identify reasonable periods but will not release this until we can get a better understanding of the industry average. Our approach will be focused on time, cost and other factors such as conditions of use etc.
3) In the above case ,do retailers send faulty cameras to the supplier after 12 months, and more importantly, if they are rejected for warranty will there be a handling charge?
We have not asked for cameras to be returned after 12 months at this point. We have asked that our retail partners follow our current returns policy and thus claims after one year will be managed in consultation with Olympus first via phone and if deemed necessary we will have the goods returned. This will be at our cost but with limitations. If the fault is consumer driven we will bill accordingly.
4) Will suppliers support retailers in the case of a claim ie will they attend court to set precedent for the above ? Hard to answer but we will stand by our brand, products and work with our trade partners with a view to a fair outcome for all parties
5) How will retailers handle "money back" returns from customers, when original packaging has not been returned? As long as all the components are returned we will have no choice but to absorb the issues around no packaging being returned.
The answers from Olympus are quite different from those of Panasonic (in last weeks Newsline) which highlights the challenge these new requirements are for all involved.
We will keep you informed of any other responses from other wholesalers. |
Small Businesses Lose $100k Annually to GST Exemption - survey
|
| | |
By Lorna Brett
The National Retail Association (NRA) has presented survey results to the Productivity Commission it says proves small retailers are losing more than $100,000 each year as a result of the GST exemption on overseas e-tailers.
In a letter to the commission, NRA executive director Gary Black (pictured) said survey results show thousands of Australian SME's are being seriously and negatively impacted by the continuation of the exemption. 76 retailer respondents provided dollar estimates of sales lost as a result of the GST exemption, with 54% estimating sales losses amount to more than $100,000 per annum and 20% estimating the losses total between $50,000 and $100,000 per annum.
"In general terms, the NRA estimates the total value of purchases below the threshold from foreign retailers is in the range of $5 billion to $10 billion per annum. This means that GST leakage is in the order of $500 million per annum and lost or foregone duty and customs clearance fees is in the order of $200 million per annum," Black said.
Turnover, growth and employed impacted The survey found 96% of retailers felt the continued operation of the threshold has negatively impacted turnover, growth and employment. All respondents reported the negative impact of the threshold has rapidly increased in recent years, and is expected to rise further. 46% of retailers indicated that the negative impact has extended back 3 years or more. 12% of retailers estimated the loss of sales to foreign competitors at more than 50% of total retail turnover, whilst 19% believe the loss of sales overseas totalled more than 30% and less than 50% of total retail turnover. 26% of retailers estimated the loss of sales at more than 20% and less than 30% of total retail turnover and 18% of retailers estimated the loss of sales at more than 10% but less than 20% of total retail turnover.
Black said the "great majority" of respondents reported contracted employment as a result of the threshold and competition from cheaper, low-value imports.
"If the survey returns are representative of particular sectors of retail we estimate that the threshold has already cost over 2,000 jobs in these particular sectors alone. On average each survey respondent has shed between 1 to 2 jobs which they attribute to the tax free threshold," he said.
"Both our Australian retailers and the foreign retailers are selling the same products to the same consumers ... there is direct competition between them but not on a level playing field," he added.
