Our thought's go out to Christchurch

Good morning.

We are all shocked to see the shots on TV of a devastated Christchurch, and to only guess at the possible loss of life.

To have one major event last year, and now to follow up with something worse, must shake everyone's confidence and resolve.  Everyone in PMA Australia is thinking about our cousins in Christchurch.

The severity of the situation is brought home even more when we hear of the damage caused to Lawry Hanafin's business which has been reduced to rubble, only months after the last earthquake demolished his home; Photo Warehouse has also been destroyed.  We are still waiting for news from Greg Branwell.

Garth Burleigh, the PMA man in NZ has been ably keeping us advised as to what is happening and who has been affected.  I have offered our help to all PMA members in Christchurch on behalf of the membership of PMA Australia.

STOP PRESS:
We have found out from Garth just prior to sending this newsletter out that Ken's Camera's has been badly damaged, as has Photo and Video in Merrivale Mall.  Garth tells us the situation on the ground is very grim with about 100 dead and many more trapped.  He also says how grateful he is "for the support we have received from our Trans Tasman neighbours and seeing the true ANZAC spirit at work."

More news will follow

Have a good week.

Cheers

 Garth Burleigh moves on

Dear fellow PMA colleagues,

The past two and a half years have been the most exciting in my photographic career with many highs and fortunately few lows.  Unfortunately the time has come for me to seek out new opportunities and a bit of a lifestyle change; hence this has meant that I have reluctantly have resigned my role with PMA in New Zealand.

Each and everyone of you have made my role within PMA so enjoyable and your support and friendship so special.  I will miss being able to share with you our industry thoughts and inspirations at the annual convention, not to mention the wonderful social activities interaction that PMA is renowned for.

Every industry is without its challenges, including PMA, however, with the calibre of people like you I know its future is in good hands.

I will watch from the sideline with interest the new changes and direction PMA is taking and I wish each and everyone of you and your families the very best for the future.

Kind regards

Garth

GARTH BURLEIGH

Best wishes

Peter Rose

Productivity Commission Inquiry.

Now is your chance to have your say!

If you have information, facts, figures relating to GST free imports into Australia, and how it has affected your business, please send to the address in the attached pdf  (with a copy to PMA) .The Fair Imports Alliance is collating responses and making a submission, on our behalf, to The Commission.

PMA will be making a separate submission to the Productivity Commission on general issues relating to retail.

Do not put it off..now is your chance to have your say!

PRODUCTIVITY COMMISSION INQUIRY
Economic Structure and Performance of the Australian Retail Industry
The Fair Imports Alliance is working toward preparing a submission to the Productivity Commission's
Inquiry into the future of retail.
The Fair Imports Alliance will prepare a joint submission on behalf of its member organizations and their respective industry members about the issues associated with the low value importation threshold.
Individual associations will prepare submissions on other issues, but the Fair Imports Alliance will ensure a joint submission is prepared dealing with the importation issue.
The Productivity Commission will provide the Government its report by November of this year. An issues paper will be released in March and submissions to the Inquiry are due by 20 May. A draft report will be released in August of this year, followed by public hearings in September and a final report in November.
Information about the Productivity Commission Inquiry can be found at
http://www.pc.gov.au/projects/inquiry/retail-industry

There are five Terms of Reference that the Productivity Commission Inquiry will address;
1. The current structure, performance and efficiency of the retail sector and impediments to its
contribution to the Australian economy
2. The drivers of structural change in the retail industry, including globalisation, increasing household
and business access to the digital economy, cost structures of the domestic retail industry,
employment structure, the exchange rate and structural change driven by the resources boom
3. The broader issues which are contributing to an increase in online purchasing by Australian
consumers and the role of online purchasing in providing consumers with greater choice, access
and convenience
4. The sustainability and appropriateness of the current indirect tax arrangements in this environment,
including the impact on Commonwealth and State and Territory budgets, and the extent to which
technology could reduce the administrative costs of collecting indirect taxes and duty on imported
goods
5. Any other regulatory or policy issues which impact on structural change in the sector.
If you would like to provide feedback to the Fair Imports Alliance to help us ensure that industry views are reflected in the submission to the Productivity Commission you can do so by emailing
fairimportsalliance@retail.org.au. Please place the words 'PC INQUIRY SUBMISSION FEEDBACK' in the subject heading of the email
For further information email fairimportsalliance@retail.org.au or contact your Association.

Selling Silver

Andrew Mason from Photo Continental advised us this week that the price of silver is now sitting at $825.39 per kilo so if you are thinking of selling your silver output from your lab then now may be the time to do so!

Australian Government Online Retail Forum.

I was fortunate enough (representing PMA) to sit in on the Australian Govts Online Retail Forum last week in Sydney. Those attending were

The Hon.Nick Sherry    Minister for Small Business

The Hon Stephen Conroy Minister for Broadband

Deb Sharkey     MD eBay

Jason Pellegrino Google

Plus representatives from PayPal,Australia Post and DHL

There were some "heavy hitters "in the room!

Obviously Stephen Conroy was promoting the NBN and what better way of doing it than cranking up on line trading!

In summary :

Australia Post stated 58% of Aust retailers are not on line

% of sales on line is Aust 4%,USA 7%,UK 10% (we therefore have a long way to go?)

"Anything, anyplace, anytime"seemed to be the catch cry for online.

No "retail" rents was also quoted often as a major benefit.

Google stated :

4 out of 5 consumers are now using the internet to research products.

2 out of 3 On line shoppers look to buy locally.

Google experienced a 36% growth in searches over last year!

Consumers now see no difference in "on line" or "off line" retail .Its all the same to most of them.

76 % of on line shoppers quote convenience as the main benefit of shopping on line (only 35% quoted price)

PayPal said $26Billion was spent on line in 2010 with a projected 11% increase this year.

Phones and price comparison APS are being used more and more in store

Groupon (a new online site recently in Australia) went from $60M to 250M in one year internationally!

Greys On line is now selling $300M PA .They started their on line business in 2000! They are selling in Australia 65000 cases of wine a month. They did not sell wine before!

eBay stated

Sales in Australia are up 38% on previous year!

Many of their sales are for retail stores across Australia. Most of the products they sell are brand new.

68% of their shoppers want to buy locally.

Red Lazer, the new AP from eBay allows consumer to scan bar code for price comparisons! Is that happening in your store?

6Mil visit eBay Australian site monthly.

DHL stated their business model is rapidly changing from Business to Business to Business to Consumer

Australia Post claimed 70% of their business is now e com driven.

Australia Post also has a joint venture with China Post to deliver goods directly from China to consumers!

We were handed "want to get your business online but not sure where to start?" Go to www.digitalbusiness.gov.au

A truly fascinating insight into the growth of on line retail in Australia.

The feeling I was left with was that if you are serious about retail, you need to have an online presence, as your customer expects you to be there.
